Here's the difference between Raoul and the Phantom. Raoul was willing to die for her. The Phantom was willing to kill for her - but not actually for her, but to keep her there for himself.

“Christine say no, don’t throw your life away for my sake” That line right there is really telling of how much Raoul cares about and loves Christine. He would rather die so Christine could be free from the Phantom and live her life than have Christine go with the Phantom to save his life. If that isn’t true love and sacrifice I don’t know what is.

Raoul's face when Erik makes that last pull. I can hardly imagine the excruciating pain he is going through. Not just from being on the brink of choking to death at the Phantom's hands, but also from watching Christine being forced to make an impossible choice - sacrificing her freedom, or her lover.

It could’ve been if he wasn’t a murderer and didn’t sabotage the opera. Like Christine said “it’s in your soul where the true distortion lies”. If he was a healthy person to be in love with, he wouldn’t have tried to kill Raoul (or anyone for that matter). Jealousy is normal, his actions however, we’re obsessive and dangerous. I don’t think he would have stopped all that even if he ended up with the woman he so desperately wanted. He needed help before that kind of love

The emotions in this song is fucking amazing.

0:40-0:46 So much emotion, intensity, and desparation. The rest is definitely good, but that part especially is amazing.

0:32 Christine looks so torn between the 2 choices that the Phantom has given her and made me realize how much pressure is on her and how young she is to make it and how much older the Phantom was to pressure her into making a choice 😥.

This is awesome! Although, Christine sings "Why do you curse me?" not "Why do you curse mercy?" But aside from that you are pretty much spot on. Also, while listening to it again, I'm pretty sure that the Phantom sings "Although the prize for help, no point inviting" instead of "All hope of cries for help, no point in fighting." I could be mistaken, but I used to have this soundtrack on CD and would listen to it non-stop. 😉

americanfairy I wrote this from what I heard and if I didn’t quite understand what they were saying I looked it up and checked to make sure it was correct, so I’m almost sure they should be correct, and same I also listen to it nonstop 🙂

This is the climax of the film!

In fact, it is very difficult for me to watch this scene. I perfectly understand that Raoul does everything for Christine and sincerely loves her (we are talking about the film, in the book I hate him), he is literally ready to die for her freedom. And she's afraid, they put pressure on her, she is too young for this... But it was Erik who brought me the most pain. Here he seems terrible, but he does not know how to keep Christine - his hope, his life - with him. And in the end, despite the strongest love for her, he lets her go. Having lived alone all his life and dreaming of love - he lets go the only girl whose love he wanted. It hurts me a lot to watch this movie, I cry on every song and my heart really hurts, but at the same time this is my favorite movie. I madly love and feel compassion for Erik, I'm madly sorry that Christine cannot be completely happy with him. But it could be so if someone ever fell in love with him... I love you, Erik. And I love you, Christine.

It's not the same thing.... We're talking about a deeply scarred man who was pushed by society to become violent, who never knew love, compassion and kindness and who only wanted one thing: to be loved. In this situation, she stabbed him in the back. And she betrayed him. I mean the moment when she tears down his mask during the show in the opera and "presents" his face to everyone there, knowing very well what this means to him. Then she ran away with her rich boyfriend and lived a good life.

@@ingridmay66 You are giving the Phantom way too much credit. This is a man who has been manipulating Christine for possibly years, using her father's dying words to woe her to his side. He proceeds to terrorize Christine and assault/kill the people around her when it looked like she might be pulling away from him. Then, during Don Juan, he uses private, intimate words of love that Raoul had said to her to bring her back to his side. Erik may be sympathetic, but he is by no means a good person and Christine was 100% justified in getting away from him.

He's kind of like a child, he doesn't know what else to do so he becomes violent in order to get what he wants.... I can understand his need to control. it comes from his past in controlling the opera through the previous owner and his painful childhood. He's a genius, all the plays that played at the opera are written by him and they're a hit. Christine was an equal in that she was so gifted musically. When he found someone that he loves only to find that she's in love with someone else, it enrages him and think of the best method to own her.... But he sacrificed his happiness for her so she could live with her rich boyfriend. In this version he loved her very much, even if he manipulated her, there was a reason for that... It's just too sad how he never got the one thing he desired. This was his punishment.
