About:
Far beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom in a shadowy existence. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the love he holds for his beautiful protégée Christine Daaé is so strong that even her heart cannot resist.
The musical opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 9 October 1986 with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the leading roles, and there have been dozens of productions worldwide since then. Now in its 30th record-breaking year, The Phantom of the Opera continues to captivate audiences at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End, after more than 11,000 performances.

@@Firegirl483 I kind of blame Madame Giry a bit for the Phantom turning out the way he did. Sure, she saved him that one time and gave him a safe place to stay, but she could have done more. I feel she didn't really show any love/kindness/compassion to Phantom (aside from saving him that one time), if she had then he would know what thinks like kindness and compassion are, because he would have experienced it. In other words, she didn't nurture him the way you would think she would have, based on how she seems to feel that Phantom is special to her (when she's telling the story to Raoul and she says things like he's a magician, genius, etc.)

So he did the only thing he could do and killed the circus master and fled with Madame Giry. But I doubt that Madame Giry tried to do anything to help him and make him not unhappy. Hes lived in that Opera since then with no knowledge of the world outside and even if he did go outside he would get shuned from society and treated horribly just because his face was deformed. So im pretty sure he would become the person he is from that traumatizing childhood

Indeed! I will always be on the Erik 's side and quite frankly I would have chosen him and taken him outside of the cave to live somewhere nice to have a fresh start in life besides teaching him to be the human he never got to be had I been Christine because I have been tormented to utter despair like him however I never gave in to the darkside so I actually could've helped him mentally.

To be fair, even Gerard has said he was surprise he landed the Phantom role because his background was in rock music. He said he even went to the London Academy of Music and they said he had the right range, but maybe it was an issue of timing. It probably takes a certain amount of range to hit these notes properly, but I actually don’t think Gerard’s voice is bad. I like his voice very much, but it’s not what I would consider operatic. There’s a lot of pain and roughness to his singing voice, which kind of suits the character. He’s so tormented by his love for Christine… it comes off nicely in his voice.

I feel bad for the Phantom, but as Christine says, he'd allowed his "disfigurement" to seep into his soul. That's why I like the character for the Phantom. He's absolutely a villain, there's no defending his actions, but you can't help but feel sorry for him, because who he is is partially the fault of society around him. (Not that he doesn't bear blame for his actions, he still chose to murder, blackmail, and kidnap.)

Not to mention that you made that quite clear during your rooftop duet with Christine.
Gerard Butler, while not trained musically, still did a decent job with the songs in the film. And when it came to songs with notes he couldnt hit, he let his skills as an actor shine by focusing on performance more than vocals. And this part of the film showcases that fact perfectly. From the moment he's dragging Christine down to his lair the Phantom's world is up in flames (literally thanks to the chandelier), he's being hunted, the woman he loves revealed his disfigurement to everyone, by this point the Phantom is having a breakdown. Gerard Butler uses this scenario to strengthen the performance rather than the singing. The Phantom's voice is no longer melodic, his persona no longer suave and mysterious, his voice is more guttural and growling and the true broken, lonely man is on show.
The fact that Raoul is trying to wriggle free while the Phantom binds him and continues doing it while he is bound but stops when he hears the impossible decision Christine has to make...
I love how the Phantom taunts Raoul "ORDER YOUR FINE HORSES NOW, RAISE YOUR HAND TO THE LEVEL OF YOUR EYES!" Go Erik!

[PHANTOM] That fate which condemns me to wallow in blood Has also denied me the joys of the flesh This face-the infection which poisons our love This face, which earned a mother's fear and loathing A mask, my first unfeeling scrap of clothing Pity comes too late- Turn around and face your fate: An eternity of this before your eyes! [CHRISTINE] This haunted face holds no horror for me now It's in your soul that the true distortion lies [PHANTOM] Wait! I think, my dear, we have a guest! Sir... [CHRISTINE:] Raoul! [PHANTOM] ...this is indeed, an unparalleled delight! I had rather hoped that you would come And now my wish comes true- You have truly made my night! [CHRISTINE, spoken (Special Edition only)] Let me go [RAOUL (pleading, grasping the bars of the gate)] Free her! Do what you like, only free her! Have you no pity? [PHANTOM] Your lover makes a passionate plea! [CHRISTINE] Please Raoul, it's useless! [RAOUL] I love her! Does that mean nothing? I love her! Show some compassion... [PHANTOM] The world showed no compassion to me! [RAOUL] Christine, Christine Let me see her... [PHANTOM] Be my guest, sir... Monsieur, I bid you welcome! Did you think that I would harm her? Why would I make her pay, for the sins which are yours? Order your fine horses now! Raise up your hand to the level of your eyes! Nothing can save you now-except perhaps Christine... Start a new life with me- Buy his freedom with your love! Refuse me, and you send your lover to his death! This is the choice- This is the point of no return!

He also selfishly pressured Christine into choosing him. "I did it all for you and all for nothing!" (Might as well add "if you don't choose me" to that line) "Say you love him and my life is over!" (His life ending is the very thing Christine is trying to prevent, so by him saying that, he's actually basically saying that no matter what she chooses, his life is over, whether metaphorically or literary) "I fought so hard to free you." (So? That doesn't mean shit. This is Christine's decision, not yours, Raoul. She didn't even ask you to do that, so she owes you nothing.)

2:52 I have never been given an explanation for this and no one has EVER mentioned it but.... why does Raoul have blood on his shirt? In the "Wandering Child" scene where Raoul and Erik are having the sword-fight in the graveyard, Erik slashes at Raoul and cuts open his left arm, which makes him bleed quickly and makes him stumble for a moment before he carries on fighting. I'm pretty sure Raoul has blood on his shirt in this scene because it's the blood from the wound he received during the graveyard fight, however if that IS the case, then why is it still here in this scene? During the entire evening up to this point during the Don Juan performance and all that, Raoul hasn't been wounded other than being thrown earlier into the trapped chamber full of water which he manages to escape from without a scratch (other than nearly drowning). Raoul is also a Viscount, a wealthy french noble, so it's not like he would wear the same shirt twice in Victorian-era Paris ESPECIALLY if it has blood on it, he would either have it cleaned thoroughly or just have it thrown away and have a new one bought. So it makes me think, were the directors going to have a scene in this movie where he gets wounded again on the same arm and with an identical shirt but then cut it out from the final version? Or did they just give him the same costume and hope no one would notice a blood stain? Because other than that there's no reason with both historical accuracy and the plot of the film. Anyone know the answer or have a theory? (I'm a die-hard phangirl so I take Poto seriously XD)

Well yeah, that's the point of his character. He's never experienced true human contact or affection so like a child, when someone shows it to him, he wants it only for himself and no one else. Doesn't absolve him of the horrible things he's done, but does add to the tragedy of his character. He and Christine would never have been happy, and it isn’t until the kiss that he realises this, which is why he tells her and Raoul to leave.

Because Raoul is an idiot! All he had to do, was listen to Madame Giry's advice and "keep his hand at the level of his eye". Couldn't even do that. I laugh at him every time I watch this scene.... He goes to save her without any weapons ( didn't even take his sword ). Not much fighting spirit in dear Raoul.... 😂
I wish they made his face a little more deformed. Ex. deepen the wrinkles. I know to people back then it could be enough to mock him, but in that scene because of the light those deformations were barely visible and the only thing easy to notice is the bald part of his head.

I mean, he probably did. After all, he said that Raoul's arrival was "an unparalleled delight".
If I were Christine, I would go straight and kiss the Phantom, and here's why: If I kiss him, I would end up spending my life with him. If I refuse, he will kill Raoul and, with nobody to save me, he would marry me anyway. Either way, I will end up marrying him, but if I make the first move, I would save Raoul. Alive and outside the lair, Raoul would be able to inform everyone what happened and save me. I would be free, Raoul would be alive and safe, and the Phantom would be behind different bars to the ones in his lair. That is why kissing the Phantom has a higher net gain than refusing to marry him and why I would choose that option in Christine's shoes (but mostly because I can't bear to see Raoul in excruciating pain).
Raoul doesn’t love her he played her i have no idea why she fell for his trick
The Phantom: Why would I make her pay for the sins which are YOURS Me: He didn't do anything!! Yes he loves Christine, but that's not a sin, or anyone's fault! And why should you make him pay for the sins which are yours?

"Sexually harassed Christine".... When did it happen? Yes, he is trying to force her to marry him... But he does it out of desperation.... They are both madly in love...People do crazy things, when they're in love. 😆

@@pillypuppy666 I’d like an alternative story where Christine actually falls in love with him. And Raoul loses his childhood girlfriend. 😆

Great idea, im sure the disfigured social recluse knows what romance looks like. In fact they should make a movie based on what a monster thinks romance looks like....
OH NO! his voice is worst than I imagined, I had to lower my volume 😣. In comparison, Patrick sounds more like an angel.
