Far beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom in a shadowy existence. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the love he holds for his beautiful protégée Christine Daaé is so strong that even her heart cannot resist.
The musical opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 9 October 1986 with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the leading roles, and there have been dozens of productions worldwide since then. Now in its 30th record-breaking year, The Phantom of the Opera continues to captivate audiences at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End, after more than 11,000 performances.
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s mesmerizing score along with jaw-dropping scenery and breathtaking special effects, magically combine to bring this tragic love story to life each night.

How could they do an adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera, if Erik had fall in love by madame Giry instead of Christine? Also, he prob saw her as a mother, since she was older than him and he never had mother's love. Sorry if i'm being gross or something, that's just my view. I think it would be interesting if Erik and madame Giry were kinda son and mother. He could find another love, better than Christine, and be happy at last. What do you think about it?

@@la_esmeralda444 Also, I think the Phantom first fell in love with Christine's voice not her beauty/personality. It is hinted in a few songs I think. Madame Giry was a dancer, a ballerina but not a singer, a musical artist. Christine could preform the songs he wrote so it created a bond between her and Erik. I agree that Erik might think of Madame Giry as a motherly figure and once you grow up motherly affection isn't enough to complete you. Erik desired romantic affection which he could only get from Christine but not from Madame Giry. Atleast thats how I see it.

If I were to write a proper sequel to the Phantom's story; instead of the Phantom grieving over losing Christine to Raoul, I would have had Madame Gire go to his lair, and have her escape with Eric from the Paris Opera House, and have the both of them grow closer to each other, living out their lives together, while also being on the run from the Paris authorities, and maybe have them ending up in Moscow or somewhere in Italy, etc.

This is sad. But what's even sadder is that no-one seems to notice how hypocritical and racist this scene is. They talk about 'beauty underneath' and then they give us a scene where they use every stereotype about gypsies in the book - they're circus people, they're fortune tellers, they're travellers, they're scary, they're evil, they're greedy, they're cruel, they have dark skin, they look like they were eyeliner, their hair is ratty and dirty, they deserve to die. And considering that they were considered to be 'scum of the earth' do you really think that the police would cause that much of a fuss over one getting killed. I mean, seriously, why did they think it was ok to use this many stereotypes? Does no-one see how hypocritical this is? I mean it's bad enough that everyone looks over the mental and emotional abuse and manipulation he puts Christine through because it's 'romantic' to take advantage of a girls misery over her fathers death and let her think he was her fathers spirit watching over her and demanding her obedience in everything right down to who she can and can't see, but then they add racism to the mix? Yes, I'm sorry for him that he went through that, but that wasn't even in the original book, why was this so necessary? Besides, the revelation scene in 'The Elephant Man' was much better.

So the film was set in 1870 (despite the fact there were no signs of the siege of Paris occurring in the movie, as the city was under attack by the Prussians in that year) and the Phantom was about thirty (a guess I suppose but about that) - the child phantom in the flashback was about ten? So that makes it 1850. The Paris Opera House was not even designed until 1860, and it wasn't open for business until 1875, five years after the events of this film. Why they changed the dates amazes me - it added nothing to the film to set it in 1870 rather than 1880 when the book was set. Research costs nothing!
