    This is looking very nice. Shall keep my eye on this, looks like a very nice program that contains some immersive tabletop features that are lacking in other programs. Am currently a Fantasy Grounds GM and have used FG for years, and am also using FG:Unity at the moment, of which I hope it will contain at least some of these map functions, so it is nice to see some worthy competition (and choices) that is showing how things should be done. Keep up the good work!

    Your videos are so incredible, and when my group makes the switch they will certainly be an incredible asset! One thing I've noticed by watching videos and playing around with the Web Demo is that certain measurement templates (for example, the 20ft radius for Fireball) looks a little.. different than I'm used to. Not sure exactly how to describe it, but the template I saw appear for your fireball is 9 tiles wide and tall. The one we use in our group is an 8 tiles wide/tall circle, so it seems like Foundry is giving them a larger AoE? Is there a way to modify how the templates appear when you use the measurement tool? I hope this makes sense, and thanks again for your incredible content!

  • @EncounterLibrary

    @EncounterLibrary

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you so much for the kind words! So the template thing is a little complicated. Geometry was my worst math subject so I'm not really qualified to give a good answer here but my understanding is that RAW says that spell templates should have their point of origin inside the center of a square and not on the edge. Since it's in the center you wind up 'losing' a square of what would be part of the spell's area of effect and that's what brings in the 9th square. When I had it explained to me I got it, but only just barely haha. I hope that's enough to give you a bit of an idea at least. In terms of replacing the template you can change template size either after its been placed by swapping to the Template tool (the right angle ruler in the left hand sidebar) and double clicking on the template. You can also edit spells to have a different template shape by clicking 'edit' on the spell in the character sheet and going to its details. Hopefully that's enough to get you where you want to be!

    This video is great, thank you for making it. I'm wondering if there might be a "crash course" or "fly-by" version that you make that is for those players that won't watch a full 20 minutes? Or even for the people who are starting a session, and didn't realize it was on a new platform so other people are waiting? IDK, maybe there isn't really a demand, but it was something that occurred to me. I'm finding your videos to all be very helpful while I get up to speed with Foundry.

  • @EncounterLibrary

    @EncounterLibrary

    There's a few minutes of content that can be skipped in this video (the webcam/chat section) and I tried to put both of them in the back end of the video so people could stop watching and not miss anything important. Without those sections the video is 17 minutes long and I'm not sure how much shorter I could make it while still covering the software with enough depth to be useful. I could make a simple 'This is how you move and open your character sheet' video but I don't know if that covers enough to be really useful. Out of curiosity what would you say is the bare minimum amount that you would want your players to know? I may not make a YT video about it but I could possibly record something and release it on Twitter or something.

  • @Phant0mTim

    @Phant0mTim

    @@EncounterLibrary I think you are right about the depth of what is covered, although I think you could trim down on some of the ruler tool depth a little bit. • @EncounterLibrary

    I actually put together that roll table myself but VTTA's DnDBeyond Import module will let you import the 'Class' page from the Player's Handbook and will automatically create a roll table of the whole Wild Magic table. It does put it in under the title 'Effect' though which I've submitted as a parsing error in the Discord and may get fixed before you try and use it. If it doesn't it should still be in there and you can delete the other tables that it brings in!

    Since there's so many different ways that people can host their Foundry server I didn't want to get into that for a player video. If you're having trouble with your players accessing your world through the 'Internet' invitation link though be sure to reach out in the #installation-support channel on the Foundry Discord and you'll get some help. It's most likely a port forwarding issue. You might be able to solve it using this Foundry support guide that they put together as well: prezi.com/view/FeiO42h6cxdmoIsZvUlt/ Also, if you want an easier solution be sure to check out my video on the Forge which is a great hosting platform that removes all the headaches from getting your players connected.

    Hey! Question from a long-time GM VERY new to and inexperienced with Foundry. I've been using Foundry for Trouble in Otari and Abomination Vaults. One thing I noticed that I'd like to "turn off" is how Foundry displays health changes on the monsters. (I.e. if a monster takes damage, the players see the red damage amount appear on-screen "-8" or whatever... Similarly when the monster is healed, they see a green positive health gain.) What I'm finding is that Pathfinder 2e is a VERY deadly / "swingy" game (compared to D&D 5e, for example)... with that in mind, I find myself occasionally needing to tweak monsters during fights (especially "boss" and "mini-boss" monsters.) My players are seeing my tweaks if I modify the monster's hp (they see it as damage) and ask "where did that damage come from," etc. Is there a way to "turn off" that reporting of health changes, etc., so player's can't see? (Essentially "putting the GM screen back up," in table-top terms?) ... I feel like Foundry is showing the player's too much!) -- thanks!

    @@EncounterLibrary It isn't what *I* need - I have it figured out. Your stuff is plenty good enough for GM's, who have their install to play with. It is what my *players* need - except when my server is up for training or game sessions with them, they don't have a place to practice (the demo server, with view limitations enabled, makes it hard for them to see and understand what is going on, plus there is no combat.) And having GM stuff show up on the screen just confuses them. I have been conducting training sessions with them, which take about two hours to run through (including a 45 minute combat session).

    I noticed that there were several actions for applying damage (double, half, etc) but didnt see the one that will probably be the most important and that is adding more combat die when you crit, which of course is not a raw doubling ...

  • @EncounterLibrary

    @EncounterLibrary

    3 жыл бұрын

    I believe the half and double damage are more useful for things like vulnerability and resistance. If you crit on the attack roll when you press the 'Damage' button it will give you an option for 'normal' or 'critical' and will do the correct dice rolls :D. You can also hold the 'alt' key when clicking on 'Damage' and it will roll as a critical or while holding 'shift' to roll normally without the popup.

    How would you compare the audio/video of Foundry to Roll20 and Discord? On par, worse or better?

  • @EncounterLibrary

    @EncounterLibrary

    3 жыл бұрын

    The default audio/video in Foundry and Roll20 will probably be pretty similar as they're both peer-to-peer based systems so the performance will depend heavily on the connection quality that all of the players have. One benefit to Foundry though is that you can integrate a Jitsi server into the audio/video system which will route everyone's audio/video through a server and will greatly reduce the strain on everyone's connection and in my experience greatly improves the quality. I have a video on hosting it yourself if you're interested. Compared to Discord (which isn't peer-to-peer) both Foundry and Roll20 are probably worse (so long as Discord doesn't go down). I like using the built-in system though because it keeps everything in one window and its easier for my players to look at each and eases role play (at least in my opinion). The set up/complexity definitely makes Discord a really appealing option though and I play in a game that uses it and it's not a problem at all!

The basics for how to do that are here: foundryvtt.com/article/port-forwarding/ but it would probably be worth while to jump into the Foundry Discord in the #troubleshooting channel where someone can give you some more specific help. If you don't want to go through the process of port forwarding you can also host through a service like The Forge or Foundry Server and it will handle everything for you. The owner of the license (gm) uses port sharing and a sharable link from the right-hand bar. The sharing link should be just above the log out button. You can share that link with your players and set an access key (password) for players to login to your game. Once your players are in, the fun can begin!

    You're not a bother at all! The combat initiative formula is stored in a CONFIG variable (CONFIG.Combat.initiative to be specific). I had the same problem, don't worry. You can use the video options without having to host anything online yourself. You will probably want to port forward so players can connect to your PC when you want to play (this will be different depending on your internet provider's settings) but will require you to go into the settings of your router. Additionally you need to make a certificate that tells your PC its ok to not be as save as it could possibly be and your friends are not virusses. It's kind of a I know the risk I'm taking but I'm doing it anyway step so If anything does go wrong it's your own fault. What I found unclear about the instructions on the Foundry website is that it doesnt clearly state what to do with the Key once you have it. It needs to go into the Foundry/config directery. One should be the key and the other should be the certificate. Hopefully this helps :)

Opening a dozen dialogue boxes for each attack, and having to manually input damage on everything, is just absurd.

    @@NightBlade58 There's lots of benefits to running Foundry locally (like that it's free) but some people's ISPs restrict port forwarding or they don't want to deal with the set up. Some folks also have poor internet connections and so serving the map files, the token images, and music can put a significant strain on their connection. If they host in the cloud the server will handle all of the complicated stuff and will serve the files which would be much faster than them trying to upload it to all of their players. If things seem to be working just fine with loading and music etc. (after any potential port forwarding issues are dealt with) you can stick with that. If you run into issues or can't get the networking side figured out it's easy to get started with any of the hosting options. I try to be familiar with all the common set ups so I've run it locally, on the Forge, and on a VPS that I set up and honestly the only thing that changes is how everybody connects to the game and improvements for people who have low bandwidth/poor connections. This is a guide for how to use Foundry for players not a DM hosting guide. For players there's nothing they need to do other than connect to the game with a link the DM sends them. If you're the DM and you want to host Foundry on your personal computer (and not using a cloud service or a hosting provider) then you need to run Foundry, go to the settings tab in the right hand sidebar, click on 'Invitation Links' and copy the 'Internet' link and send it to your players. I would recommend having them connect before your actual session though to see if there are any issues. You may need to port forward for them to connect properly. There is some information about that in the Foundry troubleshooting Prezi here: prezi.com/view/FeiO42h6cxdmoIsZvUlt/ Since it varies by router and some ISPs have more specific settings that they need I would recommend reaching out in the Foundry Discord in the #installation-support channel if you have issues with setting up port forwarding.
