The Places In Between with Rory Stewart - Conversations with History

Host Harry Kreisler welcomes Rory Stewart, Member of the British Parliament, for a discussion of his remarkable odyssey. Reflecting on his background and drawing on his work as a diplomat, soldier, explorer, provincial governor, policy advisor, university research fellow, director of an NGO, and parliamentarian, he describes what he has learned from these multiple experiences. Analyzing the failure of intervention by the West in Iraq and Afghanistan, he focuses on the contradictions between the abstract theories that guide Western policy and the social structures, the geography and history that define the realities of the people and places of Afghanistan and Iraq His conversation concludes with advice for students on preparing the future in an uncertain world. *I would never describe myself as a supporter of the Conservative Party, but sadly, I suspect Rory Stewart is the best Prime Minister we never had in Great Britain and the UK. He's genuinely such a wise, intelligent and considered young man for his years and would have made a great Statesman. He's one of maybe a dozen MP's currently in the Houses of Parliament, who I genuinely believe went into politics for all the right reasons. It might sound a little **_'over the top',_** but Parliament is a much better and fairer place with people like Rory Stewart in it. As I say, I'm not even a supporter of the Conservative Party and its values, but credit where credit's due.*

He said he went into politics to make a difference and I believe he has even if he will not win the Party leadership this time. He is hardly going to say he isn`t proud of being Conservative is he? The Green party in the UK are a tiny minority and will remain little more than a pressure group. Tory has meant diiferent things to different people. It does not have to mean narrow minded Thatcherism and at other times it has not.Why else was Thatcher regarded as being so different? No reason a Conservative politician cannot occupy the centre ground. Where would you go if you were not a Socialist/Marxist. Where would you go if you accepted the Brexit referendum result so the Liberal Party was consequently not an option? Make a new party ,like those Change UK losers?

@@billycaspersghost7528Thatcher was regarded as so different by who? Almost everyone I know considered her to be a disaster for this country. She started the neo liberal "privatise all public services" type politics which have been disastrous to the NHS, and now they're eating their way into every national parks and what little is left after 4 decades of parasitic policies. Plus, I never could understand how these services were or are, theirs to sell. They were elected to govern, not sell. No one looks to the Tory party for a different approach. I'm not a Marxist but this situation proves him correct in his predictions of where capitalism would lead. None of this will stop the disaster for all humanity, and all other species that really should be faced and dealt with. Unfortunately, the public are ill informed, misinformed on the subject of climate change, and so won't ever agree to change their lifestyles, and the billionaires that profit from oil, air travel, car manufacturing, property development, etc are going to keep them as ignorant as they already are. So in the end it makes no difference what you or I think! I do like Rory Stewart, but the children of the world are more informed and aware of the serious consequences we face that those that govern. I don't care what political party governs so long as it's not corrupt, but that's the snag with all of them, which is why I do like Rory Stewart, because I do think he's honest, as is Jeremy Corbyn, that's the real difficulty is that people prefer lies and liars. Seductive lies!

"Thatcher was regarded as so different by who?". Well me and the many other people who lived through those times. By the people who coined the term "Thatcherism" for her narrow minded ,corner shop, monetarist ,Fiscal Darwinist economic policies. By those people of the more centre ground Conservative party who saw the damage being done to the "One Nation" they believed in. As you say it was Thatcher that started the sell offs and in that sense she was different, something new.It was this narrow nonsense that has done more to break up the "One Nation" than anything to do with Brexit. In the `60s Scotland was mainly Tory now it`s mainly SNP. I do not believe Corbyn is honest and his latest wriggling on the Anti Semitism in his party and recent evasions on the Skripal affair and the socialist debacle in Venezuela show this.

Me and my wife saw him interviewed by Jon Snow at a morning event at the Hay Festival in 2009 or 2010 ( not sure) and he was very interesting, articulate and engaging. Jon Snow is a great interlocutor and always brings out the best in people. Rory Stewart had the most incredible coat that he said came from Paris and looked very expensive- neither of us has ever seen anything like it. He also attended a talk by Robert Skidelsky about the great Maynard Keynes where other attendees included Michael Gove, not long before he embarked on a disastrous ministerial career ( Gove). I do not share Rory Stewart's party allegiance and there are those who say he is in the wrong party. It is impossible to neatly categorise individual motives and choices but I can only surmise that instinct and background make him more comfortable in the Conservative Party, as well as some ideological beliefs more typically associated with them, e.g small state, lower taxes, et al. His one time approval of Boris Johnson is incomprehensible, even before Covid. Gove and Johnson prove that journalists do not make effective politicians.

Jasmine Luxemburg we should judge people not by their words, or even by their demeanour (which can all be artifice), but by their actions. And has ANY Tory voted against or even criticised the disastrous and universally condemned austerity measures implemented to bail out the banks? If you want to tend the plants in a garden, you don’t get a job with a company that covers all green land with concrete. So, what this SIS (MI6) agent says (in his apparently thoughtful and caring way), and what he does are two very different things. They are not in any way complete. And don’t forget that in Iraq he oversaw the process that lead to the situation those poor people are living under now. He was posted there as part of the overall plans to destabilise not just Iraq, but the entire region. Did he become a whistle blower? No. No, instead he makes a living taking in that manner, hoping people will just judge him by his words.

My guess is that the Harvard students saw him in the way he described was because they are/were destined to be part of the bureaucracy he was warning against. You're not going to make progress ( personal/professional) if you are questioning the futile nature of the work. There is some comfort in knowing that no matter what you do in this situation, as an outsider you are destined to fail. But you're efforts will be viewed as a success by the political/military/bureaucratic systems. This is why Rory is correct, we should be extremely careful where and to what extent we intervene in the places in between.

Been following a lot of Rory"s videos and I've come to the conclusion that he fits in with the catagory of adventurer and has used his deep sense of humanitarian curiosity to get an effective understanding about life and the human condition. He's a combination of so many things. He's so unlike most people. He displays qualities of humility that normally indwell "holy men". He doesn't do anything superficial. I'm convinced he will leave a mark in this world which won't be soon forgotten!

He is a very impressive personality, and brings a big-picture, world-view to the table more than most of his peers. The Political climate today is just not sympathetic to someone like him and he is unlikely to become PM for now .... However, I hope he sticks around because the world is changing, and there could come a time when we need his kind of leadership. He has a brilliant mind, understands different cultures and speaks different languages. In a more civilised world these qualities (plus his courage as a soldier) would place him in the top flight. Jacob Rees Mogg, Tobias Ellwood and Rory Stewart represent a promise of new, enlightened, accountable governance. I hope men of this calibre become the future time's rule - rather than the exception.

A very attractive personality, a good logical thinker and excellent debater (Eton seems to ensure that). But from this video, he ran charities where there were free handouts of overseas aid from various sources and he had to spend it all in the coming financial year. Not the usual problems that an SME has to solve ! Now he wants to be Prime Minister.

He says that in all those communities he came away with the sense that they were good people 14:47. I read the book. He was shot at, threatened, stoned, punched, given little food and made to sleep in places with no heat in winter. Many of the Afghan men that he accepted food and shelter from were men who had shot many other men (sometimes unarmed prisoners) and would do so again without hesitation. Lovely people. "I was lucky, lucky to make it out alive" 21:00.

I just plainly don't understand (even after hearing many of these people talk) why the western countries ARE in those places in a forceful manner in the first place; if they went to these places to learn and see like this man did, all would be so different. Westerners always start with the premise that "what we want for these people is... what we want to achieve here is...." so damn hypocritical and imperialistic.

@@OrcusMaximus Well, what I mean is that English and European persons in general love to "backpack" across other nations and "have experiences" but for most of the rest of the world that is just "life"... and in most instances IF I were to get up now and get by backpack and walk, I would find limitation and people stopping me from entering certain nations, I would not be allowed to enter or "walk" into most European nations just because I decided to start seeing the world, or most of the American continent also... so this thing he describes is sort of a privilege for some and there a plenty of limits for most others. I don't feel like a victim either, but these are facts, no??

i believed that revolution or change in right direction only came from the local leaders of that particular region/country and that person must be connected from the native population. for example mahatma gandhi who gets exposure to western education, know local culture, language and sacrificed himself for the betterment of people. only those kind of people will be able to solve the problem permanently which is discussed in the video. this is my opinion.
