He speaks very well and is probably a very capable politician. I had it heard of him before the leadership election. Ut I don't know where he can go from here. He is wasted and dits a shame.

Voted the party line so no free school meals-your kids can go hungry St Rory couldnt care less-plus landlord controls,too many mps/party donors to upset there etc etc.Why is there always a need to find a cuddly Con.?Probably because a lot of the media-Oxbridge/private schools-Eton in his case-see themselves in him.Faker basically and no we do not want him back in politics,no more Eton poshboys fxxing things up for the rest of us!

Sad but true. 😢 Good to see his success on the podcast instead and, who knows, maybe one day of the UK gets it’s senses back he could end up as PM.

I’ve been a labour supporter my entire political life, 50 years and counting, Born and bred red one might say. But I learned in my youth whilst my rebellious nature ,I thought would be good for the country, far left politics will never,quite rightly will never win an election,I could never imagine voting conservative ,but this man’s honesty has rocked my world, and if he were leader I would have voted for him over Corbin everyday of the week,I prayed at the last election for a hung parliament, and Johnson would slink away back to the sewer whence he came

I wish more people would appreciate the value of having sincere ,empathetic , honest ,sensible ,mature ,respectful people with integrity, represent them in the parliament of this land . Surely ,that is the least we should expect . It's what many far more " lowly" jobs would be looking for as a baseline. Rory , would get my vote but instead we have voted in a number of self serving con artists to whom empathy is a mysterious concept and honesty and respect are words which should have "dis" in front of them . We need to insist that the behaviour of each constituency MP meets these minimum standards if they wish to be elected and that they will be de-selected if they let these standards fall .

The best PM we never had. If he had been, I suspect we wouldn't be deep in the mire as we are today.

@@nickbarton3191 I was at Rory's side shortly before this happened, he's telling the truth. I've a decent share of a Nobel Peace Prize, and may be Cummings' original "weirdo and misfit" - but there's no way I'll deal with politics now. Both sides have turned it into radical autocracy, nobody's interested in the centre ground. What's about to head our way is a massive wave of falsehoods, as the election campaign starts, buying votes. I've set up two small parties in my time, Paul Judge's Jury Team, and the local administration in the Brussels borough of Watermael.

At 24 minutes Rory nailed it. He is an awful loss to British politics. He is testimony to how the party machine thinks. It wants a leader that it can control. Not a leader the the people need.

One of the few politicians that I hold in respect. I have and never will vote Conservative.

Mister Stewart needs to be employed as an independent advisor on political programmes. Very few elected officials could face him down politically.

I could listen to this man talk all day and be perfectly content and happy u til the end of my time . This individual man gives one hope.

I’ve been labour all my life I think Rory Is such a great guy and possibly more labour than he knows certainly more so than Starmer I’d vote for Rory love the rest is politics podcast too

Back then without admitting it, Rory has said we now live in a dictatorship. There is no way this can be considered a democracy.

This man is of impeccable background to qualify him as a professional politician in the presently-accepted mode - ancient family connections, Eton, Oxford [ Balliol no less ! ] and a degree in PPE. His sincerity is clear. In my view the essential qualities required to be a successful politician - the ability to lie convincingly, to cheat when you have to, and to bully those who oppose you, are all lacking. I can see why he is having some difficulty in deciding what to do next.

Then why did he, continually, vote the way he did? Come on, wake up and see through the charade... He's been placed there, to seem nice and reasonable, when there is nothing reasonable about his voting record, at all.

Rory's observations are even more relevant when one looks at the current state of the Conservatives and their liar-in-chief.

This talk has aged like a fine wine. Everything Rory Stewart said turned out to be bang on! His sacking for not agreeing with Boris pinpoints the moment when Parliament is prepared for an autocracy. Its very name has its roots in being free to debate matters for the good of the country, not to please your donors or your political ambition

I like this guy. He was portrayed as the nut job by the media, but he speaks more sense than most politicians. It's a pity that he was drummed out.

He actually is one of the very few very thoughtful, honorable now ex-conservative.

His idea about the citizens counsel to decide Brexit sounds intriguing and building rental/social housing is so obviously needed, but I didn't yet check his voting record which is always where you find the truth and get that let down 'oh well, just another tory, smart enough to put us all on but just as duplicitous as usual"..I hope, but do not expect, to be pleasantly surprised, we will see. EDIT - so I looked at his voting record and it's shocking, he is another one that wants to cut everything for the sick and needy and fund tax cuts for businesses with the money saved. Disgusting con artist.

I find myself fascinated by this guy. A Tory, yet so honest, so empathic, so principled ! I guess that’s what Boris threw him out !

What did Rory Stewart say about a government responsible for killing many times more of its own citizens via economic policy than General Pinochet managed in Chile? nothing, he was a part of it. This man should be derided and ignored by any decent minded person of this nation who is capable of an ounce of critical thought and is sick to the back teeth of repeating the same mistakes while expecting a different result.

I'd say Rory lies on the right but more towards the centre. Rory is a smart analytical indivual educated in economics, and actually knows the catastrophe of no deal. Boris has gone "off the rails" by lying and breaking the law trying to get his agenda through.

What a wonderfully fair, articulate, caring, self-aware and perceptive man. If only he had won the Tory leadership campaign...

@martin corderoy We'll have to politely agree to disagree on that one. I personally feel that very few people would vote for the Brexit Party now; the initial buzz has died down and from multiple recent polls it appears that the majority of people appear to be more centrist having become aware of how much the Leave campaign misled people. Regardless, certainly most people do not appear to want to leave the EU without a deal (nothing to do with leaving or remaining, simpy that the majority do not like the idea of leaving without a deal). Personally, I don't see Rory Stewart or any of the rebel MPs as "left wing"... I see the present leadership being as far right as Corbyn is far left and should there be an election in your country in the reasonably near future I predict the Liberal Democrats will do very well but there will almost certainly be a hung parliament ultimately. Back to Rory Stewart... it truly wouldn't shock me if in times to come he returns to the Tory party and does in fact ultimately lead it one day. I think he's a very astute man and is playing for time. Jmo.

If he is willing to lie in that type of scenario goodness knows what else someone like him would do. Don't allow the accent and tone cloud your judgement. Clearly you don't like people who lie about and to people and so you will also understand the distate a vast number of people have for Boris, who has lied from the start of the Leave Campaign and continues to do so. I have to respectfully disagree with you about Boris having "a pair of balls"... a man who runs away in Luxembourg from 50 OAPs holding pro-Remain signs doesn't strike me as someone with "balls"! I feel the next election will, in a great sense be a "leave"/"remain" situation again and this is why I think the Lib Dems will do well. You may find this an odd comment coming from me,but I actually like Anne Marie Waters very much and many of her ideas are very sensible. I don't agree with everything she says, but she isn't part of the "Westminster Bubble" and to me that is refreshing.

@@philmcdonald4778 I think the attraction is that in the opinion of many people he is one of the most charismatic politicians that the UK country has produced in a long time and by some means or other, I reckon he will be Prime Minister one day, and he will serve several terms. I know you will disagree with me here and that's fine... I especially appreciate you simply voicing your opinion without personally attacking me for my own opinions as some have done, so thank you for that, Phil. :)

As somebody from outside of the UK. This one of the few UK politicans I can respect. The reason is that he is grounded and thinks before speaking. Also he takes into account all views and makes compromisses. This is how democracy works and the UK should have more of his kind.

​@Brexit Monger Yes it is about opposing each other and then find a compromise. We have this situation in germany often with our multi party system. It is simply not possible to ignore half of the voters (the direction doesn't matter). And he would stand for this approche. Without a compromise the country will be divded for a very long time, I would guess more then 10 years and less thn 50. What currently happens is dangerous. The UK has a PM that speaks on the speach to his party about bringing the country together. The day after, over statet, he shits 48% of the voters in the frontyard by suspending parlament. Is is legal, yes and it seems to be common. Is is nessesary and/or senisble , hell no. There was no need to deepen the divide.

​@martin corderoy I aggree to your explaination mostly. This is how it works in germany. The AfD is a bit of a special subject since they are so hard right wing that they are quiet near to be not allowed in germany (since they not distance themself from the extreme right and even go fishing for votes over there). (for good reasons the far right is not allowed) But how they are handled by the other partys is not good as well. But I think that is a complett own and lengthy discussion. To the orginal point is a bit different. As far as I could see from the outside, it is not so much about partys in the UK since the major partys also split internaly about the brexit question. I think for all politics it is really importent to act sencitiv in this question. They should avoid deepening the division in the country. And it would be fine to wait for the queens speach until November. There is no need to do this and risk deeper devided country. It is simply not a good idea.

What makes a party right wing, given only a few decades ago the position the AfD currently holds was dead center and well established? Does the definition suddenly change because: 1) special interest owned media says so over and over while robbing you blind? 2) those wanting a communist style EUSSR make sure you get fined or incarcerated if you do not support their notions? 3) they are right of Stalin/Mao/Hitler (yes he was far left by any definition, hence similar outcomes to others on this list). The point is that calling AfD right wing is displaying a horrific lack of knowledge, both historical as well as what is going on these days. Burn all your existing news sources, learn and become human again, for as currently you are just a wooden puppet with a vote...which makes you dangerous in the wrong hands.

When i was a young man you had local candidates who stood for local Elections and once elected they moved up to be elected as an MP . They would then if elected sit in parliament and vote in accordance with their constituencies . The debating had been carried out at grass root level their job was to help push it through Parliament . This is called democracy . That MP has had his vote the same as you or I .They do not get another bite of the Cherry .Boris is attempting to carry out the Democratic wish of the country. The abuse comes from the MPs who ignore their constituency and the democratic vote . Parliament has tied the hands of the elected government that is ABUSE OF POWER .

Is it really a democratic country, the Union, the United Kingdom? Both Scotland and Northern Ireland have prospered by belonging to the EU and they overwhelmingly voted to Remain, as well as the wealthy and well-educated English cities. As Scotland and NIreland find their prosperity has benefitted by belonging to the EU, perhaps it is time now to dismantle the Union, the United Kingdom. (I wonder if there are any available Stuart heirs willing to take up the Scottish crown?) In the end, the numbers between Leave and Remain were close, the reasons dishonest, and, as has been proven, the Leave campaign was heavily influenced by mischief aimed at breaking up the EU. Is that honestly your best definition of Democracy?

You couldn't imagine Rory telephoning donors for wallpaper and a refurbishment while hundreds were dying from pandemic. If Boris hadn't promised brexit, not many would have voted fof him, but he obviously promised lots of jobs to lots of people, and had the largest amount of ministers and advisors.

Around 24:05 :: Political conversation is definitely something "not serious" in Britain. The English style blending politics and comedy is unbeatable. I love to watch "BBC Parlament" when I seek some fun.

Some UK citizens, (including 'Alfred Munkenbeck', who has also posted a reply herein to 'anicetune') clearly believe that Parliamentary democracy is the be-all and end-all of UK democracy. IT IS NOT! DIRECT DEMOCRACY, which is the purest form of the Will of the People (as, for example, was expressed in the 2016 referendum), SUPERSEDES Parliamentary democracy. It is extremely rarely applied, usually in matters of the highest importance. It should have been applied in 1973, before Ted Heath criminally and ILLEGALLY bulldozed the UK into the EU (EEC/Common Market back then). Boris is, quite correctly, doing his utmost, in the face of disgracefully undemocratic resistance, to obey the DIRECT DEMOCRATIC Will of the People.

If she believes in Pariament then she should have faced the people in a generalelection weeks ago time she stopped crying and got on with making the whole UK great again. Roll on brexit and leaving under fair WTO terms which allow trade with the EU to flow and has been proven to work as they use it for world trade out side the EU area. Futher proof that WTO works is our world trade under these terms has been bigger than our EU trade since 2009.

Ermmm have you ever done much reading on the history of direct democracy? You seemed to have ignored the centuries of debate on this topic, which is mainly agreeing that direct democracy requires too much participation from the average citizen, and will end up as either uniformed people making decisions, or being highjacked by populist leaders, or most likely, both. Representative democracy was the solution to this problem, as although the people get the ultimate say every election (thus ensuring that those seeking re-election must reflect the public will) the people do not get the say on each decision. Direct democracy maybe 'pure' but it's by no means agreed to be the best way of making decisions.

This is one of the moments in which I wish for a more fare political system than the partisan, i.e. "proportional representation". Conservatism is an appealing idea for safeguarding stability should the wealth being conserved is used for promoting the country's growth. I have never vote for a conservatory party though both when I was in Greece, where I was born, and while living in UK as a British Citizen via Naturalisation since 1983. I've seen in both countries the abuse of the idea to conserve in a way that what wealth is getting stored in the government's coffers in order to benefit the public, in fact gets abused and channeled to the ones in power and those who are already wealthy. This is my reason for disliking the idealistic partisan politics Rory Stuart is a very charismatic open minded deeply knowledgeable and truly democratic politician. I would without hesitation put my vote for Rory should we had a proportional representation political system. In my opinion every country needs people like Rory Stuart democratically appointed to run their civil service in a way that safeguards and benefits its citizens.

I would love to see Rory Stewart back in Parliament - he is one of the able-est men who is NOT PM !!!! I do hope he does not just fade but can find a way back to help Britain become "GREAT" again ??!!

Boris is a liar - cannot be trusted to DO anything well or successfully and should be locked up behind bars - having lied, is unfit to govern, much too keen on pleasing "boris" and has nothing to offer the British People. He should fade into the background or LEAVE BRITAIN.

Think for a second the difference it would make if someone like him was running the Labour Party at this moment. The whole landscape would be different.

@@benwilson6145 For people of his status/background it may be, but the vast majority of people who don't have his power and connections the government have no input into government or Parliament actions/discussions. How many of us have MPS who never respond to communications or misrepresent they appeals for assistance - it's a sham democracy and we just get a choice of which muppet to put on stage.

Reading many of the comments below saddens me. They reflect the very sort of rhetoric that are ripping this country apart and is at the core of what he is speaking against. You don't have to agree with him, and I certainly have some fundamental issues with some of his political views, but if you can't show some common decency then it is best for everyone you say nothing.

The good men who are required to prevent evil from triumph are regrettably largely silent and the country continues its sleepwalk to insignificance. I’ve literally just been typing a comment very similar. I in-fact had used words like common decency. Mr Stewart speaks in moderacy which has seemingly died in our politics.

Needs to Run a centrist party. Legitimately is of “attempted” balanced logic. I’m Vote leave and happy for no deal but certainly can’t vote Tory or Brexit they’d just get my dirty work done. I’d actually get on board with a party Run by Rory Stewart. Class act

No he’s honouring a democratic vote by the British people.

I like Rory Stewart and agree with everything he says apart from brexit. Cameron made it very clear that brexit meant we are out of Europe completely, no half in half out, yet Rory says about hard and soft brexit, out meant totally out.

Poor lad - almost seems like he didn't realise he was in the nasty party until now.

No, he is a traitor to the people...he comes off very easy as all elitist high-flyers do, but how he sounds is irrelevant. He is dishonest and his actions wend against the explicit outspoken will of the people on the one single issue that matters most. Him framing the whole thing as he can vote however he likes and against party lines is irrelevant on this issue! And statistically its telling that so many parlement voting did not line up with the will of their respective constituents. This is actually a coup by the remainders with foreign aid from the EU to keep the elitist raping party going. Don't forget that GB did not became part of the EU democratically, it was forced upon the people and they do not seem to like it very much. In short he is a thug, pretending to be a saint. yes.. politics by its very nature corrupts - but when someone gets so obviously fecked over by it - it gives them a chance to go through the dark night of the soul and hopefully come to some more profound insight into both themselves and what might be a more positive role in the whole thing.. i thus keep hoping that after a couple of spells in prison Tommy Robinson might finally realize that it is the state that is the ultimately the enemy and not "islam".. i sometimes suspect that he might actually be on the verge of converting and regularly going to the mosque to embrace a more cosmic view on life..

I totally agree with him on the Lib Dem Brexit manifesto/pledge. It isn't a democratic policy. At this point a second referendum is the only truly democratic course of action. If Brexit hadn't been strung out and proven to be an absolute disaster, that would absolutely not be the case and we would already have left. But that is not the case now. We face a different reality and there ought to be another vote.

Well the politicians let us believe we had one while it suited them. Then they told us we had a "parliamentary democracy" - as in they have democracy at our expense and Amber Rudd explained that meant superior beings like her should be able to "interpret" democracy for us - as in "out" means "in".

@Phil Weatherley People were invited to vote in a referendum. They were told their vote would be recognised and acted upon. They were reassured the result would not just be treated as advisory. Then, when the outcome was not as the establishment wanted, or expected, all that changed. They were duped, in other words. Of course they will be angry, especially after 40 years of being stuck with a political system with no real economic choice and endless wars etc.. What on earth would you expect otherwise?

He's very pleasant, intelligent well read etc. But his voting record is horrid

Watched and appreciated Rory for years but not convinced by his answer to the "why not join the Liberals question". The policy horrors of the Tory party outweigh anything the Liberals are proposing. He cannot influence the current Tories but might be able to influence the Liberals from within especially were they to acquire such a "big beast".

I'm Watching YOU We will not be leaving the EU anytime soon my friend. And you seem to misunderstand democracy, democracy is the will of the people now, not the will of the people in 2016, or in 1969, now.

I personally don't agree with his take on Brexit at all, but I have no doubt he really believes in what he is saying and comes across as a likeable, reasonable and decent man.

Why should Boris resign because of the court decision? The decision was wrong.

And now we know about Boris. This was the start of the train crash, and it was far beyond the MPs.

He really is very good. The Tories missed a trick - posterity will treat Rory Stewart far better than Boris Johnson.

If Rory was honest why did he not speak to local conservatives in Strabane before he made his propaganda film on the border. My son is a young conservative and he would leave them if Rory ever is made PM of our great countries that make up the UK. In his own words Rory has a face for radio.

I have to watch Rory every few days just to feel that there are people who are sensible out there and maintain hope!

Isn't it immature to demand resignations based on whether a political prediction turns out or not? Normally in life it is not demanded that you abandon a career if you have a wrong prediction. My prediction is wrong, now I change my course etc. In general you shouldn't base objectives on one possible outcome of that something is complex, indefinite and out of one's hands. When we are dealing with agreements, human decisions etc...people can change their minds. Sadly people don't apply this to the foundations and nature of the system as a whole, they just assume it has to be.

A gardener needs to come in, burn down the shed, knock down the house and start tending to the neglected garden!

Not once did I find where landowners conservative in their attitudes, could I find any significant concession to the working people.
