Redefining Legacy: How to Be a Great Ancestor, with Rory Stewart

What if the solution to solving extreme poverty was as simple as giving cash to those who need it?
GiveDirectly, the fastest growing NGO founded this century, does just that. By allowing donors to send money directly to the world’s poorest, it has revolutionised the aid sector. In the last decade, GiveDirectly has delivered $580M+ to over 1.37 million people across eleven countries. Cash in hand, no strings attached.
In this episode, Kamal Ahmed is joined by the President of GiveDirectly Rory Stewart to discuss GiveDirectly’s work, the profound implications of direct cash transfers and why we all have a duty to do what we can to uplift the global poor. Rory’s career, which has taken him from Iraq, where he was Deputy-Governor of two provinces following the invasion in 2003, to the UK Government, where he served as Secretary of State for International Development, has profoundly shaped his approach to his own legacy, and what it means to be a good ancestor. Kamal and Rory discuss this and more in this wide-ranging interview with one of the most knowledgeable and compelling voices on international development and the charity sector.

Wow, this is a gem. Never heard or read Rory Stewart before this talk. Thank you KZread for introducing. The success isn't defined by what we have, but how we live. To be a great ancestor, lead a life as close to nature as possible.

Few people have impressed me as much as Rory Stewart. He has already crammed 6 lifetimes of highly specialized careers into his 40+ years. Been overlooked by a voting public that couldn't even appreciate what caliber of leadership and expertise this man represented, and now I see him doing this! I see him almost as a semi- divine figure who has always cherished the ordinary man and in his unique methods brings about some modern solutions to instantly enrich and give hope to the poorest souls who's daily lives are a constant struggle. Rory has probably personally experienced, through his intimate involvements, a greater understanding of the need that exists in the countless villages of the forgotten frontier!

My MP. He was not rejected by the voters, but expelled from the Tories by Boris Johnson, whom he refused to serve. I would never vote Tory, but would vote fo him if he stood as an Independent

Rory Stewart might just be the most impressive andI serious politician of his generation. Bad timing to be a sensible Tory right when the entire party lost it's collective mind.

I wonder what the wealth of someone like bill gates of Elon musk could do if it was extremely focused and localised to a specific area or country in the world. Their wealth is on the level of nations, but often the nature of modern enterprise is that it is so sparsely and ineffectively spread, the real tangible impacts are watered down by the time they reach the people who really need it. A large scale Give Directly project with the financial baking of these mega billionaires could be totally transformational for a vast number of people.

I find Rory Stewart so disappointing. He seems like he might be an actual sensible Tory, but he's fully bought in to neoliberal policies that have brought us nothing but failure.

I think he's the first Tory since Ken Clarke that I have some admiration for! Always interested to hear what people mean by "neoliberal". He's literally talking about trying to end global poverty. You're somehow against that?

@@paulmitchell9975 I'm referring more to his political career than the subject of this talk. He's currently doing a podcast with Alistair Campbell. Have a listen, it'll tell you everything you need to know about the centrist status quo theyd have us live in.

@@phillheth My man, I was listening to that podcast for years before Campbell and Stewart took it over. Great stuff. I agree he's a classic centrist. That's a position I disagree with, but it's a lot better than the extremist loonballs currently in charge. Can I ask you to clarify what you mean by neoliberal though? I think we probably agree about stuff, but sometimes it's code for "the JEEEEEEWWWWSSSSS" and Im kinda bored having that conversation

@@paulmitchell9975 ha. No. I'm no anti Semite. Neoliberalism is tricky to define, mostly I think of it as a means of government that strips away public assets and public power, so the smashing of unions and erosion of civil liberties and human rights, the wholesale theft of publicly owned utilities and services, privatisation etc. Stewart seems so badly informed on the subject of nationalisation that I can only see him as a naive, gullible useful idiot for a right that is explicitly engaged in undermining the NHS in order to replace it. Stewart sees this as a conspiracy theory.

Although focusing the concept of poverty in material terms and the ensuing choices that leaves individuals and communities is important, the concept really needs to be extended to focus on psychological and spiritual poverty within our physical realm. Within our political economic system there is a serious lack of psychological and spiritual wealth. If this was focused on and addressed our nation/world would look further to influence citizens to vote for policies to really help people in the underdeveloped world. Paying more attention and learning from traditional indigenous cultures would help, and realising how misled and scandalised western colonisers were in claiming cultural superiority over indigenous cultures. To connect back to the earth/nature while using democratically overseen technological advancements to help people could really change things. It also means furthering rather dismantling human rights in the UK could/would help the extreme poor over the world, because we would learn to be more humane. People need fixing to fix the world. Although some money here and there offers something, it doesn't teach the charity givers how to change a capitalist system that buys up governments, burns environmental laws, and people's rights of control to manage land, water, and other resources.

Rory says that giving cash to the population of entire country has not been tried yet and it appears he is very interested in doing this. He also says Africa is into digital cash yet at the same time they are not ready for cryptocurrency. Try the following: announce that you intend to raise $1Billion so that every person in 20 million person Malawi will get $50 cash (which apparently is more than the $40 needed to buy 1 pig there). The "cash" will be sent via Bitcoin. The people will quickly figure out how cryptocurrency works and you will be able to raise the funds from joyously enthusiastic and relentless Bitcoin holders throughout the world.
