If a ship hoisted black colors, you knew they were pirates. It was a flag able to strike fear into anyone. Most pirates just used a black flag with a skull and bones, or a plain black flag. The color alone was enough to signal their true intentions. Some pirates designed their own flags. Pirate Captain Bartholomew Roberts has TWELVE flags attributed to him. But did he really design all of those flags himself? In this video we'll be taking a look at all of the flags attributed to Bartholomew Roberts, their meaning, and their plausibility.

Great video! just think defining flags not corroborated by eye witnesses as false instead of unconfirmed might be too strict

yeah, unconfirmed might be a better word, but i still wouldn't use unconfirmed flags in any official context aside of usage as sidenotes
I too enjoy flags with "skellingtons" on them. Love you're vids mate. On my journey to watch them all.
Of course Blackbeard's flag didn't look like the popularly purported one! We all know that he was holding a Luger P08 and not a chalice!
My ideal pirate flag is an unamused skeleton holding the letters Y E S which stands for Your Empire Sucks
The Dread Pirate Roberts...
The original flag (the black flag w/ white skull & crossbones) did mean something all its own in the beginning. When the Templar refugees adopted it they made it black/white to represent the sides of the kabbalah tree. The deaths head reminds us that we will die. Of course there are deeper meanings beyond this but that is the base concept. Thats why organizations like "Skull & Bones" use the symbol today.

I'm just getting to watching this now. As always, I've learned some things, but without being a contrarian I want to add a historical postulation. Flags in general have been a part of history as long as there have been humans on the planet, and especially since pirates of the golden age were of western European decent, they would have been steeped in the traditions of heraldry. The basic jolly roger design having deaths head with crossed bones in behind is almost a mockery of a helmet and crossed arms on a "coat of arms". Even though we don't have many good examples of historical pirate flags, I don't feel at all remiss in stating that any flag we can think of today could, have easily been a potential flag from history. That having been said, if you'd like me to draw you up a Flag with a giant pussy on a pink field and crossed tampons so you can use it in a thumbnail that says "Blackbeards forgotten Flag?"... Because your comment was hilarious my friend ;)

i dont mind if fiction invents new pirate flags whose symbols and structure are pausible within the weird designs we have described from the period. but when the same fictional designs get re-used over and over and preached as being historical, they lose novelty and just become fake history - especially when applied to actual historical figures

@@GoldandGunpowder I agree wholeheartedly, and I have no respect for historical revisionists. It's hard to find the truth when propagandists have existed from every era. I appreciate the work you are doing to shed light on this corner of history. My comment just wanted to bring up the connection between heraldry and flag designs, and that we may never know what may or may not have adorned pirate flags. Love the channel.

My home town of Vlissingen (Flushing) still has a red flag. During the Dutch republic it was mostly used by Dutch privateers. some of those privateer flags still exist in the Zeewse museum and or the Zeeuwse archive. as there is a lot of very detailed documents going all the way back. If you can read old Dutch you can still read the ships journals.

From my understanding, there are 3-4 existing flags remaining. Most of them are in pretty incredible condition, especially the Red Jolly Roger.

Gold and Gunpowder....you might think this is dumb BUT! how about a vid on WHAT pyrate flags were made of and HOW they were made....? I mean, Roberts flag was said to be of silk....were they ALL?? did they just use whatever fabric they had? such as sail cloth or stolen upholster fabric? Were the designs on the flags made in different ways?? Was white painted on black cloth? Was white material sewn on black cloth? Was BLACK paint or tar used to paint sail cloth leaving only the white sail cloth material white as the design?? I'd Really be interested is hearing your thoughts....

every serious modern pirate historian agrees that john rackham(not "john rack", theres no evidence he was called "calico jack" either) did not fly a skull with crossed swords, because there is no period evidence of it. the design cannot be traced any earlier than the 1910s. the flag you saw in a museum is most likely a modern recreation because there are no surviving samples of flags from the golden age of piracy
