Bartholomew Roberts maintained one of the most colorful and diverse pirate companies in history. Aboard his Royal Fortune where men from different nations, races, and walks of life. However, it was far from egalitarian, nor was it a simple social structure. Every pirate was not equal. In this video I will cover all of the social castes of Roberts' company, and also some of the specific characters in the crew.

Walter Kennedy: I'm Walter Kennedy and I'm going to be a mighty pirate! Years later.... Walter Kennedy: and then I mutinied and took Bartholomew Robert's prize ship! Brothel clients: If I hear this story one more times, I'm gonna be crying myself.

Interesting how Black Bart's pirate forces were organised. Guess somewhat big number of mutinies, desertions can be attributed to adding additional layers of command to more self-governing crew model. Kinda makes you think about how dependant on good will and sense of freedom pirate crews really were, which is easy to understand seeing how they were always one bad sea battle away from the noose. Great and informative video!

My ancestors turned to piracy when Cromwells forces took England. They returned & helped restore Charles the 2nd but my family had to flee again in the 1740's. We served the true crown as we promised from Henry the 4th to Bonnie Prince Charlie. We've been adrift from our ancestral lands ever since. I guess what im getting at is that there are many many ways to end up a pirate & a good portion of those known as a pirate to one is a loyal subject to another.

Great video, used to not be a big fan of Roberts, despite his overwhelming successes. But after watching a couple of your videos on him, he and his crew have definitely gotten more of my interest. In some of the less reputable books I read when I was younger he was either described as a murderous villain who prayed on the most helpless, or some kind of old timey anti racist superhero. When in reality he was just an arrogant pirate who accepted the underlying idea of piracy, and his men it seems followed suit, even calling him a coward as he lay dying. Love it!

I like how even more illustrations (both from the period and modern art) are implemented in your videos, so there's more variety of them. Maybe in the future all of the graphics will be made of period illustrations XD BTW la Palisse is that one comic relief character reappearing every few episodes before "that one comic relief character reappearing every few episodes" concept existed.
