the point of the video is that the quartermasters authority depended from crew to crew, no pirate crew was ever the same

So basically the quartermaster was the crew's daddy. He represented them when they needed it and punished them when they acted up. Lol

I can't believe your channel isn't more popular. The quality of the videos and the knowledge is excellent. I like how you don't exaggerate things. 0:30 Ironically enough, accidents and especially drunkenness were more tolerated on Royal Navy ships, where the alcohol ration was seen as moderation for the discipline and boredom. Pirate crews were smaller and more professional as well as motivated by their share, or expected to be, just like on a merchantman, therefore, you would be likely to be thrown out of the crew for doing stuff like that too much. Thanks for these. Bosun, Carpenter and Doctor would be good too, as well as "topmen", of course. The fact of why often men from other ships being raided from these kinds of positions could be "enticed" or made an offer that they could not refuse to join pirate crews, especially if they were lacking one of those on board at the time, would also be good if not covered already. Impressment, another factor on RN ships would be a motivation to jump ship, for example.

Great history video mate! So interesting how "complicated" pirate history is! We modern day pirate krewes have a Captain, Quartermaster, a Sergeant at Arms, and a Scribe. The Quartermaster represents the Krewe and brings pressing matters to the Captain. The krewe officers service a 2 year term but can be removed at anytime with a vote by full share krewe members. I'm a member of the Krewe of the 13 here in St Augustine FL which we are all HUGE pirate history buffs! In an ironic twist of fate we are a registered 501c3 Charity! We gather plunder to give back to the local community! Full share krewe members also take a vote on matters involving plunder and events. The only thing missing is a krewe ship although some of the krewe own their own sailing vessels or power boats. Occasionally we modern pirates "borrow" a ship for pleasure rather than to commit High Seas Piracy!

That’s cute, have fun playing with your “krewe”. But REAL modern day pirates actually use speedboats, machine guns, rocket launchers, and get ransom payments from taking container ships hostage off the coast of Somalia, or oil rig workers in the Gulf of Guinea, or smuggling drugs across the U.S.-Mexico border on Falcon lake, or raiding ships they can capture in the strait of Malacca, or the Sulu and Celebrs seas. No 501c3 required.

I, too, swear ta roll up me sleeves an' work very hard ta one day be worthy of the most vital position o' booty custodian, harrrh. 💪

Great video, I always thought Black Sam and his Quartermasters were buds. If I were captain I'd be best buds with the QM.

I hope you make more videos on the jobs held aboard a pirate ship or just on the sea generally. Something on captains, first mates, bosuns, etc would be awesome!

So the quartermaster's duty was a combination of what i've thought to be the quartermaster's and the first mate's duties. Which leads me to ask what the first mate job even was. Could you please explain further the difference between the two.

What is the music that plays at 8:25 called?

Did pirate captains have first mates or was that the same as a quartermaster

I use to have my own row boat and am pretty sure not very much in this video is true.

Think you could do a video about what kind of tobacco pirates would have most likely smoked at the time?

The Quartermaster was not really a unique or even new role: The Landsknechte of the 16th. Century had the same office but named it Profoss (which later turned into the military police).

Great video sir! A question: If the quartermaster was such a check and balance of power so to speak on the captain, was their relationship strained and forced? Or was the QM usually the right hand man of the captain?
