Then last night after work, I thought I saw a rat but as he ran away I noticed the weasel hop and the fluffy tail- I came home and my dad said he was probably a pine marten. Cutest little dude next to my ferret I’ve ever seen. I know this video is old but thank you! It showed me everything I was curious about in my wild encounter last night.

    So you're saying your house REAKS BIG TIME! YUCK! FERRETS are a complete opposite of the pine Martin or a Fisher cat. A Fishers have been well known to kill adult BOBCATS, ADULT white tail deer, and are the ONLY ANIMAL that intentionally hunts porcupine. They're the porcupines number 1 threat and killer. They bite the porcupines face until it's too weak, then they begin eating it alive, through the stomach. Very strong, brutal hunters in the weasel family. They're also the ONLY WEASEL FAMILY, and any other tree climbing animal that can not only climb trees, but, the ONLY ANIMAL that can descend from a tree HEAD FIRST. they're EXTREMELY FAST, FEROCIOUS, critters. Still the most sought after fur to date in the lower 48. Next to bobcat, and wolves, they'll bring a nice payday at the fur buyers place.

    I do agree that ferrets have a smell. But if you bath them every two weeks and keep there cages clean it's no worse than a cat. Owning ferrets just means all the things that aren't bolted down just end up inside the bottom of your couch.😏

    My family has had two ferrets. An albino named Snoops, and a standard sable named Baxter, the latter being my pet ferret, and he was my best friend. He never bit me, only gave harmless playful love nips with his teeth, but never sank them onto my finger. He was a little stinky, but that's still natural, even for a de-scented ferret, and it never bothered me. He got a bath frequently, had his claws trimmed, and was given plenty of good care and lots of love.

  • @xXJanValentineXx

    @xXJanValentineXx

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@johnredcorn5650 Actually, no. They have a subtle musky odor, but do not 'stink'. The more you bathe them, the worse they will smell, because their skin feels the need to produce MORE oils. Once a year is fine for a ferret. Linens need to be washed once to twice a week, litter pans scooped 2-3 times a day. Proper diet also plays a large part in odor. Most people that own ferrets don't take these things into consideration. Ferrets are part of the Mustelidae family, same as Polecats, Otters, Stoats, Wolverines, Etc. I'm sorry whoever you've known does not properly take care of their ferrets. The most we ever had at once was 10, and guests did not even know we had them upon entering our home, or even their room, until they see the ferret themselves/their sleeping cage. :)

    @@jordanpayne6838 Red Squirrels are actually more adapted to having the pine marten as a predator compared to the grey squirrel, so the grey squirrel is much easier prey for them and they are much more abundant the benefit of having much less competition for food outways the risks of having a Predator they are already adept at dealing with. There is an area in Ireland where pine martens are starting to thrive again and it's having a positive effect on the red squirrel population so much so that they are already making plans to boost pine marten numbers in the UK.

    I actually saw one of these guys on a hike once. Specifically, a hike on Mt. Rainier with my mom. On the ground, waddling about and contentedly grazing were many marmots. We had just had an encounter with a Gray Jay who decided it wanted our trail mix....and then worked out how to remove the rock holding the bag shut while we rested. I look over to one side and there, sprawled across the branch of a pine tree lower down slope from the trail so the branch was at head height, was a drowsy pine marten maybe ten feet away from where we were walking. It was looking right back at me, yawned, and blinked a few times. It was pretty cool.

    One time my friends and I were playing outside. We heard a loud thump behind us, and I turned around and it was a crying baby raccoon. The mother had died, or abandoned them, we assumed. Over the next few days, the baby raccoons kept falling out of the tree. We fed them, there were three, and we put them in a box until we figured out what to do. They slept in the box outside by the tree for a day until we found a place for them. I was playing outside at school the day after we had put them in the box, and the tree where they were was in full view of the playground. I witnessed a lady steal the box of three baby raccoons. I never saw them again. That is the closest encounter I ever had with wild animals.

    Now I don't know about you guys, but my favorite member of the weasel family is the American Mink. I was up in the thousand islands area, and there was a mink living around the cottage we were staying in. I had a rubber boat, and when I was being really quiet and low paddling around the little cove, the mink was watching me from the shore. I was real close in the weeds, just laying down in this inflatable boat, watching this amazing little brown mustelid stare me down. She (I say she because this was a smaller individual) seemed more curious than anything, and later in the day I actually got her to eat a goby that I caught. She came within three feet of me. I will never ever forget that experience.

    +Nickolas Faz It's not surprising, considering both Caniformia and Feliformia evolved from a common ancestor. Some members of Carnivora retain traits closer to that extinct ancestor. A prime example is the Genet, thought by some biologists to be the closest living resemblance(morphologically speaking)to said ancestor.

    I actually have seen one of these in person in their environment. He came into our campsite in the BWCA while chasing a rabbit around. He just followed the rabbit around and did not care about any of us in the camp. The rabbit would sprint from one bush to another, with the marten following right behind. He caught him and dragged it right through the center of our camp for us all to see. It was awesome.

    The pine marten has surprisingly long legs for a mustelid! I am obsessed with pine martens. And just weasels in general. The pine marten is (in my opinion as well as straight up facts) one of the most beautiful things in the animal kingdom! I can't get enough of the wee beauties.
