We Lost A Legend. (Justin Schmidt's Final Interview)
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
It is with great sadness that I let the Coyote Pack and Brave Wilderness universe know that we lost our Yoda this past weekend. Entomologist Justin Schmidt passed away Saturday evening from Parkinson’s Disease and transcended into his next wild adventure beyond this life. As many of you know he is the Peter Benchley to my Steven Spielberg and his brilliant book The Sting of the Wild is what inspired me to climb up the Insect Sting Pain Index. Without this roadmap to entomological education and our own spin of entertainment myself, my team and Brave Wilderness as we all know it would not be where it all is today. I am proud to have called him a friend, honored to have spent many hours in his presence and humbled to call him the Yoda of Sting. To my knowledge I was the last person to spend significant on camera time with him in a detailed dive into the world of stings. Ill never forget that last big hug he gave me and how excited he was to hear about all the new bug fanatics we were reaching using the Internet as a vehicle to share the alien world of insects. Justin will be greatly missed by all who knew him but I know on the other side he is out there with a bug net, a fearlessness, and a tarantula hawk sized smile chasing the next stinging insect. Thank you for being such an inspiration my friend, I will continue to carry on your love and understanding for our planets misunderstood insects!
Justin Schmidt is the author of The Sting of the Wild, please consider purchasing his book: amzn.to/3y7964C

Something about the way he moved and gestured told me he was really sick, but he doesn't look at all distressed or annoyed to be there with you, he looks really happy and excited to be talking about the stuff he loves, it's such a shame we had to lose a legend but he's off catching bugs in the afterlife now. R.I.P Justin,

Yeah, he is giving off 3 major indicators of neurological disease in his movement which is probably what you are picking up. His extremities like his fingers move very little when he gestures, but his knees and larger limbs appear very shaky and jittery, the way his arms move down to the side of the chair for added stability as though he can't fully balance on his own, and his lack of head and eye movement in synch with his gestures are all decent indicators of at least a minor neurological issue, unfortunately due to old age its not enough to think of it as a diagnosis that something is wrong, but they are all red flags for sure, it is very unfortunate he had to suffer such a terrible disease, he seemed like such a kindhearted and wholesome man

This was tasteful. A kind-hearted tribute to someone that's very clearly important to Coyote and the crew. A lovely drone shot of some landscape and a simple message of "rest in peace". My thoughts exactly. Rest well, Mr. Schmidt.

He created the pain index for the Hymenoptera order of insects. He will likely be remembered for as long as his work is recorded and there is people to read it which could be as long as humans exist. He may become less known in time but he will never fully be forgotten. Scientists are often immortalized because there name is attached to there research accomplishments. As an example I know about some random German zoologist named Johann that lived hundreds of years ago simply because he was the first one to give Tardigrades a name.

Absolute legend, a pillar of entomology like many before him. May we all continue to discover this planet.
RIP. He was truly a legend
Couple of things Coyote - first, thank you so much for your videos and educational content. I believe that you author this content not for personal fame or fortune (although contributions through your various channels would not be frowned upon :) ) - but you do it to advance science and educate armchair enthusiasts like myself. I want to also give a "hats-off" to you for working with kids on your backpack adventures - the patience you show for these kids is awesome... Lastly - thank you for posting this particular content - Justin was an inspiration to many young people as well as seasoned scientists. Justin will never be forgotten and was a true pioneer. Thank you Coyote - please continue your wonderful content and continue educating us!
His happyness while dealing with parkinsons is something that is truely admiring about him. My grandma had parkinsons and I watched her struggle to continue doing her art that she loved but she sure didnt let it stop her. Justin will be remembered by many for what he has done and for you showing alot of people who he was and his accomplishments.
This is super sweet. I have a grandpa-esque mentor too, gonna cry hard when he departs! Rest in peace, Justin, thank you for your work and frienship with Coyote.
RIP to the king of sting 😔
Truly a man driven by his passion for a science few others would chase to such an extent as he did. May the legend of stinging insect entomology rest in peace 🙏

When I heard this news the other day I was Heartbroken. What a true Legend and absolute Hero. He seemed so kind and sweet too. May he rest in paradise. Another great one gone from the world, but never forgotten.
I love what you do but most importantly, I love who you are. Thanks you for this.
Thank you to both of you. You have both changed the minds of millions and opened deeper thinking to the world we live in showing off how amazing each creature is in wonderful detail. Thank you for your contributions. Rest in peace Mr. Schmidt!

The message Coyote delivered for the intro was disheartening and very heartwarming! I know neither of them, but I do know of these two. Watching the journey from the beginning of Coyote taking his own path for the sting pain index, is when I learned of Justin Schmidt and the origin of his collected thoughts of which bite or sting warrants its placement on his most impactful tier list. The heartbreaking portion is to come to learn of the loss, and heartwarming comes from his admiration for Justin as not only a person, but as he said a friend and mentor.
