The Piccolo Trumpet - Czardas

Музыка

This is a review of a piccolo trumpet and comparing it to a 'normal' Bb trumpet. I'm not, in any way, claiming to be a capable trumpet player, so the abhorrent tuning needs to be excused instead of pointed out.

    I bought a piccolo trumpet, and indded with the standard mouthpieces it does not play easier the higher octave Bb4-Bb5 compared to the standard trumpet . BUT then I realized that the fault is in the mouthpieces and I bought small mouthpieces of 11mm-14,4.mm diameter from resin or acorn that are normally used for wooden cornetti musical instruments , AND THE MIRACLE HAPPENED ! Playing the Bb4-Bb5 octave became almost as easy as playing the Bb3-Bb4 octave in the standard trumpet.

    Out of curiosity how does your cornet/trumpet upper range translate to this? So lets say I am reasonably fine playing top C on cornet, roughly what do you think I could expect to hit when using piccolo?

  • @TrentHamilton

    @TrentHamilton

    7 жыл бұрын

    The piccolo trumpet doesn't necessarily make high notes easier, it just makes them more tuneful (at least, that's the theory). A top C on a trumpet is an equivalent difficulty to a C (one octave lower) on a piccolo trumpet.

    Personally, I find it easier to play high notes on the smaller instruments - like a piccolo trumpet or a soprano cornet, but then my upper range is pretty terrible. I think for someone with a good upper range, it's true that they won't necessarily get any higher, but for someone who struggles to play above the stave on a normal sized trumpet or cornet (guilty), the smaller instruments can make it easier. I find those notes are easier to get, and easier to keep playing later into the practice session. It could just be the result of using a shallower mouthpiece, of course. I can get a bit higher on a Bb or C trumpet or Bb cornet by using something ridiculously shallow, like a 7D, but then the lower range suffers, and it just doesn't feel right. You also need less air to play high notes on the smaller instruments though, so that helps with duration.

  • @carpetsomething

    Based on the fact that I can get roughly as high on cornet (not my instrument, I was just playing my friends a few weeks ago) as I can on my baritone I would expect you could probably hit top c on piccolo trumpet?

    in the late 80s i bought a new getzen 3 valve capri piccilo trumpet and a capri flugel horn on a combo special purchase. i was well satisfied with both but i found i could play my old severinsen getzen easier in the same high range by changing the mouthpiece and tuning slide so i traded the piccolo trumpet off. i lived in a big college town so selling it was no problem.if i had bought a 4 valve piccolo trumpet i might have kept it.. my experience is if you dont have a high range with a full size trumpet you wont have one with a piccolo trumpet either. i found the regular sized trumpet was easier to play in that high range so that wqas a supprize to me.

    I am 16. I play trumpet in my school band and extra audition band I got into in grade 10. We play level 4-6 and it is hard but fun. Yesterday my friend and I were talking about piccolo instruments. She just got a Eb clarinet. Well this new song we got we are basically on playing notes between c and a c above the staff. It's pretty difficult to play, it's graded at a 5 1/2 so im struggling. I really want to try a piccolo trumpet just to see what it's like. It's adorable and I would love to try one 😊

    the history would be hard work and dedication, but since all of the valve combinations would be practically the same across everything that is valved in the brass world (tuba, eupho, trumpet, french horn, valve trombone, etc.) then if you know the key of the instrument you can play it

    Because unless you're using your fourth valve it's actually more comfortable to use your pinky ring.

    +Trent Hamilton Would it be possible for you to obtain a microphone or at least something to reduce the amount of reverb/echo in your videos? I'm not one to be a stickler about audio quality, but considering that these types of videos are demonstrating the differing sounds of these instruments, I think it would make sense to have a microphone that can convey them clearer. Just my honest opinion, I understand if there's just not enough to spare for one of those; microphones are rather expensive! Great video though, I play the trumpet and would love to pick up a piccolo trumpet someday, this video helped a lot, so thank you!

    Unsolicited advice, feel free to disregard, but I've been really happy with the Samson C01U studio condenser mic. Cost me about $75 (plus shipping) from the US, and has performed beautifully as a vocal mic. (check out my SoundCloud under the same username if you're curious about the results - everything I've uploaded here is embarrassingly out of date)

    Unfortunately the piccolotrumpet made the cornetto ( it has a corpus of wood with seven holes, similar to the recorder, but has a mouthpiece smaller than at normal for trumpets and a very lovely sound less trompety rather a bit going in the direction of the sound of an oboe). If you haven't ever heard of the cornetto instrument and have a greater interest in brass instruments and instruments working the same way I very much recommend you to look it up!

    If you can play a G above top C on a standard Bb Trumpet you have a slightly better range than me, I can play D (or sometimes and Eb when I'm doing scales to warm up) above top C. Working on improving my range though
