The Physics of Noseriding: The science of surfing’s fluid dance | Patagonia Films
The noseride is one of surfing’s peak moments: part fluid dynamics, part magic. But how does noseriding actually work? What makes this suspension between sea and sky even possible? The Physics of Noseriding explores the question through the eyes of Namaala, a young surfer whose people were flying on the water before the world even knew what surfing was. Her curiosity invites us to examine the sensation of levitation that unfolds as wave, surfboard and surfer come together for surfing’s fluid dance.
Written and directed by Lauren L. Hill. Director of Photography: Jai Anderson. Starring: Namaala Slabb. Supporting surfers: Belinda Baggs, Ari Browne, Leah Dawson, Lauren L. Hill, Rosie Jaffurs, Lola Mignot, Josie Prendergast, Matt Cuddihy, Elise Trigger, Crystal Thornburg-Homcy, Dave Rastovich, Crystal Dzigas and Kelis Kaleopaʻa.

About Patagonia:
At Patagonia, we appreciate that all life on earth is under threat of extinction. We’re using the resources we have-our business, our investments, our voice and our imaginations-to do something about it.

As a physics major and surfer, this was awesome
the absolute shade thrown at shortboarders with that depiction 😂 @ 3:12

that guy is "krooky" and he's actually a really epic alternative surfer (finless, surf mats)
So inspiring! “Real skill is knowing not by thinking, but by feeling it.”
Incredible variety of shots in this film. For me, women on logs are some of the most elegant surfers. Smooth, calculated approach for the best flow.
Tune ID for the intro song would make my day. Awesome vid again. Hope you all enjoyed it as much as i did! X
Freaking Crookie showing up at 3:11, loved your cameo mate
vibes!! Underwater shot of the board in the pocket is fantastic.
This is the video I’ve wanted for years, I’ve always wanted to know how this noseriding magic works! Thank you Lauren!
I love Patagonia so much. Beautiful storytelling and celebration of humans and Earth!
Wonderful narration and presentation, bravo Namaala! Explaining the interaction of fluid dynamics with riding, brilliant. Thanks 😊
Wonderful video! The editing, comedic timing, the ode to wes anderson color palette, the soundtrack, the surfing, i love it!
I love the elegance of a longboard ... what a treat - thanks! 🙏
Absolutely beautiful!!!! 🎉🎉
Awesome presentation... fun, intellectual and informative.... Very Cool, Thanks
So clean. So refreshing. And I think I get it now
thank you for centering a young indigenous woman in this piece and crediting polynesians for being the originators!
So well done!!!!!
Beautiful! What was the word at ~8:43? "In my language, we say ____. It's play in relation to the real world." I love the concept, but I couldn't quite make out the word, and would love to know.
That was SO good! I would love to see this as a series with Namaala
Wow this blow my mind, excellent job 💪😍
Anyone know the song that starts the clip off?
Thanks for this good energie !🤙🏾🏄🏾♂️
so funny! in this video I found a perfect balance of notions and beautiful images!
Beautiful - thank you!
Beautiful little film!
the point is putting the board on the inside rail as if you wanted to get out of the wave and your weight on the nose will keep it falling into the face of the wave, creating a metastable system
That absolutely made my day! Holy cow. So good.
Simply 5/5!
"Minimum drag and effortless acceleration" is also my sailing goal. Excellent production all around.
very nice work Lauren!
Awesome film 👌
Wonderful 💙
Thanks Patagonia! Nice video
So good! Congrats
Beautiful video.
Magnificent!
Sehr Inspirierend !!!
Awesome. 💙💙
Love this
so good!
Bravo!! BRAVA
beautiful and friendly film
such a cool production
song in the beginning?
excellent video
Does anyone know what song that is in the beginning?
Witty credit at the end: "Production Legends." (Rhea, Belen, Zara, Crystal - Yayy!!!) The photo-editing to get Coanda Effect and surface tension, um, complementing (?) each other is, yup, legendary!
Awesome
insane !!!
What music is on this video???
More surf stuff ❤😍
Wonderful film. Where was this film 50 plus years ago when I was learning the nose?
Boss it girl. Practice so they say makes perfect 👍🏾
Delicious just delicious!!! Funny, simple, beautiful, colourful, cheerful, just a breath of fresh air Luv it
This is such a cool film
Gorgeous
Noseriding is the poetry in which a surfer shares their personal and deep connection with the sea.
Omg i watched this at hook fish/Proof Lab in mill valley! So cool
Love it ! Big Wes Anderson vibes in this video 💛
love the shortboarder hahaha
yeah this was nice . Thank you :)
This looks incredibly fun, yet stupidly difficult.
❤
Rad! 🤙
I don't know how I can do it. But I'm glad I can.
Lovely video, addresses a poorly understood experience. Of course nothing like the fluid dynamics around a longboard is remotely simple. The Coanda effect may be operational on the deck of the board but that would generate lift on the tail which is not quite what is wanted, and there is not a lot of ‘jet’ of water (relative to the surrounding water) under the board. I wonder if the flow around the tail rocker is more important in generating a downward pressure on the tail. Think of an inverted aeroplane wing (not quite a perfect analogy but close enough). Look at the shape of Ben Skinner’s Cherrypicker. The price of more curved flow around the tail is a slower board but for nose riding that’s usually ok
good film
Gorgeous, now I gotta go and buy a log again, sheesh 😉
Ahh man I really gotta work on my cross stepping!
be light on a massive board definitely helps
who @ in 4:45???
❤❤❤
Ok now I know the physics, I’m going nose riding… yeah right 😂
What book is Namaala reading from?
Coooooooool
GLidinnn Awesome...
feel it
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:15 🏄♂️ *Noseriding in surfing is a unique skill that requires balance and technique.* 01:47 🌊 *Wave riding begins with the sun's uneven heating of the planet, creating wind and waves.* 02:22 🏄♀️ *Surfers have always used balance and forward trim for nose riding.* 03:08 🏄♂️ *Longboards are designed for subtlety and minimizing effort in the water.* 03:52 🌊 *The physics of surfing involves forces like buoyancy, gravity, drag, and momentum.* 04:55 🌊 *Nose riding balances forces like drag and momentum for speed and stability.* 05:44 🌊 *The Koanda effect plays a crucial role in keeping the board stuck to the wave face.* 06:54 🏄♂️ *Shifting weight and subtle adjustments are key to nose riding on a longboard.* 07:53 🏄♀️ *The "Hang Hip" technique involves committing weight to the nose and dancing on the board.* 08:51 🌊 *The real function of nose riding in surfing is a balance of physics and indescribable magic.* Made with HARPA AI
I wanna go surfing now
is there actually a book?
Ahhaha Vegemite and PB… so Oz since the first sec 🙌
Veggiemite and peanut butter is not a good analogy unless I missed where something went totally wrong.
10,000++ years???
0:05
lol the krooky footage
Namaala Slabb is almost like a made up name for a long boarder. Like the dentist named Fred Paine or the proctologist named Don Butts. 😂 (Much love.) 😎
The Vegemite comment 😂
great vid but voiceover sounds like an ad. a more natural speaking would have been more suitable

Its very common on KZread now, you write the script and hire a voice actor off fiverr etc.
Patagonia got this one right! Logging is for chicks
child like dross
Veeeery few females can actually nose ride. It is extremely rare to see a female, cross stepping, noseriding or especially nose riding "correctly". You have more chance of seeing a flamingo pumping gas at the gas station. THAT's how rare it is !
Came to learn about the physics of nose riding. Dont need a lesson on the physics of standing up or waves and tides. Nice try padding the video
Awesome video as far as raw information, but I could do without the subtle, yet very explicit virtue signaling
Had to stop watching because the voice of the book was so infuriating lol
Bad narration style. Not a good choice.
The Birth of Venus - she did it on a seashell 😂 7:50 en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Birth_of_Venus
the curl of the wave pushes down on the tail of the board, it's not that complicated
❤❤❤
