Five hundred miles off the Chilean coast, there’s a small island surrounded by thriving seas and powerful surf. When Ramón Navarro, Léa Brassy and Kohl Christensen traveled there recently, they learned how the island’s residents are working to protect their wild waters and wild fisheries-and why, on the remote Isla Alejandro Selkirk, the word for outsiders is plásticos.

Dear Patagonia, Please do one about the beaches in the small city of northern Chile, called Arica. Particularly, the area of Chinchorro/Las Machas, where you will find that one of the few wetlands in South America, has been inundated by the trash some of the people who live there keep throwing. This wetland, which is along the pacific coast, houses over 120 different animal species, most of them migrating from other areas of the Americas, and it's considered to be essential for the survival of these animals. Also, Arica hostes surf championships every year. You'll find good waves over there. People need to be educated about protecting the wetlands. It is really sad to see the quantity of trash that you find along the path of that wetland.

Some of the comments here are soo damn salty. Patagonia is a company, they need to make money to survive - but they’re also NOT fast fashion and even if the beauty of this video inspires a single person to make a difference, than at least it’s something! Just because a person or company isn’t perfect doesn’t mean that the effort they make should go unnoticed, every little thing counts

GREAT WHITE PLANT EATER Ya, those 300 km long lines with tens of thousands of hooks on them. As well, the amazingly efficient drag nets that scour the sea floor and destroy it for generations with one drag. And indiscriminately take everything their nets catch and throw the unwanted dead species back overboard. Commercial fishing is the problem. Harvesting small amounts of fish for dinner is not.

I lived in a fishing village, and worked on swordfish and grouper boats for 5 years. Every captain Would fish in restricted areas, cut the lines on bicatch ( fish or turtles that should have hooks removed ), and exceed their limit. The fishing industry is single handedly destroying reefs, healthy fish populations, and our oceans in general. Your comment is extremely inaccurate.

Progressives start from a moral motivation, but unfortunately too often allow this noble impulse to deteriorate into righteous posturing and spiritual one-up-manship.. ridiculous infighting that weakens the movement. Meanwhile, the juggernaut of amoral corporate power doesn't suffer from such bickering.

I'd have to disagree with the statement at the end, that we are all outsiders on this planet. On the contrary, this planet is our home. We cannot think of ourselves as separate from it, because there is no life for us apart from it. And to start we must think locally first, not globally. There is not much the average person can do about things on the other side of the world. There is plenty of stuff to work on even if we mind out own business.
