Five hundred miles off the Chilean coast, there’s a small island surrounded by thriving seas and powerful surf. When Ramón Navarro, Léa Brassy and Kohl Christensen traveled there recently, they learned how the island’s residents are working to protect their wild waters and wild fisheries-and why, on the remote Isla Alejandro Selkirk, the word for outsiders is plásticos.

About Patagonia:
At Patagonia, we appreciate that all life on earth is under threat of extinction. We’re using the resources we have-our business, our investments, our voice and our imaginations-to do something about it.

Thank you Patagonia for showing us the hidden treasures of the world and that there IS still good on this planet. Thank you!
el verdadero sentido de habitar la tierra ! muchas gracias por este material
Dear Patagonia, Please do one about the beaches in the small city of northern Chile, called Arica. Particularly, the area of Chinchorro/Las Machas, where you will find that one of the few wetlands in South America, has been inundated by the trash some of the people who live there keep throwing. This wetland, which is along the pacific coast, houses over 120 different animal species, most of them migrating from other areas of the Americas, and it's considered to be essential for the survival of these animals. Also, Arica hostes surf championships every year. You'll find good waves over there. People need to be educated about protecting the wetlands. It is really sad to see the quantity of trash that you find along the path of that wetland.
Que filete! Ojalá todos cuidáramos así! El lugar en que vivimos! 🙌🏻🌎 NO más plástico!!

Amazing film and very inspiring
Some of the comments here are soo damn salty. Patagonia is a company, they need to make money to survive - but they’re also NOT fast fashion and even if the beauty of this video inspires a single person to make a difference, than at least it’s something! Just because a person or company isn’t perfect doesn’t mean that the effort they make should go unnoticed, every little thing counts

I don't believe that private company make the world better. Juste because their products be not a solution by the simple fact the ecoevolution will not possible without socialevolution. For the majority of the population, patagonia products is so much expensive. Believe that business is a solution, is a riches people reasoning. And patagonia doesn't make exception to the rules even if their effort.

@@Bled00 the message is just an idea. The reality is they want electricity, web connexion and what about their demography? @@clo3342 so how do you i'm rich?do you even know my life style? So let follow your pov, nothig good can come from a private company, I guess because any company has to make money right? You are using concepts am not familiar with, so to get ecoevolution you need socialevolution right? How do you change the mindset of our population? You need to get to people and that's what this brand is doing, by exposing problems, having fairtrade, supporting enviromental movements and so on. A private company has more impact in our society that an ONG, because people who don't care about earth see the ONG, they catalog that as extremist without even thinking, just as quickly you catalog me as rich...

Great film!
Beautifully documented. Beautiful and simple, as it should be. Thank you Patagonia.
So many "surf" films, or films that even include surf or surfers, tack on a socially beneficial outing or something. Nice to see this one that touched on the surf but then stuck with the sustainability efforts of the local community.
Fantástico !
Wah! I didn't get my surf fix. Oh well, all that other stuff was, I guess, AMAZINGLY INSPIRATIONAL.
Very inspiring community!
So rad, let's fly to this remote island and cruise around those plastic free beaches with our jetskis. Expose the place and hope for the best because we talked a little bit about ecology and how amazing these people are, oh by the way can you grab me a coke can fresh of the boat .... Are you serious Patagonia? Let's have your ambassadors ride their bike to surf their home break for a year and make a movie about it, that would be environmentally futuristic!
@elore7108

It's actually pretty difficult to get there. The island does not even have commercial flights, so it's almost as difficult as asking for permission to go to Antarctica. I get what you mean though, just look at what is happening on Easter Island now that the continental Chilean tourists have arrived over there on commercial flights.
There's got to be heaps of huge breaks all over the southern part of South America! All around Argentina and Chile! Peru must catch some serious southern Pacific swells! Love to explore that! You few people out there that get paid to surf.......I just hope you know how lucky you really are!!!
Can’t wait for the Patagonia dirtbike series!

While big wave surfers have tremendous respect for the ocean, I believe the fisherman has even greater respect. Everything they receive is from the ocean including their livelihood, all while risking their lives at times...Huge props to both.

GREAT WHITE PLANT EATER Ya, those 300 km long lines with tens of thousands of hooks on them. As well, the amazingly efficient drag nets that scour the sea floor and destroy it for generations with one drag. And indiscriminately take everything their nets catch and throw the unwanted dead species back overboard. Commercial fishing is the problem. Harvesting small amounts of fish for dinner is not.
@matthews852

I lived in a fishing village, and worked on swordfish and grouper boats for 5 years. Every captain Would fish in restricted areas, cut the lines on bicatch ( fish or turtles that should have hooks removed ), and exceed their limit. The fishing industry is single handedly destroying reefs, healthy fish populations, and our oceans in general. Your comment is extremely inaccurate.

WOW AMAZING STORY --I WAS THE 1K LIKE 🌞🌞🌙🌙👍
Sometimes the title can "mislead" but as most true stories go, the largest wave is the one made by our conscience upon the world we live in. What is palpable and what is not. The planet is real and the ocean too. We need to see beyond consumption and even beyond pleasure "consumption". What does it cost the rest of the world for one individual to live the life he/she wants...?
Bit of a misleading title, but a cool vid all the same!
Ok did you guys see that guys beard on his neck! Damn
Before watching I took from the title not being "biggest" that they meant large both in height and in length. After watching I understood its neither.

To all the armchair critics: please read the book " Let My People Go Surfing" by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia. Also: don't let Perfectionism be the enemy of the Good. Progressives start from a moral motivation, but unfortunately too often allow this noble impulse to deteriorate into righteous posturing and spiritual one-up-manship.. ridiculous infighting that weakens the movement. Meanwhile, the juggernaut of amoral corporate power doesn't suffer from such bickering.
I'd have to disagree with the statement at the end, that we are all outsiders on this planet. On the contrary, this planet is our home. We cannot think of ourselves as separate from it, because there is no life for us apart from it. And to start we must think locally first, not globally. There is not much the average person can do about things on the other side of the world. There is plenty of stuff to work on even if we mind out own business.
