The Physics and Philosophy of Time Travel

Фильм және анимация

What if everything we know about time is merely an illusion? Could find a way out of it, by breaking the construct of how the universe progresses? And so, would it be possible to break the natural flow of time?

Often when people hear the term "#TimeTravel," it is in relation to a person going either forward or backwards in time, without any physical changes to their body. It would be funny if you travel back in time to see a baby version of you, 20 years ago. But instead, when you jumped out of the machine, you are in the shape of a baby, just like the one you’d like to see in the first place.
In our understanding of the normal flow of time, we are actually moving from the past to the future. There are different interpretations of this, but what people usually refer to as time travel usually means either getting to the future faster or travelling into the past. In any case, instead of the normal flow of time, we change the rate by some X amount.
According to Newtonian mechanics, we either perceive time as linear and deterministic. But ever since Albert Einstein published the theory of relativity, the Newtonian conception of absolute time and space has been replaced by the idea that time has a subjective significance to everyone. In this case, time is one dimension of space-time in special relativity (SR). And of dynamically curved space-time in general relativity (GR).
From here on, the possibility of moving backwards or forwards in time might not be as farfetched as one might think. In this case, it might just be as simple as how ordinary beings can move between different points in space.
There are many different hypothetical answers for time travel, and over the years, those scenarios have been put forward by notable scientists. Essentially, these scenarios are different from the notion of a physical machine with levers and dials that H.G. Wells proposed.
Einstein also previously showed that time actually runs differently in different situations. This basically implies that time passes at different rates for different observers based on their travelling speed.
Here’s a very interesting example. The astronauts onboard the ISS orbit the Earth at 28,000 km/h (17,500 miles/h). Taking into account the conflicting factors of GR and SR, we’ll get the net time dilation effects on the astronauts with respect to an observer on the planet’s surface.
The astronaut onboard the spaceship will get a #TimeDilation of -0.000026 seconds per day. For a typical crew member who stays on the ISS for 6 months, the total time dilation would be about 5 milliseconds. In such a case where the astronaut has a twin, the astronaut has experienced less passage of time than his twin counterpart who remained on the Earth’s surface.
Giving the option to fast-forward through time is a pretty cool idea. Though it would be a one-way process where you wouldn't have the chance to go back. There might, however, be some scientific basis within the theory of relativity, supporting the possibility of time travel under certain scenarios.
There was a scientist named Kurt Gödel in the early 19th century. He showed that there are some solutions to the field equations of GR. It describes space-time so warped that they contain “closed time-like curves”. This is where an individual time-cone twists and closes in on itself. It allows a path from the present to the past or to the future.
Since we're on the topic, we'll mention a few notable attempts by popular scientists on time travel.
In 1994, Theoretical physicist Miguel Alcubierre proposed a speculative scenario. This involves a spacecraft that would contract space in front of it, and expand space behind it. If this shortcut is taken, it will result in effective faster-than-light travel. You might even be able to use it for time travel.
Other theoretical physicists have been thinking about these kinds of shortcuts as well. For example, Kip Thorne and Paul Davies think it's possible to use a wormhole and travel through space-time. In a similar way as GR could be used to make instantaneous spatial travel plausible.

In my thought We could actually go to past for example when we see at space it shows the past cause the farther it is light takes that much time to reach us and we know that space can be bent , compressed and stretched then what if we compress the space and go to Proxima centuri faster than light then we would actually be there in the past like what we are seeing now cause what we are seeing is billion of years old so if we compress space and get there in 1 min wouldn't be billion of years in the past and if we see at earth we'll see what earth looked like in the past from there and if we again compressed space and travelled back to earth then wouldn't we be in past way back ? And if we use time dilation to fast forward in time and get to where we want in future (technically in past) . So is it possible to travel back in time I know there is no wrap technology but theoretically it is possible isn't it to bend space ?

Maybe that's a possibility. But as long as you're doing a time thing.i would think you would want to go forward to see what's going to be. But it seems like there is just more of the same but in a different way and situation at that time. Meaning : like a movie that's done with the same script but done by different actor's. Or a car that's like one of the past but better with the technology. To me there is so much that hasn't been thought of yet that would make things better but at the same time making it better for humanity. One of The problem with the world today is. The more advanced we seem to get. The more humans forget where they were at a time and it's all about themselves and certain self-centered ways to get over on the one's that still haven't gotten where they should be. Not to say the hand outs to everyone that doesn't deserve it is the answer, because That's just what is happening now and that just makes it harder for the one's that have to pay for that somewhere down the road. Meaning the future is going backwards because it is not going about things in a way that's a step into the right direction. I'm Hopeful that someway things will get balanced out to where 2023 won't be a seesaw of the ups and downs. Seems pretty stupid that the predicament we are in now was not noticed by some that could surely have known it was inedible it was going down the way it did.As some one said to me .It is what it is so just deal with it. You are on your own. As I thought to myself. You can probably imagine. 🤔 And you are probably right. 😃

See, the problem here is the assumption that time is ONE dimension of space-time. Time, like space, is actually 3-dimensional. But, we’re only capable of perceiving that one, linear dimension. We’re we able to perceive, and access, the second of time’s 3 dimensions, we would be able to easily shift forwards and backwards through time. Add in the third temporal dimension, and we’d be able to shift “sideways” into alternate timelines. Ancient Greek mathematicians understood the concept, but only bits of their knowledge remain. It’s a puzzle with many missing pieces.

@@Mayank-mf7xr Sorry this took a while. I’m old, and don’t check my notifications often. Plus, I had to decide where to start. You seem educated, so probably don’t need this first bit. But, others might. So… kzread.info/dash/bejne/qo5lxcOmlZjbkaw.html Now, while GTR is the most widely traveled path in studying the universe, it is not the only path. There is also QT. Relativistic rules apply sporadically, if at all, on the quantum level. No complete answer has yet emerged on how to integrate quantum mechanics with relativity, but the studies are ongoing, and much has been learned. My own theories are exactly that, theories. I have yet to prove, or disprove, my hypothesis. But, it is a jumping off point, and telling others might spark ideas I have not thought of myself. As for the ancient Greek connection, the key there is in their understanding of advanced mathematics. For instance, even though they used letters from their own alphabet to represent numbers, they also used exponential notations, which are often overlooked by translators transcribing into modern languages. Look at the book of Revelations, in any modern copy of The Holy Bible, originally written in Greek, the scholarly language of that time period. You will find the “number of the Beast” listed as 666. The letter for 6, in Greek mathematics, is theta, or T. But, the original was not TTT, it was something akin to Tt*t* (upper case, lower case, italicized), denoting exponents. So, this would be [(6 to the 6th power) to the 6th power]. A rather large number to right, without exponents, and easily misinterpreted by those familiar with the language but not with mathematics. Some I have spoken with over the past couple of decades even posit that this number may represent the number of alternate dimensions directly accessible from our own, based on clues they see in the context. But, there aren’t enough of those clues to support that. If you are a student, perhaps you will be part of finding the answer to fitting QT into GTR, and/or ST. If so, maybe my own theory will spark an idea, positive or negative, that leads you there. If you do, somehow, prove me right or wrong, I’d love to hear about it. 👍

I see time travel as you could go to an alternate timeline and do things that were meant to happen (last of present), but you can't change what has happened. The big hurdle would be finding a close enough timeline and it's position in space considering the universe is expanding and we are rotating a star, rotating a black hole.

The first statement in the video was very interesting to me.. what if that's true, that time travel to the past is possible but it's tied to your cellular state so you can't travel back past the date of your birth because time before that doesn't exist for you, the traveler, without some sort of shielding.

9:42. This is theoretically incorrect as you can see the Big Bang due to light travel. If you have a telescope powerful enough (some people think James Webb’s is good enough for such a task) that can see as far as the universe’s age, you can technically see what the Big Bang looked like thanks to the way light travels. It is possible to see the past, in fact it’s impossible to theoretically see the present due to how light works and how fast neuro transmissions to the brain are.

To see the light from the past, which is still travelling at its current speed, its almost impossible to place a telescope in front of the way of the light. And if we are thinking of doing this, then we need something which is faster then the speed of light to place the telescope at the correct location.

the number one problem is location, we can calculate where the earth will be in the future but we don't have the parameters for how the universe is moving, so going forward in time and staying on earth seems very unlikely. if we were to be able to travel forward it would be to a point unknown, that being said if we were able to travel forwards then micro steps forward may reveal a path we could calculate to bigger steps with the possability of predicting where in relationship to earth

_The best evidence we have that time travel is not possible, and never will be, is that we have not been invaded by hordes of tourists from the future._ -Stephen Hawking Traveling backwards or forwards in time remains science fiction stuff in the 21st century. Scientists say there's no way a person could survive the kind of gravitational pulling and pushing that traveling backwards or forwards requires. Kurt Gödel (born on 28 April 1906, died on 14 January 1978, at 71 years old) lived in the 20th century, not in the 19th century. 💕☮🌎🌌

TIME is fascinating. I worked the subway stations for nearly 10 years. From one end of the city to the other. Every so often I would notice the city would be saying that, "Today just flew by" or "The day was just dragging along." How can an entire city complain about the same TIME paradox unless it was effected by it. Maybe a TIME distorted bubble the earth passes through in its revolution around the sun. Maybe random waves of TIME distortion hitting the earth? Maybe they're randomly given off by the sun. Maybe they're from outside our Terran system and reach us in intervals. ???? There is SO MUCH MORE to TIME than we realize. TI-I-I-IME, is on my side. Yes, it is!

I haven't heard of time distorted bubbles being talked about anywhere yet but idk there could be a possibility? I just think that for the most part, we humans are busy creatures and the same old routines we follow might make this illusion in our heads that time is flying by. I've only heard of disruptions in space-time due to the merging of two black holes until now and those disruptions in the fabric of space and time dont do much to our galaxy. They just contract the space time here by a tinnnnnyyyy bit :/

Thanks again for your great videos. I was wondering if you could explain something for me regarding time dilation. I understand that if an observer, say on earth, was to view a moving traveler in space, the travelers clock would appear to be moving slower than the observers. I know this is a way for the traveler to travel into the future. Knowing that, if the traveler was to move very close to the speed of light, when he returned to earth, he would have aged much less than observer, that would seem to indicate that the observers clock, as viewed by the traveler, would have been moving faster than the travelers. As an example, if I knew that for one second on my clock, you age one day, it would appear to me that your clock would be moving very rapidly, like a high speed picture book. However, I know this is not the case in terms of clocks (both appear to be moving slowly, because, as I understand it, there is no preferred frame of reference). From what I’ve heard, the time dilation effect kicks in due to acceleration and deacceleration. It’s unclear to me as to why this occurs. Can you explain it? Thanks very much.

Perhaps time travel is like space travel. Like airplane travel and automobile travel. Like train travel. Like living inside a house with electricity and plumbing. Like farming. Like writing down your thoughts on the wall of a cave. You don't get to do it until you've earned it. Once you have earned it you'll take it for granted and find it hard to believe people didn't figure it out sooner.

P1) let's imagine we invent a time machine right now and it supposedly can go to the future and past P2) If we can travel to the future that means the future must already exists for us to be able to go there P3) if the future exists then events in that future that are dependent on actions in our present time are happening before we do them P4) effects happening before cause is a breach in causality ------------------------------------------------------ P5/C1) there is no “future” P6) if there is no future then there can be no past P7) for there to be a past means, the point in which the past is being observed from would be the future to that point in the past P8) we now face the same problem as the future in “P4”, where we, a transpired event without the necessary causes taking place first, are now a paradox ------------------------------------------------------ C) there is no past

Time travel cannot exist because time as a constant does not exist. Time is the expansion vector of the universe. In order to travel in time, you need the entire energy of the universe and damn, nice greetings from Heisenberg.

Time is just a way of measuring change. Time exists in the same way that feet exist in measuring distance. We can't un-change anything that has already changed (AKA the "Past") but we can determine the Future by our actions in the Present.

Two points. #1 The only time that actually exists is...the present. Past and future exist in our present mind, imagination......#2 When we speak of time travel we are actually conceiving of us, our physical selves, moving through time.... Ain't gonna happen....ever. We exist only in the present..... Our perceptions can perhaps change but we can never escape the present either to move forward or back. Simple really.

Causal events. I fix trouble for a living. Sometimes, the cause of the trouble is unknown. It’s more efficient to simply “make it work” rather than figure out the causal event that broke it. Now I see that maybe there is no causal event. It just happened.

My idea so I get to name it! Voyager 1 is now in interstellar time or "Mikey's Time." Think of it like Alvin and the chipmunks. "Vyger's" message is fine. It's just sped up now that it's outside our suns time bubble or "Terran Time." It would be faster still if "Vyger" sent a message from beyond the Milky Way's time bubble. (That name is still up for grabs.) Outside the Local Group time bubble, so on and so on until we get to the, "True Interstellar Time Standard." Now that "Vyger" is in interstellar space, it's also in the Milky Way's STANDARD, faster moving, interstellar time or "Mikey's Time." •Our sun's time bubble: "Terran Time" we know and have measured. •Milky Way's time bubble or "Mikey's Time." The rate/flow of TIME outside any influence but within the Milky Way: We just got there and are still figuring. Wild guess I'd say time will increase in speed, now and until Vyger is outside the Ort cloud .007-.07% faster, maybe. Just for reference. •Local Group's time bubble or the rate/flow of time outside of any influence but within the Local Group: Name still open and unknown. Wild guess .08% to a couple seconds faster, maybe. Used just for reference. •Outside any influence in the, "True Interstellar Time Standard," or...;-P Name NOT up for grabs BUT just begging to be measured. The rate/flow of time is fastest here so, surfing time here is choice. Though it's best to have your motor boat. ;-P A minute is a minute in all. It's the rate/flow I'm talking about. Pass it on, please and thank you.

I have ADHD so my mind has the ability to move at a really fast speed and make connections in our mind. This is how time travel is possible. I can see people’s memories of things that happened to them years before my birth. I can only spend a limited amount of time in the present, future or past until I get sucked back like a yo-yo! People have no idea what our brain waves are really capable of so that’s makes us a very primitive species unfortunately!

You are all wondering about the paradox of who is the author of the book, well the book comes from the future and was brought back to the past and was given to the supposed writer of that book where he gets impressed by it and rewrites it and takes it as his own work. Well, there are many possible conditions before I can give an answer to that, first is that there is no author since it is a loop. Next is, the real author of the book is the one who rewrote it and given that he had previous ideas prior to the book's content publication and he now can easily recreate those ideas and turn it into a writing because he now has a guide. Another thing is that the person who brings the book mistakenly gives it away to someone, some authors do not want their real identity to be published and instead they use different names and addresses. Lastly, the real author might already have a draft of the book and chooses to not publish it.

At 3:52 you say that the time for the astronauts slows down and the astronaut will be younger than the other twin on the Earth, but what about the Earths gravity? Doesn't being near a heavy object slows down the passage of the time also? Does it depend on the speed of the object orbiting the Earth? Which effect makes the time slow down more?

It's gravity that has the largest effect. It's just there distance from earth that causes the change in time for them.

I have always thought that if you could travel forwards and backwards through time, paradoxically, the past and the future would cease to exist. If I travel to the past to visit my grandfather, for me it would be a trip to the past but for him it would not be like that. It would be someone who comes from the future to the present. Which of the two would be right? I think both. I think that being able to travel in time, the past, the present and the future would become a whole long line of alternative present. Not thinking in the past and future, but rather in a long present line may be a key to achieving such a feat. Cheers

If you travel back in time you create a new timeline. If you kill your parents. You aren’t born in that timeline. But it doesn’t effect the timeline you came from. If time travel is possible it would difficult, expensive, and tightly controlled. Those who control it don’t want people time hopping around creating timelines willy nilly. If time travel creates a new timeline what would be the purpose bc you could never return to your own. You can’t prevent evil thing from happening in your own. You can only create a timeline. Prevent that evil thing from happening in that timeline. Knowing that timeline will have other evil things that happen.

You could also create objects with the ability to travel into the past, and that would violate the law of conservation of mass. Say I have a coin. I pick up the coin from a tabel and bring it with me into my time machine. I then travel to the past, set the coin down on the table next to the "original" coin and I leave it there. In essence I've just created another coin You'd actually be creating matter from nothing every time you travel to the past. When I travel backwards in time I'm carrying with me the air in my lungs and the air in the machine. When I open the door to my machine some of the air in it would go out, and when I exhale I'm putting particles into the system. Even transporting a single atom to the past would be creating matter.

Aby ludzie się kochali trzeba wyznaczyć drogę. Najpierw powinniśmy się tolerować czyli znośić uciążliwych dla nas ludzi. Jak to się uda to powinniśmy się szanować, a jak to się uda to może się pokochamy. Różnorodność i destrukcja ,jednolitość I rozwój.
