    I found in my studies of Daoism, that the ultimate embodiment of "logic" is that we cannot fully understand the full picture of everything. We will understand more and more, but there will always be an uncertainty as to what is really the truth. But lets take this in another direction. Do we really need to know the secrets of everything? Is it not enough to provide for our own needs, and seek nothing more? This does not preclude the necessity of science in society, we should aim to better understand the universe and ourselves, for the benefit of humankind, and the world we live in. It is ultimately a rabbit hole, but one we should dive down nonetheless.

    I love how humans like to depict themselves as the "all-rounder race" when it comes to leadership, creativity, intelligence, etc, etc. It's pretty naive to think we'd be the median in all categories. More than likely we're outliers in many.

    I prefer Enterprise's version where humanity is defined by curiosity and a desire to make friends. Humanity's strong morals and persistent attempts at benevolence is what made the Federation possible. The Andorians and Vulcans don't trust each other but are willing to bet on humanity.

    @@lovelifeanarchy I thought I recognized the Sentinel carriers from just before that, but I did not recognize the bodies sliding down the ramp. I thought that was from another source. I did rewatch a solid chunk of it to figure out what I recognized it being between, but there was a wide swath that was just StAr Trek or what looked like generic news footage around the part I wondered about.

  • @Jess.Anderson

    @Jess.Anderson

    Actually it IS possible to create matter from energy. We've already done it in particle accelerators, so we know it's possible. The problem is the amount of energy it takes to create one or two particles. According to the Star Trek timeline, humans don't have this technology until the 24th century... so we have another 300 years to figure it out.

    Nature has already created a replicator; the proof of principle already exists. Nature can take raw materials, such as meat and vegetables, and fabricate a human being in nine months. The “miracle” of life is just a large nano factory capable, at the atomic level, or converting one form of matter (sperm, and then food) into living tissue (a fetus, and then a baby). Nanotechnologists aim to use atoms to mimic what nature already does: to rearrange molecules within an object, atom for atom, until one object turns into another. That the task of rearranging molecules into any desired macroscopic object is a massively complex engineering problem which may be centuries away from fully realizing, does not preclude its theoretical possibility. Indeed, we’ve already entered the digital manufacturing age, where coded instructions can be converted directly to large objects (eg 3D printing, additive manufacturing, electron beam melting, even artificial muscles, neurons, and blood vessels in 3D printed biotissues), and we’re just beginning to figure out how to engineer nanomachines to build objects from the ground up. If you can’t conceive of these wonders evolving into full-blown molecular assemblers and replicators centuries down the line, that’s okay, your betters can and will.
