Far beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom in a shadowy existence. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the love he holds for his beautiful protégée Christine Daaé is so strong that even her heart cannot resist.
The musical opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 9 October 1986 with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the leading roles, and there have been dozens of productions worldwide since then. Now in its 35th record-breaking year, The Phantom of the Opera continues to captivate audiences at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End, after more than 11,000 performances.

Undertale Trash I also heard that he wanted to design a Paris Opera House and wasn’t able to, so he made a deal with the architect of this opera house to build an underground lair.
Can we talk about how intense and goosebump inducing it was to see the phantom keep looking back at Christine, as he pulls her through the mirror and leads her down to his lair? It’s like he’s checking to see that she’s still following him, before turning to look our direction with the most satisfied and proud, “she is mine” looking smile/smirk. It’s so brilliantly directed and believable and makes my heart pound so fast that I get almost light headed 🥺😍 can’t stop watching this scene 🥰🥰🥰🎶👏🏻

Fun fact: the living hands holding the candelabras at 0:06 are an homage to Jean Cocteau’s 1946 film Beauty and the Beast. In the film, the hallways of the Beast’s castle are filled with these same living candelabras, moving to light the way for Belle. It’s a beautiful and haunting bit of production design. Obviously, the Phantom and the Beast share the same Parisian interior decorator.

And they both share struggles. Both of them have been rejected because of their appearance and they allowed it to seep into their soul. Both of them ended up seeming either wicked, or insane, when there is actually more underneath. The only difference is that on of them actually is a supernatural being (The Beast) and the other is merely confused for one (The Phantom).

I hate that so many people have hated on this rendition of phantom of the opera; honestly, I find this movie version to be the best of ALL the versions that have ever been made (and I'm including the musicals along with this); to me this showed far more of the humanity that was hidden within the "Phantom" and even made him more of a worthy protagonist than Christine and Raul; a stellar performance by Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum for sure (even though Rossum didn't do many movies/musicals, this was an awesome performance)

I know Gerard Butler always gets critisised for his role, but I don't think you can even think of him as playing the exact same role that Michael Crawford and Colm Wilkinson did in the original production. He is playing a different version of the role with a different tone that is a different take on the phantom. I think when looking at it that way, he does a good job.
@alexandrazisk7091
3 жыл бұрын
I agree. Every person who plays the phantom brings something new. There are better trained singers who've played the role, but I haven't seen so much of an emotional range from an actor playing the phantom then I have with Gerard Butler. People Ramin Karimloo is the best because he's a trained actor and singer, and while Ramin he's my second favorite phantom, Gerard will always be the one who's versions of various phantom songs, particularly music of the night, that I listen to..

@@alexandrazisk7091 Same. There's a raw... depth you get from his Phantom/Erik that you just don't get so much with the others. The rest seem too worried about the technique and difficulty to really get into the emotion of it. Ramin (aside from Lon, obvi, given the medium at the time) is the only one who comes close for me. It takes a lot to connect with such a deeply troubled character.

Very much agreed. I have always preferred this deeper and darker performance. I feel his lower tone adds to the villainy of the character as well, bringing out a malevolence that the stage lacks in casting their higher tenors

Honestly one of the best songs ever to exist.

I think I know why. Some of an artists best work is based upon reality. Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the songs specifically for Sarah Brightman, to fit her voice. They were married for a few years, and when you think about it, they were kind of like the Phantom and Christine in a very loose and general sense, I don’t mean Lloyd Webber was a madman living beneath an opera house. A musical genius, in love with a singer, his inspiration, his own angel of music. I think there's an incredible amount of real passion behind the songs, perhaps this one in particular.
Gerard Butler is and always will be my favorite Phantom. The raw emotion in his voice and the creepy acting... Perfect Phantom, if you ask me! 10/10!!!!
I mean, when you think of it, Phantom took Christine on one hell of a date! He took her on a candlelit walk, on a horse back ride, on a gondola ride, too a musical, and then back to his candlelit house for some more wooing, all in one night! Oh, and he also proposed! That could have been left out perhaps, but still... step up your game, gents!

Say what you want about Gerry's and Emmy's voices individually, but when they sing together, they're AH-MAZING. I can't get over how well they harmonize in this bridge! You can hear both of them clearly, Gerry's older, deeper baritone voice and Emmy's higher, younger soprano voice, but at the same time they manage to create such a beautiful balance between the two, and it sounds incredible! They do it in "Wandering Child" and "Point of No Return" as well, but this is definitely where their harmonization is the strongest.

Years later I come back to this and love the music. Huge fan of Gerry, too, such underated talent and a funny guy. I saw one Broadway DVD and couldn't stomach it. Ends up I like movies not theater
These actors both have added charm to their voices.
I love this song for 1. the different musical instruments makes this so good 2. the singing is so good, Christine and Eric's voices are perfected (to me) by Emmy and Gerard 3. just by the things there, I love the allusions and the magic of this place, and the way the sewer looks and the boat is amazing. It is hard to choose between music of the night, phantom of the opera, and the deleted scene no one would listen, but all of those are amazing!
I love when he helps her get off the horse .I hate when people make fun of it and hate it
The horse in this scene is not in the musical but was a borrowed element from the book wherein Erik uses a horse named Cesar to transport Christine to the underground wharf where they would take a boat to the Phantom's lair.
I absolutely adore this movie and I think the phantom is so handsome
And that's what a 16-octave voice sounds like. Emmy Rossum just nailed the part.

The way she just stares at him while he holds her hand is enchanting
Damn! She can sing
Great song, great actors, great scene, great random horse in the midst of an underground dungeon Seriously why? It can't have been that long of a distance

Im gonna live in paris next to the opera im so excited to see the opera!!!!
I love her as Christie😍
I can’t get over this movie now that I’ve finally watched it 🤩
People say Gerrard Butler's voice isn't good but bro its amazing and i think its better than the ones in the shows
Many other men are great but they are often higher and the deeper growl of Butler keeps him my favorite!
I also love this movie and the 3 main characters of the Phantom of the Opera. They were perfect for this movie and I love their voices. I watch this movie all the time and I never get tired of watching over and over again. I think that it's such a great movie and this one is one of my many favorite movies that I love so much.

i just found out there are people that actually hate on the movie ?! like what ? i think the movie was amazing
It was brilliant that song is always in my head
This is my favorite song from the movie The Phantom Of The Opera.
This is how you kidnap a woman. Appear in her mirror, open a secret passage and lead her down a candle-filled hallway, put her on a horse and then a damn gondola ride as your candelabras and organ rise opposingly in the mist, all while singing an epic duet that is unknowingly forcing her mind to submit to sweet music. ...It also helps if the exposed half of your face looks like Gerard Butler.
WOW! Gerard Butler has a lovely voice!
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
I think of this scene often lol! Forever obsessed!
Gerard Butler is sooo sexy in this movie and his voice is soo good, I absolutley love this movie

He's not even a Phantom!! He's a werewolf with pink eye.
People who criticise Butler or this version in general forget that the film is not just based on the musical, but the musical and film are based on a 19th century French novel. It's a literary adaptation with musical elements. You need character actors for that, not just prolific singers.

I like his voice. Butler is really cool in this movie.
We watched this for our Theater Thursday activity in choir class. This song has such an eerie and dramatic vibe and I love it!

Yes and yes
Love Gerard Butler as the phantom best. Wonder why the filmmakers cut out the extra verse at the end. Must say, I like the original better because of that extra verse.

IndyGirl89 I'm so glad I'm not the only one who caught that. That last verse ties the song so well together

I love this song and its performers!!!! 😍😍😍😍😍
I really like the Phantom movie. I do think it's odd how some lyrics were changed and some verses of songs were left out, but overall it's a pretty faithful adaptation of the amazing musical.
I like how he only uses the horse to climb down a couple flights of stairs then just leaves it there
Gerard Butler’s voice is amazing
There is no equal to this Phantom of the Opera! 🌹

There is Michael Crawford. But he'll never compete against him.
Christine Daaé , so beautiful , pure , mild.
