The Performance by Claire Thomas | The 20 Books of Summer

My first review for the #20BooksOfSummer is THE PERFORMANCE by Claire Thomas. This is a clever examination of the performances we all undertake to "succeed" in our daily lives (and most especially, the performance that women have to undertake). It's also about how these performance leave us feeling not just exhausted, but trapped, coping with a creeping sense of doom while struggling to maintain the requisite good cheer.

Yes, that passage of Summer's you read out was quite memorable and insightful. The anguish of the young. I'm glad I'm not so young anymore. I wish I'd just accepted in my twenties that I needed more time to recharge after being out in the world. Although quite a gregarious and confident person to others, I am in fact an introvert at heart.

What you said about the need to perform and buy the right things just hit me, as I'm currently reading The Every by Dave Eggers and it's so much about buying the right things and doing the right things - all of course decided and chosen by someone else, not yourself - and the public watching, judging and shaming you. Honestly, had to take a break from the book as it had me stressed out so much thinking about how much I perform or rather don't rn as I've become a hermit in the pandemic and forgot how to even be a person. ... I think I need to add The Performance to my wish list!

Yes!!! I'm so glad you read this one first! Your commentary did not disappoint - I agree wholeheartedly - how hard it is to be a person. This book spoke to my heart in ways that I could not put into words...

Oh I am adding this to my summer reads! I loved how you summed up how a lot of us are feeling right now. Everything feels very "extra" right now. Thanks Rick for always speaking the truth

I read The Performance in April for #AussieApril. I really liked it. I only read 3 books in May. The best of these are The Rain Heron by Robbie Arnott The Colony by Audrey Magee ☘️ I’m hoping to read more now in June. I’ve got a #lgbtqia TBR & trying to finish books that have been half read. ☘️👋🍀📕☕️📚📖
