The People's Tank | T-54M3/T-55M3 Modernisation Project

The T-54M3 is a joint Vietnamese-Israeli project which began in 2009 that led to the development of two distinct prototypes with similar characteristics but produced with different budgets. The two vehicles have the same teams behind them. However, in this video, the Israeli T-54M3 and the Vietnamese T-54M3 will be treated as two separate projects.

We used to support Hamas and helped them with weapons, training, and materials until Arafat was assassinated, and we also supported Syria (now we are on a neutral stance with them), Gaddafi's Lybia, Saddam's Iraq too. Also, Israel sent aid and money to anti-regime groups/individuals and various NGOs in our country., which is plagued with neoliberal ideals and sleeper agents that preparing for a color revolution.

The answer is no, and no. They didn't have those, only the original T-54/55s, and they didn't "kick China's butt." They withdrew from border cities, let China's punch hit air, then harassed them while they withdrew. They knew the Chinese never intended to occupy territories, only to damage Vietnamese military in a show of force, to deter the sporadic border attacks on Chinese civilians in the border regions. The problem with internal propaganda is it can lead to disastrous future decisions based on fictionalized past events. Had the Vietnamese actually fought the Chinese head on with tanks, it would have been catastrophic. This balance of power remains true today, in both quality and quantity. No modernization of T-55s can come close to Type-99's specs. Not even Russian T-90s can. It takes T-14, and they're not for sale. What the Vietnamese did instead is an act of both strategic and political genius, the smartest thing they could have done against impossible odds. It should have been celebrated as such, not propagandized into its exact opposite - a head on defense that would have been both dumb and impossible.

@@jerryle379 Of course. The Chinese sending in tank columns into northern Vietnamese jungles at the time was a poor decision bordering on nonsensical, as was the whole idea of "gee, the new incoming administration is still being spunky, we'll show them by overrunning a few border cities that we have no intention of ever holding, and that'll improve relations somehow by showing them who's boss." Good luck intimidating the viet con. This kind of shenanigan was a clear indication Deng was getting senile by then. Meeting the Chinese en force, with the T54/55s the Vietnamese had, would have been even greater lunacy. That's what I was pointing out. Sinking the Chinese into a quagmire would have prevented the quick withdrew that happened almost immediately (Deng's moment of clarity?), and resulted in an even greater catastrophe than our Vietnam War. When it comes to the Vietnam War, what people don't talk about is, most of the causalities in the were Vietnamese, not Americans. Vietnamese children are still being maimed by unexploded cluster bombs/mines, or born without arms or legs to begin with due to residue agent orange. The kind of manpower and sustained munition manufacturing capacity of the Chinese would have burned Vietnam until there's nothing left. The Vietnamese government deserve praise for making the only rational choice considering the situation - by not fighting. This is why whenever some ignorant Vietnamese today try to rewrite history as some kind of "great victory" for Vietnam, they're doing a disservice to their homeland. This is why Vietnam isn't ready for democracy. The mob rule's knee jerk reflex would have led themselves into hell. The authoritarian government currently in charge is wise, and their action rational and measured. Their actions in recent years all reflect the rational self interest for the Vietnamese people - de-escalation of South China Sea claims and slow withdrew, avoiding officially taking sides in America's trade war while benefiting from it (drawing investment from Chinese businesses trying to escape tariff, re-labeling Made in China goods as Made in Vietnam and reselling to us for a profit, etc). What Vietnam need is time to grew its economy, the exact path China took 40 years ago, not seeking conflicts.

The terrain of the border regions north of Vietnam is very mountainous, unlike the open fields of eastern Ukraine. The biggest advantage of modern ATGMs are their engagement ranges, often longer than the reach of tanks. That's not going to work in Vietnam as advanced top attack missiles like the Javelin need a minimum distance to achieved its attack trajectory, while direct attack ATGMs like the TOWs need line of sight. Engaging tanks in ambushes at close range are possible, but not very practical as Vietnam would most likely be the defender in any armed conflict.

At least you sense something. The 30 tons class tank aka T54/55 was proven to be mobile on most of terrain of VN, including hilly and highland, bogland and coast line, so was it supported by the road. The 50 tons class tank like M48 could only operate in a small zone. And so does most of MBT in the world, including chinese. Now there is only a 45 tons class of MBT, that's to say T72/90 family, which is not unoperationable like other MBT, so they bought 2 batallions for checking a real combat capability and standard of modern MBT. Mind you none of so called modern western MBT ever get in their eyes, as they were considered more than useless like nipple on fish. Apparently, operating T90 gave them insight of modern standard MBT and a very big hint to operate modernize T54M as well.

It's a combination of a huge military industry with lower restrictions on weapon exports (The Israeli government uses it as a foreign policy instrument but with less demands than a world-class military or economic powerhouse, plus it makes the companies profitable and stable), vast experience with battle proven upgrade programs for weaponry of various sources, and probably willingness to sell the best available version at a lower price.

@@DingDang3D Point was mostly that Israeli weaponry comes with less strings attached - as a buyer you don't have to align yourself with any particular power or policy and it's geopolitical interests for continued support or take on demands for internal demands\limitations. For many leaders\politicians from smaller nations it's a significant advantage. And yes, obviously, many countries, including Vietnam have their own industries. and every once in a while a smaller, non-major power nation might become a world leader with developing a certain system - like Sweden had the Bofors AA guns and Poland has the Piroun MANPADS.

Vietnam not being able to purchase the most advanced MBT is a direct result of North Vietnam taking over the whole country. Japan, South Korea, West Germany (it used to be West and East Germany), all these countries were in the American sphere of influence. Today they are doing well. It's such a pity because Vietnamese people are great. I've met many Vietnamese in Poland.

Both of us and Americans are already moved on and pretty chill with each other nowadays though politics aside Even we do have interest from the American military industry, since Lockheed Martin actually visited our military exhibition last year and told us that we could buy their F-16s and C130s. Problem is the budget for the military is very tight and we can afford what is essential to the modern battlefield and localize production and upgrades.

PAVN leadership realized that they could not affordably replace the T-54/55 fleet with more potent T-72B3 or even T-90S/SK, at least not with the budget the Ground Forces were split. Therefore, they chose to repurpose the T-54/55s into essentially IFVs, or rather gun platforms and chose to upgrade them to Vietnamese M standards and go along with it. They wanted the best performance (as an gun platform of course) with the most reasonable price tag they could get their hands on. There are some genuinely sound deviations from the plans plotted out by the Israelis, such as the retaining of the 100mm (as opposed to changing it to the 105mm as the Israelis had suggested) simply because they know that even with the 105mm, it couldn't compare to Chinese main battle tanks so might as well have the old 100mm (which the military has an ungodly large amount of ammunition for). As well as retaining the engine on the new T-54M May I ask, what gives you the impression that the genuine upgrades given to the vehicle are fake? And that the PAVNMI has to 'pretend' to upgrade them, despite having the full capability to do so?
