Weird Shilka from North Korea | M1989/M1992 North Korean Self propelled Anti Air Gun

The M1989 is a North Korean self-propelled-anti-aircraft gun, based on the platform of the Shilka but featuring longer-ranged 30mm guns based on the naval AK-230 of Soviet origins.

The statement as a start with the M1985 that it seemingly has no way too target ground target is not true i think. If you look at the Turret there is a rectengular Plate at the front wich seems too be moveable otherwise the gun holders for traveling wouldnt be able too be near the guns, so most likely you just have too fold that armour piece down

Mind, knowledge of North Korean weapons is basically non-existent as the original owners are very careful with information and not all designs have been exported to countries more open to giving away details. Unless you give us a reliable source that the M1985 can bring its guns to the level for ground-target engagement, a proper historian cannot technically claim they can, as that would be supposition. All we know for sure is that M1985 are pretty much always seen with guns elevated, they have no evidence of non-optical guidance, and they were quickly replaced as they do not show up so much in the parades following the M1989's arrival.

@@genericpersonx333 Yeah but just look at the turret of the M1985 at 1:00 min. You can clearly see that the gun holders are not nong enough too reach the guns and it wouldnt make sense making them extentable. Also you can see that the holes for the guns are at an slight angle upwards and making it most likely that they are folded forward a bit so the guns can rest in them while at around 0 degree elevation, plus there is a clearly visible cutout at the front of the turret so it most likly on a hinge so you can put the guns in the resting position. So the guns most likely could face down and attack ground units as long as the guns holder is able too be folded down too alow this. I think this seems plausible if you want too make it pretty cheap and allow the things that you might expect like ground support, i cant bring any sources but it seems logical. (sorry for bad spelling, im from Germany)

@@howaboutastone5069 That is an argument for them going lower, for sure, but what if the gun-holders elevate more? Maybe they are lowered down to get out of the way of the guns, but the guns don't lower below 30 degrees or the edge of the bucket, making them still incapable of engaging most ground targets? I am sure that the guns can go lower, but as I noted, that is only supposition until someone puts up photographs showing they depress more than that, or we have technical data like blue-prints, a training manual describing the range of elevation, and such. That is all I am saying: you want to not make definitive statements unless you can cite good sources, and it is obnoxious hard to get good sources on North Korean stuff.

I just want too make it clear that all of that was my own estemation on how it could be given the scarcety of information.

@@howaboutastone5069 For myself, I was addressing your use of the term "not true," implying that Tank Encyclopedia was being misleading in some way. If you didn't mean to imply that there was a lie being promulgated, then I apologize, but your words did give me cause to think otherwise. I also agree, the M1985 probably can depress its guns much lower, for many of the reasons you state. Would be nice if we could do more than speculate like Janes analysts working off mere photos, but for now, I think we can agree that it probably can.

Very Briefed And Summarized Ideas: I believe that the 30mm caliber is still appropriate for the complex operational environments on the Korean Peninsula mountains terrain and large forest and , but the system needs a radical and comprehensive upgrading and developments programs to suit the developments in the nature and level of threats and hostilities emerging in the theater of operations of the Korean Peninsula... the 30 mm caliber with high-explosive fragmentation ammunition plays a major role in shooting down cruise missiles, and attack and suicide drones flying at low altitudes, these characteristics or qualities are enhanced with operating the rapid firing gun through an advanced multi-channel radar and electro-optical surveillance and targeting systems, while linking them to artificial intelligence technologies will help in reducing the human factors... at the minimum, for example, it is possible to replace the radar system with aesa radar, increasing its range and providing the complex with a long-range, multi-channel electro-optical system with an advanced fire control computer that capable of fusion all the collected datas into advanced targeting and engagement procedure (between the detection range, tracking multiple target's, and classification, prioritizing threat's and then engaging multiple targets at the same time using rapid firing gun and bundles of manpads missile system)... Here, in keeping pace with armored formations and mechanized infantry, the caliber may have begun to decline in its effectiveness against guided munitions with ranges exceeding 4 km, where most modern anti-armor guided missiles launched by helicopters or ground attack aircrafts are outranging the 30 mm rapid fairing gun, Which was still suitable for dealing with Cobra attack aircraft equipped with BGM71 missiles... However, if the platform was automated and thus the number of the crew was reduced (minimizing the human factors), or it was converted into a ground drone operated by artificial intelligence, operated autonomously, it would be still (only partially complementing the more advanced and much capable shorad systems) suitable to keep up with armored and mechanized formations this even within the complex topographic environment on the Korean Peninsula, and even when equipped bundles of manpad systems, because the attack helicopters capable of engaging ground target's from double the ranges of the engagement envelopes of the 30 mm rapid firing guns which is 4km×4km and the man portable air defense systems engagement envelope which is in middle is 5km×5km with the exception of starstreak and rbs70 which both possess advance engagement capabilities against attack helicopters equipped with midern longer range ATGM like agm114 hellfire with 8km range and 9K121Vikhr between 9 and 12 km, but because both manpads systems utilize laser guidance systems although this guidance method provide accurate targeting but on the other hand can't considered all weather systems...

DPRK’s threat is mainly its missile and gun artillery within range of Seoul and other high population density targets south of the dmz. The South Koreans and the US troops in country can do a LOT of damage to the North if they try to invade. Within the time that out-of-country assets could move into strike range of Northern targets, the North would look a lot like the Iraqi “Highway of Death.” The North would be just a target-rich environment. All of that would change instantly if the Red Chinese decide to cross the Yalu again. And it’s completely up for guesswork if nukes start going off. Minor stuff like these anti-aircraft guns are just about meaningless. They are obsolete.
