Welcome back, bookworms! In this video I’ll review The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters, a contemporary novel set in 1920’s England about a forbidden romance between a spinster and her -married- lodger.
Waters, as always, is a master storyteller and this novel is flowing her usual talents. It’s fantastically written, in a style that immerses you in the time period. As always with Waters books, she shows such fluency in the time period down to the little details. The characters are flashes out and relatable (or properly detestable) and the romance both exhilarating and heart breaking. This book is definitely a slow burn, but it’s worth every page and you won’t be able to stop reading it.
