The Path to a Cure for Pancreatitis and Diabetes: Advancing Therapies [WEBINAR]

Ойын-сауық

Many rare diseases like chronic pancreatitis do not have a cure, yet. Mission: Cure and two innovative biotech companies are working to change this and to improve the lives of pancreatitis patients. Path BioAnalytics and Regenerative Medical Solutions are conducting research to discover a new treatment for chronic pancreatitis and one of its major complications, diabetes.
In this webinar, the medical advancements and research for new therapies related to chronic pancreatitis and diabetes were highlighted in the discussion with Linda Martin, entrepreneur and CEO of Mission Cure Capital alongside 3 guest speakers.
John Mellnik, founder and CEO of Path BioAnalytics, is researching to advance treatment for complex diseases like chronic pancreatitis by identifying drugs that will correct the problems in the pancreas caused by the CFTR mutation.
Tony Kolton, business founder and CEO of Regenerative Medical Solutions (RMS), along with RMS’s Chief Scientific Officer, Dena Cohen are working in stem cell developmental research and pancreatic islet biology to find effective therapies for diabetes, even type 3c diabetes.

    my dad died from pancreatic cancer, and i had idiopathic chronic pancreatitis; i didn't have the gene like the docs thought; i had the tpiat procedure at musc. dr. morgan said i had the worst pancreas she has ever seen. this is great because c.p. is an awful disease. i am one year post op and finally pain free. my islet cells are functioning pretty well. i take a low dose long lasting insulin in the morning and that's it.

    Neither of these projects is in clinical trials, unfortunately, but there is the trial of paricalcitol for chronic pancreatitis, a few other studies, and 2 more recurrent acute and chronic pancreatitis therapy trials starting soon. Check our website, mission-cure.org/clinical-trials-and-strategy/our-cure-strategy/pancreatitis-clinical-trials/.

    Our goal is to have an effective treatment for CP in 10 years or less! Spink-1 and other genes are a part of our therapeutic pipeline, and are currently in preclinical research.

    Thanks for your interest, Dawn. The trial has not started yet and we don't know exactly where it will be. We have a page on our website dedicated to publicizing clinical trials for pancreatitis and we will certainly post it there, as well as on our social media. Stay tuned!

    Can these stem cells regenerate the damaged pancreas?

  • @MissionCure

    @MissionCure

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thank you for this great question, David. The theoretical answer is yes, stem cells could be used to regenerate the entire pancreas. Unfortunately, that is beyond the current state of stem cell science. RMS is focused on the challenge of just replacing the beta cells. In the distant future, it might be possible to generate an entire organ, but for now, we are limited to replacing one cell type at a time.

    Was your daughter a carrier of CFTR or did she have CFTR? I am a carrier of CFTR, but don't have CFTR. I have Pancreatitis and am on creon. Within the last two years I lost two brothers to pancreatic cancer! Brothers age were 55 and 57. Way too young to die! Doctors never did figure out the cause of the disease!
