The Participial Phrase and the Gerund Phrase: How to Tell Them Apart
In this lesson, we'll learn about the participial phrase and the gerund phrase. The participial functions as an adjective and the gerund functions as a noun.
Participles and gerunds are types of verbals. A verbal is a verb form that can function as a noun, an adjective, or even an adverb.
Because the participial and the gerund both end in -ing, this causes confusion for many students.
In this video, you'll learn how to distinguish the participial phrase from the gerund phrase.
A short quiz is given.

To avoid the such confusing cases just it should have the different endings for the verbal nouns and adjectives. For example.... move, moving, movement. You always know what is a noun and what is an adjective here.
I was really confused and this helped me a lot, my teacher always gets super hard exams and this video helped me solving what my friends didn't know how to solve THANKS❤️

Hello Lulu, thank you for this video! Super helpful 🙂 I tried a sentence - 'The lady standing over there is my mother.' Am I right in thinking this sentence would be a participle phrase since 'standing' is acting as a postmodifier participle, making 'standing over there' a participle phrase? Thank you for your help!

@@thelearningdepot so the confusion is "realizing he is going to fail the exam Jaden hired a tutor" in this sentence participle phrase "realizing he is going to fail" can also be an adverbial phrase depending on the context? Because here it also sounds like describing the verb "hire". I mean A. why did he hire? B. Realizing he is going to fail. So here it also seems like describing the verb "hire". So would it also work like this depending on the surrounding of the context. ?
How do you find a word definitions without no context clues
Please, I need lesson of transitional adverb
the reward I got was a cute puppy at the end which makes this vedio 10 x times better
Thanks
