Gerunds, Participles, and Infinitives
Today, we’ll actually be talking about gerunds, participles, and infinitives. Now, you’re probably wondering how those are related to the parts of speech, right? Well, for the sake of understanding these concepts, just think of those three as various ways in which the different parts of speech can be used. In other words, the main parts of speech are your tools, and our three topics for today are the projects you need the tools for.

I spent the whole day studying math. "studying" is present participle but isn't "spent" past tense?

I think the word ‘studying’ is being used as an adjective to add information to the noun ‘math’. The word ‘Studying’ is being used as a participle in this sentence. Do not look at ‘studying’ as a verb instead as an adjective. In that case, it has nothing to do with the tense of the sentence.
Isn't determiners a part of speech?
Very pedagogic
I still don’t understand and I have a test tomorrow
Articles are a part of speech too. if not the word, "the," has no place.
The concepts are easy to understand, but the terminology is very confusing. Example: Joan was baking fresh cookies.--------The verb tense is past continuous. Here "baking" should not be called a participle because that would cause it to be easily confused with the 3rd column in the list of irregular verbs. Example: present is "freeze" past is "froze" 3rd column is "frozen" THIS is called a participle, and it is why the -ing form of a verb should not be called a participle.
