Prepositional Phrases as Adjectives and Adverbs
A group of words that may take the place of a part of speech is called a phrase. In an earlier lesson, I explained the seven types of phrases, but in this lesson, I expand on the prepositional phrase.
The prepositional phrase is a multifunctional phrase because depending on its place in the sentence, it can either work as an adjective or as an adverb.
Prepositional phrases may be embedded into larger phrases or even clauses.
There is also a bonus quiz in this lesson so that you may show what you know!

Hey thanks for the lesson. I have a question. In a sentence such as 'I am scared of ghosts' of ghosts is my prep phrase but what is it modifying? Scared, which in this case seems to be an adjective or the verb is? Also, If it is indeed acting as an adverb , what question does it answer - how, when, where, why, in what manner, frequency?

In the sentence - Boris Johnson was finding it hard to win more seats. I understand hard is an object complement adjective. But again what did the to win... modify? And what adverbial question does it answer?
@thelearningdepot

Scared of ghosts is a predicate adjective which follows the linking verb. The prepositional phrase "of ghosts" is the adjective complement.

So how would you call a prepositional phrase that acts as an adjective? Prepositional phrase, adjectival phrase or adjectival prepositional phrase?
@thelearningdepot
Жыл бұрын
An adjectival phrase can be a prepositional phrase but not all prepositional phrases are adjectives, and an adjectival prepositional phrase also functions as an adjective.

Can adverbial phrases answer the question why ??

Yes, adverb phrases typically answer the questions how, where, why or when something was done.
I got the first sentence wrong because I thought that the be verb couldn't be modified!

Wouldn't 5:10 also have an adjective, because majestic is describing eagle? Also thanks for the video!!:D
@heidig8277
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, magestic is an adjective to describe eagle. In this video, she's specifically talking about the prepositional phrase acting as an adverb or adjective. Does that make sense?
I have two questions. First, in the sentence, “ I’ll give you a call in the morning,” how can we know that the prepositional phrase is not modifying you or call? It seems like a rather large jump to have the referent and a prepositional phrase be “ give in the morning.” it seems so much more logical that the prepositional phrase would modify “call.” What am I not understanding here? Also, it does not seem fair that you are dispensing information so freely; consequently, how can we pay you for your services?… are you available as a personal tutor with proper compensation, of course?

Thank you a lot that was very helpful and beneficial, teacher. But I'm very confused about a sentence you've mentioned and I hope you or someone else answers me and relieves me. " over the clouds flew a majestic eagle " where is the subject if we considered "over the clouds"as an adverb. Is it an expletive? That's maybe why you considered it as that because the real subject is " majestic eagle" am I right or wrong pls answer me asap

A majestic eagle is the subject. You could invert the sentence to make sure.

Please clarify my doubt I will watch the movie next Sunday... I think "next Sunday" is a noun phrase...We describe when the action happens with prepositional phrases or adverbs like in the examples "I will watch the movie in the evening"(prepositional phrase) or I will watch the movie tonight(adverb) But how can a noun phrase "next Sunday" describe the time of action...Do noun phrases also function as adverbs sometimes?

Now here comes everything upside down. In other lectures they say always Pre Ph comes right after the word it modifies which here is CALL. In the morning CALL will happen so it modifies this word and not asking any question to get GIVE. Pls madam clear my doubt although CALL will also give ADV PH
@thelearningdepot

Generally true that the PP should come directly after the word it modifies, but in this case, it's modifying the verb. Hope this helps.
