After watching Rabbi Abramson and Yad Veshem videos, I think the "low keyness" of the channel is best. The comment sections of those and other Jewish History channels are 🙄.
Sam, the work you’re doing providing not only top tier educational content but also making it entertaining and a pleasure to watch while learning is a gift to all of us. Thank you for all your immensely hard work, your integrity and your quality scholarship. It’s a pleasure to work with and along side you. With Love, Zevi
I thought that maybe I will give some additional context for the "Orthodox" part in the official name of Berek's unit you can see at 16:44. In original Polish, it's _Starozakonny_ - a traditional Polish synonym for "Jewish" (particularly in the religious sense), which can be literary translated as "of the old order/law", referencing the Christian concept of the "Old Covenant". I think that in time it perhaps become especially associated with Orthodox Judaism but simply "Jewish Lighthorse Regiment" might be a better translation. Maybe one could experiment with some neologisms to create a perfect translation? I'd say that something like "Oldcovenanter Lighthorse Regiment" would sound really badass.

I love how you changed the Gaon's hair color throughout the video as the years progressed. At one point when you mention "The American system" I was, like, oh right! This is after 1776! There's a US now! When are we going to cross the Atlantic and look and Jewish history in the Americas?

15:51 My great-aunt's husband, who studied to become a rabbi, was in the Polish cavalry at the start of WWII.
Wow. I’m not Jewish but polish and this video was very interesting thank you!
Yay! Moses Mendelssohn coming up. I am looking forward to this. The Napoleonic era will be probably interesting too as it implemented emancipation in many places (a little at least). An ancestor of mine, Joseph Naumann (Cohn), apparently became an officer in the Prussian army during the German Wars of Liberation of 1813. He had to drop "Cohn" as a last name in exchange for promotion to lieutenant; at least if I believe what his greatgrandson wrote down in 1919. Anyway, I am intrigued that the Polish Army had Jewish officers 20 years earlier (even so in a very different way and of course the world of 1793 was very different from the world of 1813).
One more thing came to my mind as I was rewatching the video, regarding both the minorities of the PLC serving in the cavalry and the tragic battle of Praga. Alongside the Beardlings, among the defenders of Praga, were the remnants of all six of the Lithuanian Vanguard Regiments (Pułki Straży Przedniej Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego). The majority of their soldiers were the Lipka Tatars. In some sadly poetic way I find it fitting for the last stand of the old Commonwealth. Also, a bit of context for the fact that Polish-Lithuanian officers (in cavalry especially) were almost exclusively nobles is that the nobility of the PLC was significantly more numerous than in other European countries.
Man I’m not even Jewish in this is fucking fascinating history!!
Thank you Sam for an another amazing video. פשוט תענוג לשבת כל שישי בצהריים ולצפות בסרטונים שלך!

Im a Christian and I came here in a search for the roots of antisemitism. I knew of the Pale of Settlement but understood only the most rudimentary aspects of it. While this video gave me much of the history and context I was seeking, my larger takeaway is how bereft most public school world and American history curricula are of key Jewish figures in the history of Europe and the New World--to say nothing of the middle east. I am a school superintendent and I am going to make it a point of emphasis to search out supplemental texts and resources (like this one) that can be included as part of what schools must teach in order to help extirpate antisemitism wherever it may be found. Thanks for the great video!

Due to the lack of European historical information taught in American schools after WW2, it has been for me a curiosity as to the historical background of that region of Russia - the Pale. Some of us know of the Polish revolutionary Kosciuszko who assisted in our American Revolution among other act turned a bend in the Hudson river into Westpoint and knew he went back to help establish an independent Poland. Thank you for filling in a gap in historical understanding of Poland and it's partitioning.
i really admire your scholarship

I've learned more from your channel about Jewish history than I learned in the entire course of my Jewish Studies undergraduate degree. In fairness, I didn't study much history; I studied Jewish law, ethnomusicology, literature, and Hebrew and Yiddish. Everything but history, really. But your videos have shed so much light on our history by providing much needed context. I always felt I was being given the impression that Jews were passive participants in the histories of our various "host nations", with a few notable exceptional individuals - except for a few offhand mentions of the Haskalah and the resettlement of Israel, I never learned much about what was happening within and between communities. I especially never knew the extent to which Jews from different edot were mixing! I knew it happened, but thought it was quite rare. Anyway, your channel is a gift.
Fascinating, I never realized that the Pale of Settlement wasn't arbitrarily drawn, but was former Poland.
You taught me not just the Ashkenazi history, but Polish history as well. Good job
I remember we were taught in the yeshiva that the conflict between hasidim and mithnagdim was much more violent (especially after the Gaon passed away on Sukkot, and the Mithnagdim attacked the hasidim for celebrating his death). Either way, great video!
Even knowing the outcome I was still like, “Oh man the Beardlings are here this is gonna be epic what’re they gonna - …Oh that was over quick…” Haha yet another fantastic video as always, Sam!
@5:39 Ashkinazi communities traditionally wore tephilin just for one of the three daily prayers (shaharith). Other edoth wear them for afternoon prayers as well. And there are communities such as the baladim who wear them all day long as outlined in the Talmuds and Mishneh Torah.
Dude, this is a better summary of the last days of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth than I remember from my Polish high school. :D
The one thing I wanted to know that wasn’t covered is why it is called “the Pale of Settlement,” so I looked it up and it is pretty mundane: “Pale” in English has the it’s roots in Latin “Palus” meaning “stake.” So the “Pale of settlement” was like an enclosure surrounded by stake fence marking the boundaries.
End of Omar was brutal.
Please do a video on daher Al Umar's Jewish associates I think his advisor was a powerful guy from Damascus
As a gentile (Lithuanian) I noticed just one mistake - the Constitution of May 3rd, if anything, strenghtened the monarchy and centralised the state, as previously weak elective monachy was replaced by inherited and more proactive crown.
This quality is too good wtf
great video as always, next video is a recap? will there be more about the rest of the world in your next phew videos (as not the west, were all the Jews there peasants that didn't make an impact)?)

Hey Sam! There is a podcast I think you might like, "A Podcast of Biblical Proportions" from the channel "GoT Academy" on yt. For the most part it is critical biblical analysis, they had an episode not so long ago about how the book of Samson that I think you will like the premise of. And they are also from Tel Aviv Yaffo so you might have seen them by chance at an am pm before.
Minor correction at 9:30. The conquest of the Mamluks happened under Selim I (Suleyman's father), becoming the first Ottoman Caliph. Although the observation of the encouragement of Jewish settlement is true for both rulers. Very useful video, this is mostly an unimportant correction given the video's actual content. Thanks for the great education!
The best simple explanation of what happened to Poland during this period, created by a Jewish-centric channel. Odd in a good way.
Very interesting material. However, one note. The problem of Liberum Veto and the degradation of the political system of the Polish-Lithuanian Union is more complicated than it seems. I'll just point out that Liberum Veto is often confused with Liberum Rumpo. Liberum Veto itself functioned quite well in a situation where politics was in the hands of responsible and educated people, wealthy enough not to be exposed to corruption. After the catastrophe of the mid-seventeenth century, the noble's democracy heavilly degenerated. The repair of political system was disrupted by the agent influence of neighboring powers, corruption and the ambitions of the local magnates. And one more thing. Focusing full attention on the role of Russia in the Partitions of Poland does not allow us to recognize that the Prussia was the greatest beneficiary of Partitions. Btw. Tsarina Catherine II was Prussian origin - princess Sophie von Anhalt-Zerbst
I have always wondered, with regards to the Bukharim, were they at all present in the Pale? Like did any immigrate their, or did the communities stay entirely separate?
@SamAronow
2 жыл бұрын
Bukhara only came under the Russian sphere of influence in 1868, and from that point on it was Ashkenazim who began migrating there. Nobody wanted to move from Bukhara to the Pale.
I hope you talk about the Jewish role in the upcoming Napoleonic wars, and the large Aliyah of Jews to the Holy land Again
13:26 onward, I just couldn't believe my ears. Late 18th century Polish monarch attempting an about-face right into US Constitutional modeled democracy? Nice.
@Artur_M.
2 жыл бұрын
The thing is that Poland had a long republican and 'democratic' tradition. It was a democracy limited to the members of the nobility but that nobility wasn't a 1% or less of the population (which was the norm in most of Europe) but something like 6-8%, all legally equal despite being hugely stratified economically. The Kings were elected and their power was severely limited (the Henrician Articles from 1573 were sort of a proto-constitution). Unfortunately, the system kinda stopped working efficiently in the middle of the 17th century and somehow dragged for over a century without the badly needed reform. Here is a lecture by Prof. Robert Frost trying to briefly explain the peculiarities of the Polish-Lithuanian political culture: kzread.info/dash/bejne/i6t51tajfrHedKg.html As for Stanislaw August Poniatowski, he is a very complicated and controversial figure. The reforms culminating in the Great Sejm and the Constitution of 1791 were hardly his sole doing. In the eyes of many, he shortly afterwards betrayed all this work by not resisting Catherine's invasion in the following year strongly enough, instead rather quickly giving up completely.
What a story!
Is this the origin of the phrase "beyond the pale"?
I'm pretty sure the Ottoman Sultan Selim the Grim conquered the Mamluke Sultanate in 1517. He was the one that conquered Mecca and Medina as a result and was proclaimed the official Caliph of Sunni-Islam.

True. It's normal he mixed them up, tho. There is just 1 year between Selim's Egyptian Campaign and Suleiman's coronation.
It's been an amazing education for Jews and non-Jews alike. I hope to learn more about the rise of Jewish scientists, inventors, and secular Jewish thinkers of the 19th and 20th centuries. So far there has been little mention of the Scientific Revolution, The Age of Reason, and The Enlightenment which dragged the rest of humanity into our modern world. It would also be great to have more bios on the influential half-Jews and quarter-Jews that emerged in Europe and North America.
How about the other Jewish Leaders with Davidic Descent the: Exilarchs. How are they compared to the Hasmoneans & Herodians.
Now I understand why my family was so dysfunctional. I don’t use my real name in KZread, because of trolls. I think of the generational stress that was passed down and the Holocaust, and no wonder my family is so screwed up.

Great episode! I loved learning about people I knew little or nothing about (the Vilna Gaon, Daher Omar) but above all, I'm a huge unabashed fanboy of Tadeusz Kościuszko and I always have waited to hear about Berek Joselewicz on this channel. We actually might hear about him again (I hope). I don't want to spoil anything, but I'm pretty sure that the uniform Berek was depicted wearing in this video is a uniform of the Army of a certain Duchy that was created in 1807. Poland is the Afghanistan of Europe. Except Afghanistan has natural defenses and a potential to be Switzerland. Poland has no natural defenses because they're on the European stepp. Polish defense strategy should be like Prussia or Mongolia. 1. Prussia...preemptive strikes. Not viable long term because the other small neighbors will become weary of you. Eg Modern Israel post 1967, especially Lebanon. 2. Mongolia... be ready to fight a powerful state which comes for you, let them attack 1st then outright defeat them so that none ever dare invade your stepp homeland again. Make your enemy build a war to keep you out. Make sure your powerful neighbors know that without you, they'll have to go to war. Extract Commercial benefits from one you've fought previously (Mongolia-China), Russia/Germany for Poland. Extract Security benefits from the other that you've not fought previously (Mongolia-Russia), US/France for Poland.Don't play both sides.
