The Palace and Majestic Theaters, Bridgeport, CT

The Palace and Majestic Theaters, Bridgeport, CT are in the National Register of Historic Places and yet the buildings are abandoned while other similar ones in state have been renovated. Charles Brilvitch, former town historian, appears in this segment from the weekly TV show "Bridgeport Now" to briefly discuss its history. Many say our local officials do not appreciate the economic benefit of historic preservation.

I bought an unused postcard today in the UK of Main St Bridgeport in the 1920s featuring Poli's Majestic and Palace theaters. Besides the 1920s cars shown, two sets of tramlines run in the middle of the High St.

I saw many a great double feature at this Gorgeous theater back in the late 40's and 50's. Right next door was the Loews Poli Theater, and I remember seeing Elvis live there. All the guys were so jealous of him, the girls went crazy. It is my hope that some historical minded company buys the Majestic and restores it. There is no culture in modern day Bridgeport regretfully.

my mother used to go to the majestic and palace when she was a little girl and movies were a nickle an she had left over for some treats..and to date these buildings now belong to the state of CT and are being saved and they are seeking to restore them. Including their well known but little seen Marquee signs which have been removed from the building and sent off to be restored to thier former glory..

I used to watch Bruce Lee movies right across the street in the 70's and I don't remember those theaters ever being open, but I DO remember the Majestic sign being there ever since I can remember.

Came here after viewing the 'Proper People' KZread publication just posted. Seems like the Majestic & Palace continue to survive. Hope they can be restored like Shea's Theater in Buffalo. It takes community support and plenty of it.

I've known Charles Brilvitch since the 1980s. He was a daily visitor to Seaside Park for many years. He is now somewhere in upper New York state.

Most of what they are showing is the larger, and more beautiful (and in better condition) POLI PALACE THEATER. It is THE PALACE theater that must be the focus of any refurbishing of this historic building. THE SAVOY building in Bridgeport Ct. is a NATIONAL TREASURE! - The only building in the U.S. that has TWO beautiful movie palaces (and the Savoy Hotel) all in one building.

These beautiful theaters would make beautiful concert halls for ballet/opera companies or symphony orchestras. They should be developed into performing arts centers, and it would be great to see that pipe organ restored… that organ deserves to have Bach‘s Toccata and Fugue played on it, I bet that the acoustics are awesome in that beautiful theater!!! I can imagine annual productions of The Nutcracker or Swan Lake being performed on that stage, and I bet that a Steinway or Bosendörfer concert grand would look awesome on that stage!!! I hope that those beautiful theaters are restored and made into performing arts centers…

A small instant in America when movies were very big? What? Movies are still very big. Movies are so ingrained in the worlds culture now they would never disappear. These two places are amazing. I've visited them with a tour from the Bpt police over 20 years ago. They're incredible, the presence, especially of the Poli is beyond words. Thank goodness this complex is protected as a historic place. Maybe not in my lifetime but at some point in time, once Bridgeport moves finally from an industrial city to an information city, they'll live again. Don't destroy history just to replace it with modern boring garbage buildings that don't say anything, have no character and don't last more than 30 years these days.

I’m a Poli. My family still resides in Bridgeport / Fairfield. Every time we drive by the ruins boarded up covered in graffiti my nonna would tell my siblings and I that was built by your family. I still own property in downtown BPT and have watched it slowly come back downtown. I hope they do this architectural masterpiece justice cause my family still haunts the place.

Anybody who can even think.of tearing these buildings down should be kicked in the ass. Bridgeport has torn down anuff of the city's history already.you have anuff empty lots as it is and you haven't built anything on those.when are the people of Bridgeport going to vote somebody in office who really cares about the city.how can this be the largest city in Connecticut looking like this..Stamford and Hartford .Hell even New Haven make Bridgeport look like a dump.the mayor should be ashamed to say he runs Bridgeport. He's not proud of the city because if he was it wouldn't look the way it does. Stop voting criminals in office and maybe the city will start to look like something

Those days are gone forever, Bridgeport has been destroyed, Hiroshima looks better than Bridgeport does. Globalism and crime destroyed this once charming city I called home. Many people have tried to rebuild this city, but, you cannot rebuild something for the sake of rebuilding it. It has to be something that comes from the people that live there, and take a good look at that, therein will be your answer. I assure the majority of the population of Bridgeport today could care less about preserving anything this city once was.

No one wants to come into the dangerous city. There are no safe places in Bpt which is why its the Armpit of New England.
