A labor of love: volunteers power historic Loew's 'Wonder Theatre' in Jersey City

Built as one of the five opulent "Wonder Theatres" in New York City and Jersey City, the Landmark Loew's Jersey Theatre, on Journal Square in Jersey City, went from the height of decadence in 1929 to being slated for demolition in 1987. Against all odds, the historic theater was saved by the persistence of a handful of locals and has been lovingly restored almost entirely by volunteers for over 20 years. Wow....I was born and raised in JC...went to the 3 theaters in Journal square my entire youth...Leows, The State and the Stanley...In 1979 I played hooky from Saint Aloysius and went to see an R rated film called Dawn of the dead… I also went to a triple Planet of the Apes showing with my dad and my brother in the mid seventies...I also saw Tommy there don’t remember the exact year… But anyway I am so happy to see this…thank you.

I think Americans are world champions at letting their heritage crumble. I'm surprised that there are still old high-rise buildings in New York. In Jersey City in particular, many small, typical houses are being torn down and residential towers are being built. Thanks to the volunteers for making it possible to take a look into history, especially for tourists like me

Неужели такой красивый исторический театр, построенный в 1929 году, хотели снести? Хорошо что его спасли волонтёры, местные жители, любители старины.
