There’s a loneliness epidemic in the United States right now. Life in America is so fast paced that people are too focused on their careers and see friends as a distraction. It also does not help the infrastructure of America is not built for social gatherings. With the exception of highly dense populated cities like New York and Chicago, cities were built to be navigated by car. This generation also has cell phones which discourages strangers to start small conversations that can lead to close friendships

Yeah, even people who were born here and never left their city are lonely in the US. This country has converted into one with an antisocial society.

I have relatives in the US, which I visit, and I've also met plenty of Americans when I travel. In my experience, they are very interested in socialising in situ but rarely show any interest in staying in contact or even following up with visits or new adventures afterwards. I'm not sure, maybe culturally many of them don't want to form closer friendships and then the ouliers feel even more lonely?

It's not a just a US thing, seems we are all a little too busy with our own lives. And you are right we're living in the electronics age where there is very little 'face to face' interaction.

It's not lonely out in rural American in the tens of thousands of towns that are 100-3000 people and all feel like a community. 331,000,000 Americans shouldn't be broad brushed into one thought.

Dari, sorry you got sick! Hope your feeling much better! In the winter season I always get what is called " the winter blues." Depression and loneliness. Whenever I feel this way, I call and talk to friend's and family. It's always good to talk to someone. It will pass Dari. Hang in there. Springtime is coming! That white piece of art in the museum reminded me of a broken tooth! 😂 That was the first thing that came to mind. Lol! Happy to see you and wish you good luck with your studies. Wishing you Good Health, Happiness and many blessings.🙏❤😊

There's definitely a lot of loneliness, I have found, especially when you are low on money and starting school in the city. For myself I went to school years and am trying to get back into the swing of things, now getting into my first o2ne bedroom apartment. Definitely a learning experience for sure.

Sorry to hear that you got sick and are dealing with tough times- they will improve! Like many said, it is a lot harder in the winter and things will pick back up in the warmer months like you may have first experienced when you arrived to NYC. Keep your head up and keep pushing, you have a good attitude and will do just fine.

Dari, thank you for another incredible vlog. I hate that you were sick, but glad you are on the mend and feeling better. I also admire and appreciate you being so open on loneliness. I moved to my current city for work and, like you, knew absolutely no one. Loneliness is an epidemic here, especially after Covid, and it's leading to a lot of mental health issues, both here and worldwide. It says a lot about you to address it and share your feelings with us, and as someone who has worked on suicide prevention campaigns, I really am thankful for your bold, genuine self. You're a remarkable woman, Dari. We're all better for having you as a piece of our own lives. 🙏🏻

New York is a fast paced city especially if you're coming from Moscow Russia. I feel like all foreigners will feel homesick but you will get over it soon and realize that US is your second home. I always tell foreign people to travel around US Explorer this diverse country You will love it even more. There's places here that will make it feel like your hometown as far as atmosphere. NYC can be overwhelming but once you get use to the fast paced it will be comfortable

Don’t apologise for being normal. We older people experience these feelings all the time. We are ignored by everyone and regularly told we are a burden on society. Good luck for your studies and keep being your lovely self. I was once told that we forget common things because we only retain about 5 things in our conscious mind at the one time, if another item arrives, such as a phone call or miss a bus, one of those things in our mind is replaced, in this case it was your backpack that was replaced by another thought. I don’t know what the answer is but keeping a list of essentials might help.

I am happy that you are now feeling better. I hope that it will be possible to watch a recording of the lecture that you missed. My son used to be able to watch videos of any missed lectures on line at his university. He sometimes watched them at 1 1/2 speed to save time. I think that you said that you worked every day at the end of last term to keep up. Personally I find that I work better if I do not work on Sundays because I need a day off each week. You could alternatively take Saturdays off instead. I am sure that you will fully understand business analytics by the time that that course ends.

Loneliness is tough it's also quite common. I can tell you it's probably worse here in Los Angeles because it's not centralized. People are not out walking everywhere. There are literally people EVERYWHERE here but unlike New York or even Chicago you're not running into them cause most people are in cars. Also since you might have to travel for social stuff, bars, clubs, events (they aren't often in a central area like NYC) it's easy to just not meet as many people. Even more so if you're older and not in school. Hang in there.

Sorry to hear you've been sick and a bit lonely. Unlike native New Yorkers, you lack the network of family and friends that natives would have. And that's no fault of yours. On top of that you're compelled to focus on your studies. And your studies is where your focus should be. So you lack spare time to network with others--at least outside of the peers in your graduate program. It might be reassuring to remember that this phase in your life is relatively short and will be over soon. It's always difficult sharing challenges in our lives, particularly as we're navigating our way thru them. You find a way to share your challenges with us yet stay optimistic. That's just is one of several things that makes you special!

ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah... deeeep breath... ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 OMG! I'm so sad you had such bad luck and then got sick, but it's just hilarious the way you portrayed it 😅 My apologies, I'm a horrible person 🙈 In times when everything fails (or just SNAFU) you can choose to laugh or cry 🙂🙃 I must say that the thumbnail photo, episode headline and intro was superbly done and presented, LOVE IT 😍🤩 Art is a gift that I have yet to recieve... so I'll take your word for it 🤔 Loneliness is understandably a very unpleasant feeling. As time passes, one day we suddenly realize that we do not have the same kind of priorities and time as we did like when we were kids, teenagers, young adults etc. The important thing is to know, in your hart, that it's not because people, friends and family don't want you in their lives anymore. Some could argue saying something like; Being alone in The Big City and you feel lonely, but being alone in a wooden cabin in the mountains and you feel at peace... 😶‍🌫 My very best wishes for your speedy recovery and looking forward for the next episode

Hi Dari! There are a lot of cold/flu viruses going around right now, January and February are usually the worst of traditional cold and flu season. I’m glad you seemed to bounce back fairly quickly. Please make sure you set aside time to relax and give yourself self care. Many forget that setting aside some “me” time is a very important aspect of discipline. Otherwise someone who goes to the gym often and uses public transport is very likely to get warm out and catch a cold and flu again due to a stressed immune system. Yes, loneliness is a big problem here in the USA because people work too hard and lose personal connections. Take advantage of University campus life and activities. Look for volunteer activities that interest you and maybe help others. Pick a bar or cafe you feel safe and comfortable hanging out at with school friends and try to be a regular at happy hour, as much as once a week, so you can enjoy at least one beverage, beer, wine, or cocktail and share an appetizer with your friends and meet people. As spring comes around, go to the gym less and sign up for a local amateur sports league like Volleyball, tennis, a running club, or a hiking or biking group. Maybe join a martial arts studio. You are young, beautiful, interesting, adventurous, and kind. I am confident that by Spring, you will feel much more connected in NYC than you do now. Like all things, it takes a little time and a little effort. As always, a loyal audience member of your KZread journeys!!! Keep being awesome!

When I was your age (about 40 years ago) I traveled to other countries for work and once in a while it was a bit overwhelming and lonely and I would just end up spending most of my time in my room but maybe it was what I needed, a little regeneration rather than additional challenge.

Privet Dari: Thank you for this video! It has been many months since I have gotten to see you. So much of you I had to catch up on. I am so glad you are here in the US and that you are going to a university. It is spectacular that you get to study abroad. For about 2 years I have been viewing you with great admiration and have found you to be such a positive young woman, you truly are a "Sunny Soul". I know the cold gray of such a huge city can get you down. I am though a "Gray Rain Cloud" and this kind of weather perks me up; excited by the rain. I am sorry you are sad and ill right now. I would make you some borscht. Keep your joy centered, take another step forward & patiently endure...persevere! You ARE a wonderful "light" of which NO shadow cast in your way can stand. You are taking an economics class and an accounting class in winter...OMG!...no wonder you feel depressed...I would too! But I know it is what you need in pursuance of your degree completion. Your brain must want so much sugar (glucose). Eat some Jolly Rancher candy (hard sugar). And since you walk so much eat more Potassium (Banana, Tomato, Orange, Potato). It is great you went to a museum. I always love it when you go to them where ever you are and I would comment to you about them. This museum seems more modern with some old structures in it. Since you are in NYC now will see a play, symphony, ballet or opera now? This is such busy time for you now, hectic. Maybe video conference with Natasha and Elena if able to do. I do miss seeing the three of you together. Eat food high in B vitamin to bring up your mood - fresh pineapple is great. I look forward to viewing from you again soon. Keep up the gym routine and add some more cardio. Please keep smiling. I am really happy and excited for you; even in these struggles your face. You are not alone and the unseen majority of You Tube wish you well. Take care!

So sorry you felt ill for a while but I hope you are much better now. I know there is a fun Columbia video coming soon so I suspect the lonlieness is maybe due to all your friends leaving on holiday and you being alone in a strange massive city. Hope this sad period is very short and we can soon enjoy spending time with fun happy Dari again!

It’s natural to feel that way. You came a long way on your own. Close support is not there. Over time you will find friends, then you will realize your list of friends will reduce to a few because they will be your true friends. But overall you must focus on you, your health, your career, your happiness. Stay focused ,be calm. Don’t sweat the small things.

You are very brave, your eyes are mirror of your soul ... You are beautiful as inside as outside... Such a nice woman in that big gray city, but you are not alone, there will always be some guardian angel for a beauty like you...

I hope you are feeling better soon. Loneliness is transitory and it happens everywhere. It even happens when we are surrounded by loved ones. We should always look out for others who may be experiencing loneliness especially older persons. When we ask them about their lives, it is a great blessing to them, and we feel less lonely, too. Best wishes from Kentucky.

Thanks for the the great video:) Paul Tillich said something very wise about being, or feeling, alone: "Our language has wisely sensed these two sides of man’s being alone. It has created the word “loneliness” to express the pain of being alone. And it has created the word “solitude” to express the glory of being alone." Being alone is an opportunity to get to know ourselves better, and become more of ourselves. Hope you are feeling better. You should be very proud of what you have achieved. I'm proud of you. After seeing your posted pictures from Columbia, this was not the video I was expecting! "It's so cold in NY", and Sanctioned Ivan tells us about the -20C's in Moscow! I think you have become acclimated to our weather here or you have been jelling too long in that warm apartment bed! Hope it was just a cold and not the flu or CoVid (Hell, I've lost count on the number of strains out there on that already)! You left your backpack and took the wrong train. Wow, she is human/normal! 😂😂 So, what do I see hanging there? It's a planet or a universe being build. Its the birth of something as the light bust through its openings and it is all contained/surrounded by a four sided square window, so you can see it from different angles or perspectives! I commend you on the steps that you have taken in your life and along the way, you will encounter loneliness and some unhappiness. Remember, it takes time to grow your roots and establish a foundation. Stay focused on your board (Check). Your hard work will pay off (Check)! Opps!, maybe I should let you you check those off! 😃😃 If your smiling, then I made your day!

I'm so sorry you feel lonely :( I'm an American and lived in France for 2 years so understand. I also wanted to give some advice. Are there student clubs you can join at your university? This is a good way to make friends. Also, do you have any family who wants to visit you for a bit? If so, I recommend travling other parts of the US with them-like Hollywood, Washington, D.C., New Orleans. Also please go home for the Summer break. Also, look for an apartment with roommates who are Russian, or at least European. This could help a lot! Mostly, know that you can just leave university and go home at any time. I hope you start to make authentic, loving connections with people. The LGBTQ+ community is strong in the U.S. so if you are LGBTQ definitely join a club and people will take care of you.

Beautiful commentary, and I felt your pain. When I was younger(30 or 40 years ago) I experienced similar feelings, but thankfully now that I'm older and the bloom is off the rose 🌹,if you get my drift,I couldn't give a heck less about being alone,in fact I love it,and hope you will meet the person of your dreams,or be like me and many others who,to put it in the words of Rhett Butler,"Frankly don't give a hoot!"
