The Origins of Your Favorite Cocktails
Ойын-сауық
Weird History Food is taking you out for a delicious cocktail history date. It’s hard to think of a more popular bar drink on a night out than a cocktail. Some mixed drinks are so well-known, they’ve essentially become household names with their own interesting origin stories.
It’s worth taking a deeper look at the historical tales behind cocktails, and how different cocktails got their names.

Bartender for 10 years. That's a 4 count with no spout. So at at least 6 and a half shots. Makes me goggle every time.

Agree.. 🎉
My favourite cocktail is Sidecar and according to one story it was enjoyed so much by an old French military man of high ranks that he often had to be driven home in the sidecar of his motorcycle.

The only reason I have heard of a Sidecar is that it was referenced in a Gilmore Girls episode. Doing more research on it now.
I imagine that Gimlet ended up that way because most people hear the name and spell it the way they know from a common tool rather than a guy’s name.
A+ video! I am going to have to write these down, how cool is it to know of historically significant drinks!
Fredo: How do you say Banana Daiquiri in Spanish? Michael: Banana Daiquiri.

Some of those names I've been curious myself. Always reminds me of Steelie Dan's "Black Cow." Thanks, WHF, for yet another interesting and well-made video!

thought that was just a root beer type drink and I don't think i've heard it contains any alcohol
Y'all ever try a Miami Vice? It's half a strawberry daiquiri and half a piña colada. It's good. My favorite cocktail will probably be the Moscow Mule, Long Island Iced Tea, or the Bartender's Rootbeer (coffee liqueur, Galliano's, lime juice, club soda, and Coke)

I love Long Island Iced Tea. It was very popular at bars in Canada back in the 90s, not so much anymore.
Happy 4/20🌿 I'll take some coffee with some hazelnut creamer and some Kahlua and Baileys☕🍹
I love this channel, keep it up!!
During the later part of my college years, I often made my self either the White Russian, Black Russian or Irish Coffee after dinner. They are easy to make and delicious! My favorite drinks, however, have to be the Espresso Martini followed by the Long Island Iced Tea.
Hells yea I can't wait for a part 2, as a bar wench I really enjoyed this one!
Love the Long Island Tea and the Moscow Mule. Made both at home and got them down to a T. (Recipes typed up on computer too if I forget) One day I mixed both up back to back and double-fisted them. The contrast of the sweetness of the LIT with the Tart and ginger bite of the Mule is a good combo. (Please drink responsibly!) ;)
Don't mind if I * hic* ... If I * hic *.. If I... What was I doin'? * sip *
I feel like you could do a part 2 for this one
My favorite cocktail? Tequila Sunrise.🍹🌇
"Headache Juice" 😂
This was interesting and fun Thanks 👍🏻
I love all your videos. 😊
A lot of these drinks I’d never even heard of before! 🍸🤔
Is grog a cocktail? That might make matelots everywhere scream however grog is rum, water, lime and sugar(?) It allowed Royal Navy sailors their rum ration without getting smashed.

I can not believe just saw a vine reference in a history video. Maybe the world isn’t too bad after all.
Love seeing Greg from How to Drink in some of the video shots
Thanks for this! 🍹 #WeirdHistoryFood #Drinks #Cocktails
I’m exceedingly partial to the Shandy under its original recipe. Not the lemonade garbage, but the one that is half ale and half ginger beer. As for a more proofy drink, my favorite is the still the old-fashioned.
Not much of a drinker, but as a young man I really enjoyed Irish Car bombs. I think it’s an early 20s thing.

if you have to chug it, then it's not for many. I'd rather take it as a boilermaker instead but not a guinness drinker, so instead an oatmeal stout for me
Salty Dog is one of my favorites
The Americano - I thought that was the name for a shot of espresso coffee with hot water added to it. When US soldiers were in Italy during the war, they found the Italian coffee to be too strong. They weren't used to espresso. They would add hot water to the espresso so it would be more like drip or percolated coffee.
Great to see a Picture of Bundy Ginger Beer.
A lot of omissions here..they didn’t feature some popular and favorite cocktails like the Martini, Cosmopolitan, Mojito, Margarita and the Sours
White Russian is my favorite out of these drinks
I wish I knew the story behind the drink, "Harvey Wall Banger" I know it is gin based drink, but what a name.

It's vodka based, Vodka-Galliano-OJ.
What about the history's most dangerous cocktails or beverages? Poisonous mixtures, weird side effects, the whole shebang
I wanted to hear about my favorite: the cosmopolitan!
My favorite cocktail is a 12 oz cup of Bourbon. I call it a it a "Fluether" because it's an anesthetic knock-out.
11:37 makes sense the family would leave out the clown from their family tree smh
I like a little ginger wine in my beer... does that qualify as a cocktail? 😄

I read a Bartender say that he DOUBLES the price if you order a Cuba Libre for being a snob.

Here's one cocktail that you should do another show on: The Caesar. I already know the origins of this drink because I live in the city it originated from.
I've had a mint julep once and it was different than most but I did like it I've always wanted another

Grand Blue's Oolong Tea. 😂☠️
All this time I've been drinking Cube Libre's without knowing
Limes and citrus juice actually went bad aboard a long voyage so they tried adding, liquor, sugar, and other preservatives to try to increase the longevity of the vitamin C in the juice. Sugar won out, which is how we eventually get the gimlet. Sailors had a lot worse food than straight lime juice so I doubt that is the reason the drink was created.
Hey, careful man, there's a beverage here!
Fun fact: the kraken is just a giant squid. Which absolutely does exist. 😅
Cuba Libre, with angostura bitters. The secret is with Diplomatico Rum form Venezuela.
I used to drink but never gotten a hangover
My favorite cocktail was the Daiquiri😊
Please do The Origins of your Favorite Soft Drinks
Yum
I like a White Russian, but I substitute rum, preferably amber for the vodka. I suppose it's not a White Russian at that point so I have dubbed it the White Jamaican.
>Irish car bomb Ordering that in Ireland is the quickest way to lose a few teeth. Absolutely offensive.
When did restaurants begin?
i'm always disappointed when i get a moscow mule in anything other than a copper mug
i used to drink black opals somewhat regularly back in my 20s, my favorite was at re-bar (rip) in seattle. i can't remember who introduced them to me but long island ice teas were my default drink when i went out so it was probably inevitable that someone would suggest i try a take on the formula, and i'm a sucker for raspberry and/or blackberry liquor so it was a total winner. i went to new york in 2012 and my friend and i spontaneously decided to go to stonewall inn because we're queer af and wanted to pay homage n get trashed like you're supposed to when you go to dive bars. it was slammed, so my pal went to go scope out seats for us and i went to order the drinks: 10 minutes of waiting and the bartender says "what?" and i said "a black opal and a gin and tonic please" and he blinked at me and sputtered "no black opal" and walked away to the other end of the bar. i stood there totally unsure what to do with myself. 5 minutes or so later he came back with the gin and tonic and said "what?" and i, pathetically, whimpered "rum and coke?" and that was that. come to find out, black opals are known by name mostly on the west coast, or more specifically the Portland-Seattle-Vancouver BC region. a year later i asked a bartender in berkeley if they knew what it was and she did and then a few min later told me she was from tacoma... so, yeah. i switched to other drinks after some time, and just before the pandemic i tried one for the first time in a few years and it was absurdly sweet. so, no black opals for me indeed. uhh the end.

re-bar was awesomely a very weird place
Correction: White Russians were very popular in the US at least back to the 1970s and 80s. At least they were amongst myself and many, many friends. Long before the movie.
You know, I wasn't sure about the ladies voice, but I'm pretty sold. She's doing a great job, and even has some of the main gentlemans inflection and cadence.
I like the narrator, nice to have some variation on the channel. Number one cocktail for me, gotta be a Mai Tai, when its done right you can taste everything as the flavor evolves in your mouth, its fantastic.
For the record, White Russians were very popular in the late 70s, especially in winter and around the holidays. 🙂
Rum Punch!
this is the first time the comments arent immediately filled with misogyny when they have the female narrator work lmao i dont mind her at all tho i ofc love the way the guy says "but before we get started" like an old timey salesman
Should be releasing this one at 8pm instead 😂

when i was a boy, my mom and i used to mix all the alcohols together and drink it and call it an 'adios, motherfucker!' because the drinker drinks it and yells 'adios, motherfucker!'

I no longer drink, not that it was an issue, it just lost the appeal. Anyway, there are sooooo many drinks with great names. A favorite of mine is the "Sloe Comfortable Screw"....😅
Pretty sure the copper cup keeps the drink cold...
I thought Cuba libre was created by Cubans living in the US and the name was referring to Cuba free from dictators. My fav drink is mojito, yummy.
U should've put LEAN on this list😂

YEAH NICHOLAS CAGE PYRAMID!
I'm disappointed there wasn't a single mention of any cocktail with Whiskey or Bourbon like the Old Fashion" or anything on Tequila.
@MaliciousLeo
10 ай бұрын
Because the name “cocktail” used to be interchangeable with “old fashion” They were the same back in early early days of “mixing drinks”. An old fashion referred to any whiskey or bourbon mixed with other ingredients. And by default, the only cocktail in the early days were ALL “old fashion” 👍
My faves are Gin and Tonic, Dirty Martini, gin of course! I hate when bartenders assume you want a vodka martini! No vermouth. And margaritas, not blended! I also enjoy a good white Russian.
Hey so, the Irish Car Bomb? We should change that Either that or Ireland gets to invent a cocktail called the 9/11 and we're not allowed to be mad

Why not list the recipe for each drink?
Plz do Checkers and Rally's.

Old Fashioned
My only complaint about the female narrator.. is she sounds quieter on my speakers. Shes not as loud, which can lead to me not really hearing parts without headphones
Where’s the other voice over person?
the big lebowski definitely is why I drink white Russians. Been a stable for me for years.
Piña colada? Margarita? No?? :(
The subtitles bleep out cock n bull but allows cocktail. Ironic and moronic since cock n bull is an actual (or was) business name.
I think she’s great, but I need to know how the DFB narrator got involved with this channel. I never thought these two sides of my KZread interests would overlap like this!
I have never been drunk and I do not drink, low alcohol French Cidre 2% is all I can take pure very rarely. So I know not much about cocktails or drinks
Count Camillo WHO???? 🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨
