    A great lesson, good example, and absolutely something that every fighter should never forget. But, "protect yourself at all times" was being said way back in the 1940's at least. Perhaps even before that. You can see and hear refs saying the exact phrase in numerous archival examples. Mills Lane famously continued saying the phrase before every big fight back in the 80's. It's all good though, Chael P!

    Cheal is right about the rule itself and why it exist, but his story is all wrong. Protect yourself at all times has been a rule in boxing way before 1992. Plus no boxer on the 1992 US Olympic team lost by KO. There were two boxers that lost in the first round of those games from the US Julian Wheeler and Vernon Forest. The boxer that was a lock to win the gold in 1992 was Vernon Forest. Forest was the 1992 junior welterweight champion going into those games and had beat Shane Mosley to get his spot on the US team. But the night before the first round he got food poisoning and lost to Peter Richardson in the first round on points, not KO. Now, in 1984 Evander Holyfield did have a similar situation happen. The ref calls break right as Holyfield is in the middle of throwing a combo as the last punch lands and the ref DQ's him causing him to go home with a Bronze instead of a Gold Metal. I'm sure Cheal probably mixed these two stories up, or he's talking about some other event. But this rule has been on the books longer then these two games I mentioned.

  • @readcastor2977

    @@notatechguy1209 One question. How did Forest lose to Richardson in the first round on points? That makes no sense. The only way to win by points is by finishing the entire fight. So if it ended in Rd 1 then somebody had to either get KO'd or they quit...

  • @notatechguy1209

    @notatechguy1209

    5 жыл бұрын

    @Read Castor, The fight didn't end in round one as I said none of the US fighters were KO'd that year. The final score of the fight was 14 to 8 for Peter Richardson of Great Britain. Forest just had a horrible fight. This was after they went from scoring rounds in the amateurs and you got points only if the judges hit there button at the same time on scoring punches. Scoring was kept like Comubox but the judges had to hit the button at the same time for a punch to count. This change to the scoring system is what allowed for Roy Jones Jr. to be robbed in the 1988 Olympic games.
