The Original Land Raider - Warhammer 40k Space Marines 90s 2nd edition

I was gifted a "land raider" by a generous fan. So I painted it.
I also wrote a song about land raiders, so hang on until the end of the video to experience that.
And Mrs Miniscape may have something to say too.

My friend gave me a damaged original landraider from his unfinished models a few months ago. When I stripped it back I found 2 different chapter paintschemes and decals under the paint. A relic of decades of battles. Now its the sacred relic of my Hospitallers.

It is called a "Land Raider" because that is what half the "Kill Dozer" was called in Matchbox's "Adventure 2,000" toy range. It was featured as the hero vehicle from Judge Dredd: Cursed Earth storyline (2,000AD, progs 2000 AD Progs 61 - 85), which was a cross-company advertising campaign with Matchbox. The paint job really sells the 2nd Ed vibe; and the model is a great reworking of the original. One of my favourite minis released in the past few years is the rescaled Fury Dreadnought available as .stl. The Miniscape Singers really nailed the official Land Raider song.

Came out great. I remember my friends and I looking at pictures of the Land Raider in White Dwarfs and books when we first got into 40K and lamenting that it wasn't something that was available to buy at the time. Back when lascannons were some of the biggest guns in the game, a tank with 4 of them seemed insane.

This took me back to the wilderness years of the Land Raider. Luckily I had 2 from Rogue Trader but we all wanted more. I can remember all the WWI kitbashes (I think one based on the Mother tank did even appear in White Dwarf) and many of us tried to make versions of the one in Epic (our first glimpse of what would eventually come to 40k). But, back in the day, we could go through whole editions without having models to represent what was in the Codex.

Yes, the best battle tonk there ever was. Never had one of these but they were something like £8 entire pounds back then, and they'd published the templates to build your own anyway. I have a 3D printer, yeah, baby, deep gurglie resin, and if i had a mind to, I gots me the skillz to build the box. Might give it a go someday, probably after the doc tells me the liver's shot. On the other hand, there's little point owning one of these if you're not going to play, and I live in Brighton so that's absolutely not an option. Never really got how one raids the land, of course. Sounds like a synonym for 'mud-mugger'. "You there, the big clod with the tufts of brown grass, give us all your money!" I'm looking forward to your song. When I see one of these beauties my brain starts playing 'Renegade Master' by Lardlad Slender, also a resident of this benighted hellhole-on-the-wet. Now, I knew the Lozenge Revenger before I became an engineer and would get irked by such things, but, the twin big-zap is a gentle reminder that in OG Rouge Turnover the big zap needed a turn to recharge, so the idea was these things would alternate over and under each round, making them a wee bit dangerous, although they could fire all four at once should the need arise. I might not be remembering that right but my 1st ed Range Trader is deep in dad's attic and if I extract it, he'll have me take the entire box home with me, and that's an entire box full of 1st and 2nd edition books I have no current use for except to withdraw ye olde trivia from. That includes both Realm of Chaos hardbacks, both signed by Rick Priestly, I am not above gloating. Or bloating. I remain opposed to boating, however. From the Library of the Archives of the Legends of the Scouse Marines... Auricus You never forget it. Lentillian Sir? Auricus The smell of battle. The scent of war. The acid bite of death. Lentillian I think that's the latrines, sir, they've just given them a dose of bleach. Auricus Beyond that, Sergeant, a deeper malodorous stench. Lentillian Right, sir, stench of death. With a subtle hue of pine, sir. Auricus There's no romance in your soul, Sergeant. Lentillian I'd hope not, sir, I'm not fond of the Asteroids Medicawhatsits, sir. Auricus It's a metaphor. Lentillian Sounds like it, sir, probably terminal, sir. Auricus Well, there's no time to waste. This Necron horde is growing in power every minute. Charge up the las-cannons, Bertie, we've got robots to kill. Lentillian Right-oh, boss. They're on medium heat. Of course, they're sorta dead already, aren't they, sir? Auricus Not dead enough. Lentillian Right, right, sir. Only they're robots, aren't they? Robot's aren't alive at all, that's what they told me in Mechanicus school, sir. Auricus These ones are special. Lentillian I'm not complaining, mind you, I'd not bothered what we're shooting at, exactly. Just tell me what colour's on the menu today and I'll burn it away regardless, sir. Auricus Anything glowing green. Lentillian Green glow, yes, sir, easy peasy, lemon squeezy. Spot 'em one point six kilometres off, sir. Auricus These ones are relentless, Bertie. Lentillian Relentless robots, yes, sir. Auricus They don't feel pain, Bertie. They're out there. They can't be bargained with, reasoned with. They don't feel pity, or remorse, or fear, and they absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead. Lentillian That reminds me of something, sir. Auricus Yes, well. Lentillian It's all far above my pay grade, sir. These las-cannons, sir… Auricus What is it, Sergeant? Lentillian They're not charging, sir. Auricus That's a problem. Lentillian I'll just pop out and check the cable's plugged in. Auricus As you like, Sergeant. Greene Ah, sir? Commander, sir? Auricus Yes, corporal? Greene The power block has failed a bit, sir. Auricus Failed… …a bit? Greene Well, there's no power at all, sir, so, it has failed, sir. Sorry, sir. Lentillian Uh, sir, I'm sorry to report on the las-cannons, sir… Auricus Don't tell me… Lentillian They're not entirely attached to the blessed machine, sir. Greene …and the engine's gone, too, sir. Auricus The engine is missing? Greene Yes, sir, even the frame mounting bolts. Auricus Do you mean to tell me that in the last ten minutes we've been parked here, someone has stolen all four laser cannon, AND the entire engine block, from this armoured battle tank, and neither of you noticed? Lentillian And the proximity sensors, sir. Auricus Well, obviously. I checked the Order of Battle, Bertie, we're four hundred kilometres away from the deployment zone for the Liver Birds chapter… Lentillian May I see that sir? Auricus Very well, there you go. Lentillian Ah, that's the problem, sir, if I might be so bold, sir. Auricus Do feel free to enlighten me, Sergeant. Lentillian See, what they've done, sir, I think, is draw a big circle on this map, sir, to confuse you into thinking they were deploying over here, instead of here, where we are, sir. Auricus How can you tell? Lentillian Well, sir, tactical and strategic battle topology documents are produced by the Adeptus Cartorius, and printed on laminated wrinkle-resistant sheeting by embedding ultra-contrast quasi-static molecular dyes, sir… Auricus …yes? Lentillian Well, that bit's written in biro, sir.

Truth be told, I never cared much about the raider of land originally. As someone who got into the hobby like a year ago, and has never been interested in the universe previously, I just saw it as a "lol, big rhino". When I found this channel, however, the land raider song got stuck into my head and I started singing the first few lines to my GF. Eventually, the meme song endeared us to the model and we gifted each other one of the new land raiders, one for my DG and one for my GF's 1000S. We just built them and we are very excited to paint them!

Such a beautiful Land Raider and song!! You are a man of many talents and a musical genius, just another one of your many gifts you keep bestowing upon us unworthy pilgrims! Just like the meaning of your name brother Matthew. The old version Land Raider has always been my favourite Warhammer tank. I like to think of it roller over enemy fortifications, crushing heretic & xeno alike! The popping of skulls & organs, the cracking & shattering of armour & bone, followed by a delightful sloshy & squelchy sound, as it squeezes every last drop of blood & tissue fluid out of it's victims, while thunderously rolling on by without a care in the world. "Simply beautiful!"

It's a mighty machine, and you've done it proud. Like you I never saw one in the shops, just saw them in the occasional battle report, and the ad in the one old White Dwarf that was my first, long before I played the game. Speaking of its resemblance to the old WWI tanks, I remember a White Dwarf where they featured - after the original kit was retired, but before the new one was announced, so I guess it wasn't 'competing' with anything - a kitbash Land Raider based on an actual WWI tank kit. That, the Shampoo Bottle Hover Tank, and the time they put the plans for a plasticard Baneblade in the magazine for folks to scratchbuild by themselves, are kind of my holy trinity of the early 'eh whatever' attitude to the game, before the 'official minis and only official minis' attitude swept everything else away.

I’ve been searching Apple Music for the Land Raider song but can’t seem to find it 😢. Your retro army knocks the socks off all the fancy shmancy Primaris armies with their “pro” paint jobs! I’m off for a brew….😙🎵 land raider, raider of land…

I gotta level with you, Matthew, great video first and foremost, but you have opened Pandora's box here and now the next logical step is to add a tiny speaker to your land raiders that could play that song, and the one with the functional opening front ramp seems like an ideal candidate at least lol Keep up the quality content! Cheers!

@@Miniscape-wh40k I look forward to this now, and I would go so far as to suggest that the tinnier and more distorted the sound you can get out of that theoretical tiny speaker the better.....to maintain a mid-90s sound quality of course

The video started great, then it got better. Following that, it grew better still. The video continued to get better, until a time wherein it was, again - better. Finally, by the time the Land Raider song came about, the video had received so much more betterness that this ol' nob got da best laff he has had all day. Thankyou for your service. Enjoy your trip to sunny Catachan!!!

Great job! one tip: next time you can try to use a thick foil as a core for the flag (you can bend it as you want flag to be) and then plait it or glue the decals/paper - it will be much more natural.

Thank you for this presentation. I have ''liked'' and saved it as a reference for later. I have a couple of old Ebay Mk1's , well 1 1/2 really , that I have big plans for at some point in the far future ,probably around the year 40 K. (I guess I missed my previous 2000AD deadline ) . The better one of the two I intend to do as ''box art'' so I hope you don't mind if I copy your homework. You model really looks nice .

Very cool, such an iconic model. Just as a tip from someone who does both scale models and tabletop: parts like handles, antennas and other thin bits are best replaced with metal way before painting; resin is waaaay to brittle. Handles can be bent from paperclips or similar, while guitar sting or stiff steel wire are good antenna material.

Somewhere .. in a manufactorum, deep within the Imperium, a diligent servitor gathers and packs the requisitioned parts, humming to itself "landraider .. raider of land". Nice addition to your collection, pleased the terminators are excited, who doesn't love a land raider. Great song, much better than those marching dirges of the imperial guard.

Well, that's next year's Eurovision sorted then! A pleasant surprise in my recommendations - thank you.I've always loved the original RT land raider but, like yourself, was (just) too late to purchase one from GW. However, I did manage to score one on ebay a year or so ago for a very reasonable price. I've stripped it down an cleaned it up but can't bring myself to paint it (think drinking vintage wine - once you've popped the cork.....). I was looking to get the Forgeworld Proteus but held out when they announced the Horus Heresy one. Unfortunately, this left me disappointed as the profile was more akin to the 40k land raider than the RT one. This 3d print looks bang on so will definitely check it out (may be the push I need to get the printer!!!) Thanks again 😊
