Space Marine Whirlwind Refurbish and Background Warhammer 40k 90s 2nd edition
Join me as I refurbish and discuss the the Space Marine Whirlwind model kit from the 90s*
*I am aware there was a tutorial in an early white dwarf to build the whirlwind from bits and a base. It's not the focus here.

Brother Tinnitus has since crossed the Rubicon Primaris and been assigned to the gunner seat of the Storm Speeder. We salute you Brother Tinnitus.

He obviously couldn't hear them when they explained all this. So he just nodded along, pretending to have understood what he was signing up for. "Informed Consent" is a poorly respected concept in the Imperium at the best of times. Especially when you're a brainwashed child soldier hyped up on combat drugs.

Brother Tinnitus is my new favourite Space Marine character! Oh, the Whirlwind is cool too.
Such a classic look for Marines. I really loved how 2nd ed Marine tanks like the WW and Razorback had exposed gunners in their turrets. Personally, I think 40k works best when it’s not so realistic or modern in its tech. And to me it sold the notion that Marines feel so secure in their power armour that they’re willing to use it as their main personal defense even when manning combat vehicles.

The Landraider was the first vehicle kit GW made. For a while, all other factions also rode around in Landraiders, even types like Harlequins! The Rhino followed soon after, and there were guides and templates for building Whirlwinds and other variants in WD. Only 2nd saw dedicated kits like these. I love the tlc put into it; not to diminish the efforts of the previous owner, but you really made it shine, dreadnought smokelauncher and all! 😎👍

I made the original mod per White Dwarf, repurposing parts from the Rhino kit, a cavalry base I think and some Weetabix box! Like this one (not my pic): i1223.photobucket.com/albums/dd516/arjenpilon/tanks01.jpg

I'm glad "Heavy" in 10th ed is now "stay stationary to get a bonus". It's probably the most accommodating version of heavy weapons rules in the game's history. It's also nice that Blood Angels aren't _required_ to randomly charge. They just do it because they want to.

Agreed. I am glad now I can have control over my genetically engineered killing machines 🙌
A Leman Russ that i had customized into a looted Ork tank. Still have it and now have a Space Marine Demolisher for my Ork army. I really missed out on playing my era of 40k because I was too awkward and shy to game much, but am enjoying reliving my childhood as well. Just played my first ever 750 point game of 5th edition with my girlfriend. Got minced by her Mawloc and loved every minute of it.

@@Miniscape-wh40k Dropped out just around the time 6th edition released, but that's a shame they were nerfed. It's powerful, but it's great seeing her cackle with glee as it wipes out a squad of ork boys or destroys one of my tanks.
God I always remember the balancing on this thing being a PITA because the metal whirlwind turret was heavy enough that even a slight incline would cause the plastic tank hull to start tilting backwards and then the turret falling off thanks to be being placed right at the back of the tank (I never glued mine on since 'at the time' you could swap in the old metal razorback turret as well because apart from the turrets, the rest of the parts were the same IIRC, this was a long time ago so my memory may not be as good). Edit: Aannnd you mention that problem right at 5:38, that shows me for commenting before watching the full video.

Lead fishing weights were my go to for fixing these problems as a child. Glued them inside vehicles or to the underside of bases to add stability, plus the extra weightiness felt nice.
My first 40k vehicle was the humble rhino, the original one. I built it and proceeded to slap red paint all over it. It looked glorious to my younger self! I wish I still had it.

A familiar story. We all regret losing models methinks.
My first vehicle kit was the MKIII Land Raider. My mother saw how my Ultramarines were always obliterated by my friends Leman Russ and she asked me: "Dont you have any big tanks for your army?". So I showed her the Land Raider and she just bought me one. Its badly painted, but I am still using him today after 23 years.

Remember my first tank was the rogue trader landraider, it had a few repaints during its service only to eventually be destroyed with fire in an attempt to recreate battle damage.

Looking on the plus side for Brother Tinnitus, he's probably immune to Noise Marine weapons now. It's an excellent Whirlwind as I said on the photos, and it's great to hear your history with the model as well. My first ever vehicle was the original Predator but honestly I was too young to really appreciate it - my first 'proper' vehicle as a 40k player was the Land Speeder that came in the 3rd edition box. Even though I don't play loyalist marines anymore I still felt a pang when its retirement was announced, although it was probably a good move from the Land Speeder's point of view, I'd been idly thinking about converting up an Emperor's Children Land Speeder, but didn't think to get one until the news came and they'd all sold out already.

Crazy they have sold out so fast. I thought the market was saturated with them.
I remember that rage rule from third edition! Imperial Observation Officer: Hmmm... I notice that about every sixth time the Blood Angels tank officers might get to shoot their weapons, they just kinda drive forward, I wonder why this is.
My first 40k vehicle was a Leman Russ...I regret giving it away along with 125points of guard

Oddly, my first vehicle was also a 2nd edition Whirlwind, and it was also for my Blood Angel army. I got it for my birthday, and I drew a picture of the tank so my mother could get the right one. I'm sure the name would have been sufficient but young me took no chances...

Love your content, nice mix of nostalgic models and contemporary painting. I still have my original Whirlwind from the 90s. It was my third vehicle, after a plastic Predator and a Dreadnought, and is still painted in its Dark Angels colours. Not nearly as good as your one, but I think everyone can spot the order in which those three were finished by the quality of my paintjobs.

As a true Apostle Matthew, you have brought love & light to this Whirlwind! For brother Tinnitus you are a "Gift of God!" If i were a Space Marine Matthew i would like the fire support from the Whirlwind, raining down a holy fire of vengeance upon the enemy. However i would not want to be accompanied to closely by any armour, as i prefer speed & stealth; I want to get up close to my enemies so i can open them up and bath my holy armour with their blood! Ripping the very heresy out of them and watching the light in their eyes go out is more my thing. If i were a brother of Tinnitus, i would write things down in my spare time for him to read, no brother of mine would live in a world devoid of the verbal glory of the legion. Thank you Matthew for another enjoyable video of nostalgia. Brother Matthew! I like the sound of that, it has a certain ring to it. Perhaps one day brother Matthew we will carve our way through an enemies lines with brother Tinnitus, bringing vengeance and glory through a hail of holy Bolter fire and a screaming screech of Chainswords. But until such times i have dishes to wash & rubbish to put in the bin.😁

Never had one and almost never came up against one in battles in the shop. I think it was a pretty weak option for marines in 2nd ed
One of the very few models I never bought. I loved the look, but the rules for the Whirlwind were always pretty terrible. In the books, they are awesome, in the Dawn of War videogame they could be cartoonishly overpowered, but in the actual game? Eh. They were solidly a waste of points.
