My fav setup is my 6' 6" Uglystik in med with my 1979 Mitchell 300A. Still gets it done. I use baitcasters when I need to cast under obstructions ect but mostly use spinning gear. Cheers!

As an old Southern boy (71) I have been what you would call a "power" fisherman all my life. Heavier line fishing heavy cover, moss, grass, pads, wood, etc. but I Do love topwater Rapala fishing. For that I have used spincast until I finally found the Bantam baitcaster by Shimano! That dates myself, huh? What a reel!! Nevertheless, many more balsam lures out there now and I've been entertaining the notion of upgrading my one Spinning rig. I've been eyeing this combo n that combo and trying to match em up myself without spending an arm and a leg and Nathan Quince, you Sir have really helped me out!! You've told me what you like and why you like it with plenty enough detail that makes sense to this old fisherman and I very much appreciate your experience and willingness to share it! I'll be going with the Shimano Sedona 3000 and a 7' medium action with Fast tip spooled with Hi-viz 15lb braid with a mono leader to keep the balsa lures floating high. Thank you Brother Nathan from your new old friend Johnny! God Bless!

I grew up fishing spinning gear and did so for 40+ years. But I switched to bait finesse in 2022 and it has completely changed my fishing. There are a few situations i might do better with a spinning rod, but I haven’t picked one up in almost 12 months. I enjoy your channel, and appreciate all the great tips.

@@richardkeller6940 Bait finesse is using specialized shallow spool baitcasters to throw lures as light as 1 gram. I use it mainly for trout and bass. There are a few cases where i think spinning is still a better choice: float fishing, deep water / vertical drop shot or jigging most notably. Plenty of videos on my channel about BFS (bait finesse system).

Yeah I've only been fishing for 25 years but I only use a spinning reel due to the fact that although my IQ is above average my ability to retain muscle memory sucks so remembering to feather the spool on a baitcaster is very difficult for me. Whereas remembering to close the bail on a spinning reel is much easier plus I personally don't see the point in using anything other than a spinning reel when my personal best fish was caught on one which was a 10 lb channel catfish.

Get the best spinning gear you can afford. It is supposed to excel at feel, subtlety, and fish fighting ability. I never understood why people spend big bucks on casting and try to go budget on FINESSE gear. I can live with a cheap flipping stick or frog rod, but I'll be damned if I get my heart broken because of a sticky drag on 6lb test.

I have tried a bunch of different makes and models of spinning rods, but the Shimano SLX 7" Medium - Extra Fast is my favorite. This thing fishes like a $200.00 rod. They usually retail for $99.00 but can be found on sale at times for $70.00 to $75.00. I will also share my opinion on a very very good overlooked spinning reel, the Piscifun Carbon X . They retail for around $80.00.

I second the Piscifun Carbon X reels although I suggest the 3000 size. Their models tend to be smaller than others. I own several and have yet to wear one out while walleye fishing in Lake Erie. My other favorite is the Shimano Spirex FG. I don't mind the double handle and got used to it with an older rear-drag Spirex. I just wish they made a 3000 size.

The 8 lb line & Convergence were recently put to the test when a 5 lb largemouth buried itself in vegetation. I just used extreme patience and finally worked the fish free. The medium 1/8 -1/2 rod seems to be ok but I was considering a medium heavy 3/16 - 5/8 so she can use many more lures. Basically I'm looking for an all purpose rod that will not wimp out in heavier lures and large fish situations.

I do 99.9% soft plastic w/lead Jigheads in shore ocean fishing and surf fishing casting. Which is ONE? would you recommend from these 2 - Dobyns Fury Series Spinning Rods: FR 702SF 1/8 - 1/2 oz. Medium Light or FR 703SF 3/16 - 5/8 oz. Medium??? Please help me decide :) Anyone already have either of this rods and used with soft plastics please let me know your feedback.

I'm a Daiwa BG guy Nathan. I had a lot of Shimanos and granted I never spent a $100 on a reel before the BG but, I just found that my Shimanos just didn't last. My last venture with Shimano was a Sahara so, maybe I didn't give Shimano the same chance I gave Daiwa. Maybe the Nasci would be a fair comparison to my BG. Now, you can't drag me away from my BG's. I laugh every time someone is using a 7'3", 7 foot or even a 6'9" rod. I fish from the bank with trees and tight openings and thus have never gone beyond a 6 foot rod. My St Croix 6' Triumphs in Medium suit my bank fishing lifestyle.

what I don't understand is how you can put a 15 lb test braid on a reel rated up to 10 lb test. Is that because it's braided?

If you want one go to the store and buy one! Don’t buy one online at Penn site there site is a joke! You can’t talk to a person after you order one, don’t even leave a voicemail they don’t call back ! If they treat you like this when you order one you can imagine how the warranty works!!!
