Hey man, I really appreciate the video. I’m new to fishing and want a good rod that’s not too expensive - this helps! Plus you just seem like a really nice guy, fun to listen to you talk!

My two main combos are over 20 years old....my smallmouth rod is a Shakespeare Sigma 6'6"" medium action, medium power with a 3000 size spinning reel, spooled with 10lb Rapala line. My largemouth combo is Shimano Jimmy Houston 6'6" with a Shimano JHX 4000 reel, spooled with 14lb Berkeley fireline braid and a 6' 20lb mono leader. I have boated a 48" pike, a 42" musky, and a 7lb largemouth on this combo. My trout/walleye rod is a Shakespeare 6'6" light action Micro Graphite with a 2500 size Shakespeare Dimension spinning reel spooled with 6lb Berkeley Xl Trilene. All these combos were had for sale prices and have held up beautifully. I pay particular care to the reels, keeping them in good shape. The Sigma I bought for $29.00 at a Walmart in Florida, visiting my folks in 1999. The Shimano I bought for $15.00 (yes) , marked down from $70.00 at the Sportsman's Show in Seattle in 1998. The Micro Graphite combo was $50.00 at a Walmart in Wisconsin in 2007. So I have certainly gotten my money's worth. I still love the balance and feel of these rods, and the reels have stood the test of time.

That's what I like to hear. Great stuff buddy, that's good that it's all held up over the years. I always like seeing that. I too have been using my Shimano gear for 17-20 years. Never rebuilt them or anything they are still chugging away.

When I first started fishing here in Ohio last year, I was starting from scratch (I don’t know if you remember the story I told you on IG) my first baitcaster combo was the Black Max paired with a Berkeley Cherrywood 7’ medium heavy. It didn’t come paired up. Just happened to be how I bought them. That cherrywood rod is a solid rod especially for the price

I'm in the boat right now of doing these price point rod n reel challenges. It's fun but informative. I'm mostly doing lower price points since most viewers are kids and most kids don't have $100 for rod n reel combos so the lower price point hits the spot for the viewers. Also everybody knows you don't need $100 rod n reel combo to catch fish. The fish doesn't know the dollar amount of your gear always remember that.

Loooove Black Max Garcia Spinning Reel...but I like the Gx2 Ugo Stik...just always used them so it's a "confidence thing"

What do you think is a budget crank bait rod? I would like a spinning rod. 1/2 oz or 5/6 oz crank baits. But would consider a casting rod.

You should make a new video just like this so it’s more relevant to now. I’m in the hunt for a new spinning combi

I bought a Shakespeare Durango reel 15 years ago and it still works like a champ. All I do is in early spring I tear it down and clean / oil it.

I haven't tore down any of my Shimano reels for over 20 years. They are still running as good as day one. That's what happens when you buy quality brands. They all will work some just better than others and also the maintenance is non existent with higher end units.

@@freshandsaltyjohnny I tear down all my reels once a year and grease / oil them. To include my Shimanos, Diawas, Lew’s and other brands. I’ll I am saying is that price doesn’t always mean durability. I have had Shimanos and other “higher end” brands brake on me but most of my cheap stuff is still going strong.

@@Tightt88 yeah I just go by the motto if it ain't broke don't fix it. It's gotten me by close to 2 decades without ever opening any reels. Also the older Shimano stuff is waaaay better than today's china made Shimano stuff fyi.

@@craigthompson1431 yea Lew's is what most of my stuff is, was just one lots of salt guys were talking about because it was half price. The mach crush is amazing, i have the casting version, but the spinner is all metal. The inshore models are nice as well.

@@craigthompson1431 actually forgot to say earlier, the new custom spin spinning reels they have both regular and inshore look pretty good. The actual American Hero where they donate a percentage is out in that digital camo look now too, though it's more of a cheaper freshwater set up.

Hi YakPak, just started fishing (freshwater) and family brought me the Shakespear Firebird XT 7foot medium for £9.99 or 20 dollars. Is this decent rod to start and which rod would you recommend to advance in freshwater fishing.

I broke one my spinning rods the other day and need a quick replacement grabbed a h20 premier from academy for 29.99 ( fidgured I give it to one my cousins after that day of fishing bing it it was so cheap) but man this thing fishes as good as my 100.00 rod I broke!!. I also just started the 6th sense subscription box omg!! Best box I’ve ever subscribed to!! I actually told them I heard about them from your channel maybe you get sponsored by them. Even though I been using there stuff for a bit!! Lol

Yep I I bought the bg just for saltwater. I heard you can't mix your bg with fresh and saltwater. Can you do a video on what to match with the BG? I still don't have a rod for it yet. However, it has to have a daiwa rod in the choices because I'm O.C.D. lol

I do love those chartreuse ned rig jig heads. I got the $20 black max combo on sale after rebate. It's pretty good but I'm getting the Lew's Xfinity spinning now.

You need to try Diawa XT or Shimano Sedona. they are a lot smoother than my Lews Mach 2 and my Pflueger president XT....A lot smoother!

Justin Davis I know it’s late but hellll no, I’ve used the black max and the cardnal for inshore and they all locked up within a month. Go with shimano or penn

Fluger is also a good brand

I just never could get mine dialed in right. And I had a bad experience with two different ones. But I do understand that sometimes you just get bad gear from the factory, no matter what it is, it’s bound to happen at some point. I love Lews in general though.

Love quantum however in 3 months time dicks learned me buy first name cause the octane combo I bought kept cracking in the backbone. Maybe a bad batch I dont know. How ever dicks did me a solid after the 6th rod that cracked they just gave me a date black by 13.

Off topic which other polarized fishing glass that don’t cost a Fortune maybes 100$. I know you like costas but a bit pricey.

The ones Tactical Bassing had linked in their vid earlier this week are like $60-70 on tackle warehouse. I've actually liked the Strike King and Spiderwire glasses you can find at Wal-Mart for cheap cheap too.

I think what Bass Nazi said below is a good option, also I think Nines Optic are in the sub $100 category and they’re good as well from what all my buddy’s tell me that use them. Clean & clear lenses, multiple styles, etc.

This is just proof that technique is 100x more useful than strength when you're fishing. Josh is 1/5th of their size and out-fishes them. If any of those 3 guys got the technique down they would be beasts.

I have bought 2 of the combos and both broke fighting a redfish I use the ugly stick inshore classic 7’6 mh and it’s been really good

You should name your video (my favorite rod and reel combos under 100 dollars)
