Without Buhl Farm course, I would have never had the opportunity to discover golf. As a working class kid, I taught myself to play at Buhl (or Dumb Dumb, as it's known by locals) with a 5 dollar make shift "set" of clubs that I bought from the local Goodwill. I live in Pittsburgh now, but I still play Buhl everytime I come home to visit family - my all-time favorite golf course!

This brought visions of long days filled with all kinds of matches and contests among the kids who went home tired and to rest ready to do it again the next day. The atmosphere of this club reminds of learning to play in Scotland as a pre-teen in the 1960's. Public Courses were not free but extremely cheap (I still feel guilty paying more than £1 per hole even now; more money than sense). Family groups were in the majority on the weekend and everyone was tolerant of kids with more enthusiasm than ability. After 15 minutes of a 7 year old kid trying to advance his ball, his father would wave the group behind through. Miss that atmosphere.

In 2013 I played a few rounds of golf at the Gate Ranch golf course in Washington, just southwest of Olympia. It was operated by two brothers, Jim and Bill Dunson. After reading an article, I discovered that they have both passed away, and the fate of the free-to-play 9 hole course is unfortunately up in the air. I also found out Mike Rowe did an episode in "Returning the Favor" highlighting this course and its owners. A great watch for anybody into a feel good story and golf.

Grew up 5 minutes away and this was me when school let out for the summer. Any day of the week, there would be about 10 to 20 kids in the age range shown in the last minute of the video. We would form groups and go out, playing just as they were. lol. Additionally, when I was learning to golf here, I didn't know golf rounds were usually 9 or 18 holes. We would usually just walk off after 5 or 6 since it was so close to the parking lot! Still remember the day I found out that all courses were not free.

The two kids at the end reminds me of me and my friend Mark Torres when I was about that age...maybe 10...we would hike to the silver course on the airforce academy, in Colorado Springs and play, I think the 9th hole over and over again until we were kicked off..and when I say hiked...i mean we walked through pine tree infested desert landscape with hills and valleys about 5 miles to play gold...yes, you read that correctly, gold, not golf. It was pure gold to us. Not quite up hills both ways but it might as well have been. I played a set of persimons and a set of walter hagen irons. thinking about getting the same set to see how I would play with them. Such an amazing time for us to play golf, right at the boom when tiger took off. We would hit chip shots in between cars in our neighborhood with bags of golf balls we found behind the fire department. If I were a time machine.
