The Only Car I Have Been Unable To Fix - What Do I think of my Lexus LS400?
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Sumo, my cheap Lexus LS400 came to me with two 'minor' faults... except they turned out not to be as easy to fix as expected. The water leaks were extensive and despite my best efforts I have been unable to fix the backlighting on the cluster! Now it is time to sell, What do I think of this car?

This Lexus without rust is worth £2000. Don't give it away for £1500.

@@Number27 Still very good value Jack. Well done. It deserves a good home. Do you know if this is going to be fully repaired?
The best engineered car you've had and your selling it, pity as they are just brilliant. As for the dash illumination I don't believe it's a big deal to sort it.

Except the 124. You are never going to get a not working cluster on that car for example.
The values are going up for these excellent cars. I really hope the next owner will enjoy it. We loved ours. Still miss it.
I’d still love an LS400 despite the somewhat turbulent ownership you’ve experienced, one of these days I’ll start looking for one.
A mantra of mine has been to consider the potential next owner with every car I have bought, new or used, right down to the colour scheme. This hasn't made them bomb proof but it's certainly stopped me getting stuck with a car and also limit the depreciation on the new ones. An LS400 with 'minor faults' has a very limited pool of potential buyers, unlike your C124 so I think you've done absolutely the right thing as 'your first loss is your best loss' with a car full of electronics and water. Well done.
Turned into a clusterphuck of an adventure.

You beat me to that joke. Well done!
With all water leaks fixed now it should float 👍🏼👍🏿👍
Great learning curve, & time for next adventure Jack!
Love it that you brought back the old school 964 bumper music!!
I remember working at BMW product development when they got a Lexus to see why it was so quite and well built. Lots of head scratching.
You have to remember what market this car was for !!!! the USA we all know American cars are cheap and plastically so they would think this car inside is stunning , as long as they can get there "lardy ass" in the seat and its on some leather , its luxury to them
Sunroof = leaks. I had an IS200, it used to drip from the headliner in heavy rain. As you said, trouble with the tubes.
Nice one on curing the leaks - I genuinely thought you wouldn't be able to!
I do love those ls400 I love the looks I would of had it.
Sumo the Tsunami 1, number 27 zero hehe, sometimes you have to call it a day, great videos as always, thanks.
I hope someone is pleased to give you considerable more. When I buy old second hand cars . . . they now have a comprehensive service. Prefer to have a reliable car that does not break down because of worn out parts that were ignored.
Always 😍 these cars!
The 400 is too big for most people as a daily driver. Oddly overlooked is the later model V6 3 litre GS300. Every bit as luxurious and well built as the LS400 but with more performance, far better handling but looses nothing in ride quality or comfort. Those mid Naughties GS300’s must be the most under rated cars on the planet. Brilliant things.
I know it's a stupid suggestion but have you actually tried the dash dimmer switch? Is that working properly rather then the dash itself? I'm guessing there is one. I had a similar problem on a different car and it turned out the dimmer switch was broken inside so when you turned the dial it did nothing.
@drivelaughing7905
2 жыл бұрын
that is a very good suggestion. if all the dials are working, it sounds more like a lighting issue than a cluster problem.
This Lexus has more leaks than my 1991 Fiat Uno Turbo had...😂

Clever, the way the cluster comes out without dismantling the dash...
No loss of honor in this defeat, Jack. You must be at least 75kg underweight to become a successful sumo wrestler! As always, looking forward to what comes next.
It’s a nice car 🚘🚙🚗👍👍👍👍👍
I think a car with lots of small problems can get you down or defeat you more than a car with one or two bigger problems but Jack that’s a £2k bud, I wouldn’t throw £500 away personally. Upwards and onwards buddy!
So clearly, what’s fun for you is the tinkering and puzzle solving; the rescue, the bringing something back to life. I get it; I can see how that could be a fulfilling hobby. That said, for me, these videos are more an effective ad campaign for “Why You Should Never Buy a Cheap Used Car”. The never ending frustration would just get me depressed.😞
Love Sumo Looks wise far better than the Bismerc for me but I guess it’s all about the driving Sad to see it go
These are normally very robust, but filly understand why you've reached the end of the road with it. Perhaps you should try some others from the Japanese stable, Xedos 9 for instance?
Hardly a defeat - you have done all the difficult jobs that would otherwise put many owners off and whoever buys it will have got a great deal and will know exactly what they are getting, unlike most people who will have to make a judgement based on a brief test drive.
Well Jack, you can now say regarding the Lexus, "been there done that", it's now a lot better vehicle than when you bought it, no more water leaks. The next owner will be getting a good car.
Hello Jack. Have you try pointing diode lights opposite to it? I know its not a great fix but will be better then nothing. Or try putting diode on the back.
Still a hell of a lot of car for a couple of grand
Well done for trying, we all do our best for our cars, but sometimes cost or complexity defeats us, so we either live with it or move on. Hope a new to JACK car fills the space ! But I am sure the Ferrari must be in bits now
Is there a little thumbwheel on the dash that controls the instrument lighting brightness that could have gone faulty due to all the leaks and damp?
@Number27
2 жыл бұрын
Its possible…
That sunroof tube is the same problem I had with my Volvo XC90
Jack how do you insure all your cars? Future video maybe?
What a shame that you had to sell such a great car. Personally I'd have kept it and got rid of the Merc.
I'm not suprised that sunroof hose hardened and shrunk, probably cooked in that roof cavity in the Spanish sun!
Three leaks, blimey it’s like the titanic.Shame to see it go without the working dash 😢
It is possible that the back lighting driver IC (FET) may have seen to many short circuits to be safe and the micro controller knows this so it turns it off.
I think I`d be looking to retrofit LED strips/individual LED`s with a separate ignition fed feed in the instrument pod. What is the light source originally?
OH NO!! This car i liked most of your cars : (

Did you check the harness? Is the signal/voltage for the back illumination present?
Sad to see Sumo go - I have a massive soft spot for these…..but they seem to be fiddly to fix if neglected……having said that, isn’t every ‘modern’ car?

Yep and to be fair the main issues on this car were both caused by the water leak which in turn was caused by an incorrectly fitted windscreen a few years ago. I’m sure the water ingress if what damaged the cluster.
First time viewing channel, and don't know the year or mileage, which are very important. Most Lexus owners in the States have much less trouble with their older luxury cars like Audi and Mercedes, and BMW. Older European luxury cars here sell for peanuts because they are so expensive to repair, but Not Lexus. I assume the same there, but you didn't say.
@Number27

To be fair most of these cars problems were caused by an incorrectly fitted screen some years ago. That in turn let the corner of the screen rust, that let in water and that’s what has damaged the cluster.. but I’d had enough of this one myself! Thanks for watching and a big wave to the 🇺🇸
Sub sumo, or leaking Lexus, lives on, great video Jack, let’s get on with the Ferrari 🏎👍👍.
I'm glad you kept the Bismerc. Changed also my mind with the Lexus, as I always fancied them for being reliable, but yeah, following your videos and maybe due to the bland color combo, it just seems a bit soulless. Anyway, your show and channel is not, so keep up your great work! 👍

@@Number27 actually before I wanted an ls400 my dream was to get Peugeot 205 gti, and I’d come to watch your videos of your old one, an elderly lady has one a street away, I knocked on her door about a year or 2 ago asking if she was willing to sell it, it was her late husbands car and she couldn’t part with it, she was too frail to drive so it just sits there under her garage unregistered. it’s still there to this day and every once and a while I stop and just have a look at it.
Been following you on the Tube so much bad luck on bad cars I should get a different hobby If I were you
A typical, bland, run-of-the-mill Toyota interior of that era. It's not offensive; it could never be offensive. Much of its (admittedly high-quality) switchgear was actually shared with essentially all other Toyota and Lexus vehicles. So, your daughter's Corolla had the same door-pulls, stalks on the steering column, dash buttons, etc. LS400 buyers were clearly fine with that, and its interior _is_ a calm and relaxing space. It grows on you, over time, especially when _nothing_ ever goes wrong. Speaking of which, I am surprised your LS400 had all those water leaks. I'm not aware of these cars having a reputation for leaks, and it makes me wonder under what circumstances yours developed them.
This is a Toyota Crown Majesta rebadged as Lexus. In Toyota vehicles everything is built on the edge so it will last the warranty period if Toyota is lucky. Afterward their vehicles start falling apart. I gained considerable experience with Toyota.

Of all the cars I have owned, our LS400 was the best by a country mile. Sudden and catastrophic hose delamination did for her - the family and I were gutted! I hope you don't come to regret selling, Jack.

Pinned comment/reply noted. I'm sorry that you were unable to fix everything despite best effort from you and others. I certainly understand why it was compared to a high end Toyota - former 1997 Camry V6 owner for 8 years virtually trouble free. I'm desperate for help..... Put it to a vote..... Restore my Rover P5B which has been badly neglected by previous owners and the garage that fails to get it running again..... I can cover the costs and it may be good content for you. If its just the backlights why not fit a few LEDs to backlight the display? (are you sure its the backlights? Can you see the display correctly if you shine a light behind?) Or ask "kzread.infoabout" to look at it...
The fact that you prefer the Mercedes coupe as a daily over the Lexus and a few things you said on your last drive says a lot about the fact that it is a Toyota with a fancy badge. I've had S Class, E Class Mercs and a few Jag XJ's of the era and looked into buying an LS400 a few times, driven them but walked away not having done so. Yes they're quiet and smooth, yes they're well engineered and made, probably better than Mercs and definitely Jags, but when it comes down to wow factor they fall short. You've had your fun, entertained us along the way, but if it's not doing it for you, move on and stick with the far classier Merc .

In the end of the day, the Lexus is kinda boring as a luxury car goes, just seems like a bloated Corolla, not knocking its strong suits, but when compared to the Merc, it's lacking in the charm and style department.
My dad had one of these, and I stole it to drive a girl on an outing, and the dynamo failed on me, dropped quite a bit of money to fix it but the girl eventually became my girlfriend then wife
Sadly from 2030 on all the combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in EU :-( In Germany the Green party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing petrol stations to only one single station per city or county...allmost same story with the USA (califorina banns combustion cars from 2027 on and stops selling fuel and engine oils...)

What a surprise that, yet another, small and perfectly formed English car ( alleged) reviewer has dammed with faint praise a Japanese car ( whilst holding onto European crap boxes, especially a self disassembling, cranky and almost uninhabitable Lotus. The Lexus marque has legendary reliability and livability. Instead of clumsy amateur fidding, a specialist would have sorted the MICROSCOPICALLY MINOR niggles in a day. But, why lose a chance to sneer at an example from a car industry that is now what the British should have remained. Oh well, the old dictum; " Q.What is the perfect English luxury car? A. A Jaguar made by Mazda ( or pick any other Japanese car maker)".

The issues with the lexus are indeed a bit exaggerated. Lots of old cars have waterleaks, easy fix. That gauge cluster isn’t a big deal either.
