Love the business talks. I feel like there’s not enough content about operating a studio, so it can feel a bit isolating at times riding those waves you talked about. Love the videos!

Among my friends in the industry, something like the following is often said: “If you’re good and a jerk, I don’t want to work with you - if you’re just okay and nice, I can work with that - if you’re nice AND good, you’re a friggin’ unicorn!”

A rapport with the people around you is massively important. On several occasions, I have been approached for a job that I'm simply not available for, and like to be in a position where I can recommend someone else... I also like to be one of the people that if someone else is not available, I can have people refer clients to me; if you're an asshole, it simply doesn't work in your favour. In my last hometown, there are three other live sound companies that I know; all of whom I have referred clients to, and all of whom I've had referrals from. On bigger shows, we have pooled our resources and worked together... There's plenty of work out there for all of us, and helping each other out is key in my view.

I love watching your videos. It keeps me inspired. I am a part time mixing and mastering engineer from way back here in the Dallas area....Retooled with a fairly substantial hybrid setup and restarted the side business a few years back as a side gig to my cyber day job. Still struggling to get clients (or even inquiries) like crazy. Backup to a couple of weeks ago, I was laid off from my day job (which supported this music endeavor) and am now really in an "interesting" time in my life. Sigh...... Regardless, I am keeping at it and have established a good working relationship with a couple of song writers that keep me engaged. I just suck a marketing myself apparently. LOL. Thanks for always being positive...been watching you and a patron member from the very start... Please have a wonderful Thanksgiving Jeremy!

Waves are short and there’s always another one behind it… wow, killer quote. And I even say we can learn how to cheer our buddies on while they are on their wave. It’s hard to build that community when there is insecurity about getting and keeping work. But it really is true there is enough with to go around, you just have to cultivate the community to help the work thrive. Killer message bud!!!

Love this. Rising tides and all that. Question for you: I'm currently getting my studio build finished. It's at a point where I could get people in, but there is definitely a lot more work to do. Do I bring people in to a half finished space so I can get some funds to finish or wait until I can save the cash to get the space more finished?

I feel like this could go both ways. I also like to think that there are clients that see you growing and while growing delivering a quality product for them. Then they get to watch you grow and experience what your growth will do for their music! I'm not afraid to bring people into an unfinished studio. I'm literally getting ready to start building out mine so I'm merely a few steps behind you! You will have clients that aren't afraid to work in an unfinished environment!

I got really tripped up by the whole Tax thing. I've started using better accounting software (currently Hnry, which is Australian, so not sure if the US gets it), which puts my tax aside, keeps track of my expenses etc. I was using an excel sheet and just working off a whole heap of assumptions, was a bad time. I had to give up heaps of fun things to get back on top of things, but i'm almost squared away with the ATO (Australian taxation office), who have absolutely no sense of humor when it comes to "trial and error accounting".

Dear Recording Studio Loser, 1st, your channel is amazing and I've been watching it off and on for sometime now and have taken much advice from you and applied it here. 2nd, In an unrelated question to this particular video I once watched a video of yours that was going over a VST plug-in for drums that you thought very highly of. I've been looking thru your vids but can't find it anywhere. Going thru your vids again was a great reminder of how cool your channel is, but if you could take a moment to respond to this question concerning your fave plug-in for drums it would be appreciated,,,,,That is if you remember and still use it. The whole Waves subscription process has made me make a shift away from their business model. Thank you Recording loser! I'm taking notes.
