For everyone who just wants to live from making music as soon as possible: there is also busking. I do it for only one year and I do not yet have to live from it. But I can say that even now 30€ an hour is what I get. So with 1-2 hours a day I would actually already have enough to live. So teaching is not the only option, if you dont immediately "make it".

We are soooo fortunate to have you in the musical community. I think your personality really won me over, right from the start. I love artists that are humble, curious, and generous with their knowledge. THANk YOU NAHRE!

I watch this channel all the time even though I’m a guitar player , This lady apart from great piano skills is just naturally interesting and she is humble and honest, But she also doesn’t ramble on , not a second is wasted on useless info , she really has mastered video creation, it also helps a lot that the camera likes her , being pretty never hurts ,

I love the positive message from this video.i love the honesty. Making money or a living as a professional musician is almost impossible without ambition and the ability to innovate and adapt. You are part of a generation that embraces technology and world trends. There are many musicians who are die hards, stubborn or just stuck. You need to add some other reasons to credit your success. You are naturally charismatic and your level of accomplishment is very high. You have made classical music very interesting - that is just you. Not everyone has this ability. However, at least your message is simple - give it a go. Better than wallowing in self doubt! Encouraging video!

Yes often times creators don’t mention the “soft” skills that can aid in one’s journey. Like you said she is charismatic and has a high level of skill. She has a nice speaking voice and on camera presence. She’s used to performing under pressure so that helps with getting over content creation. It’s easier to say technical things people can follow. It would be hard for someone who is an “attractive” musician to say “ Just be attractive and you will have success. That’s how I made it” It sounds vein but we know musicians that have terrible music but are marketable because of their looks.

What I love most of all is that she prefaced it by saying that not everyone who is competent, has a niche, or even had some success in the past will want to pursue a career or even public hobby in music. It's exactly where I fall after having some success in my late teens and just losing my drive. When money started becoming a factor, all my passion just went out the window. I still enjoy production, but especially sound design and playing piano (my roots) to this day, but I have absolutely no interest in even sharing anything I do anymore. Maybe with time I'll be able to just enjoy sharing small but interesting things again, but it's just not where I've grown to despite people (somehow) finding and buying my music to this day. It always blows me away that people will stumble into and enjoy things I did 6-8 years ago despite 0 activity on said profiles/platforms. I know I ranted a bit, but realizing that you don't *HAVE* to be a professional musician, producer, etc can really open yourself up to new avenues that still enable you to keep all the joy you have from your creative endeavors without any kind of stress that comes from careership/professionalism in the area. It doesn't make you a failed musician, it doesn't mean you gave up, it simply means that you enjoy it all most when it's just you and your instrument. Music is fundamentally meant to be shared, but like a good joke, the drafts & missteps along the way are things people less familiar with it all typically overlook.

They're saying letting it get in your head is a defeatist attitude. Plenty of artists have found success with a completely anonymous persona for their records. Many people find success who aren't conventionally attractive. The evidence to the contrary that, "that's not how the world works" is all around you. You're just focusing on the negative.

The problem is we grew up with the mindset of the yesteryear and in today's world we have lost our mental health. But our sister here really feels for the musician community. Thanks for the inspiring videos..

best way to start my Saturday, on my keys looking through your lessons

I actually used this formula 13 years ago as a photographer and then again 10 years ago as a data analyst/researcher/software engineer. All around a consistent content strategy where I was putting ideas out as posts with a regular cadence until it was inspiring conversations that led to collaboration and future work.

I've also found that a lot of the things I've chased over the years might not really be for me, and now my KZread channel has started growing after I started uploading regularly and I'm having lots of fun with it. So this was a nice video for me!

I am honestly not sure whether establishing a sustainable career as a KZreadr is that much more plannable than becoming a highly demanded performing musician. I often see really well made content that almost nobody watches and I cannot understand what this person does wrong compared to others who have views in the millions. I'm sure consistency, self-marketing, finding an unoccupied niche etc. all play a role. But perhaps there is still a "people watch what people watch" aspect to it for videos like we have "people listen to what people listen to" in music? Some luck factor that is hard to enforce even after all the groundwork is done right. That said, great to see that it works so well for you, well deserved, great, inspiring content!

It's sort of what Gary Vee (and others) have been saying all along: consistently document your journey and gradually, (with consistency and time) like-minded people will become drawn to it.

Great video Nahre on the importance of Social Media as a musician. It is so strange that during my times of studying in my undergrad. and grad. schools, never did I think that video editing would be such a crucial part of releasing music. A producer friend said to me, "If you don't have your music released on KZread, you are invisible.". I hope this starts being taught in music conservatories. I found this humble channel years ago, and as I still support your works until now, you truly got your specific niche in this field, and was successful establishing it to us, your audience. I feel like I've been on the journey with Nahre for the last 4 years, while following my own path in learning about and working with music. One of the things that I have always appreciated about Nahre's work is the feeling that she is talking to you in a very personal, inviting space, and that she really cares that you are watching, and I believe that is because she wants to connect and share her love of music and music education, and all the rest of this is just in support of that effort. Thanks Nahre! You have been and continue to be a great inspiration!

All very good advise, one thing that I have done on a couple of instructional videos that I have made for work is to write out a script. I am terrible at spontaneous speaking, so having thing written out help to keep the flow going, even if I don't end up reading it word for word, it has the path forward so I am not doing the Uhh... Ummm, etc. The other technique that I have noticed that seems to work well for people who have "made it" in KZread, is to perform the task and then come back and narrate over the top.

You are such a gift to all of us. You don't have to go out of your way to show us how you have overcome obstacles or breakdown your formulas for growth/success, but you do, and that is true generosity and kindness. The world needs more people like you. And I would absolutely love to hear all the details of how you practice the Schubert impromptus in excruciating detail, and a lot of us would agree! I like that fact of doing post 2 times a week. I think the idea of post everyday can be intimidating and this would work much better. And I appreciate your perspective on us musicians taking what we can from the social media era

Many creators and KZreadrs would make a whole online course out of this content and sell it for $47, $97, or $457, inflating it with unnecessary details. I wholeheartedly admire your sincerity, straightforwardness, and positive message, and you are just an overall excellent and good human being, and that's on top of your musicianship and educator capabilities. Thank you for this. I needed it so much. I have a studio in Mississippi called The Song Kitchen that's a few months old that specializes in music lessons and recording music. I perform as a one-man-band on weekends and record client's music from top to bottom. I have taken a very long break from posting consistent content. After watching, I think creating regular posts may enhance the quality of my reputation in all my musical jobs so I can grow in the direction I want to go in, have more freedom, and have more time to do what I love most. Great video Nahre as always of course, you're a proof that it is possible. Sadly, I've been struggling with being criminally underappreciated both as a pianist and music educator on the local level (=real life) . It's demoralizing seeing less qualified people always jump the queue to land the gig or job before me due to having connections - Although I have much more to show for in terms of my CV , Portfolio and actual value / technical ability I put on the table. I've been sending hundreds of letters to different countries abroad with no success. I've been working day and night to perfect my craft, improve and increase my knowledge. I've been advertizing myself on social media and trying to reach out to people but none of them is too serious. Feels bad seeing people doing a job I could do much better... yet not seem to land one myself. It's a bit negative I know, because on a rare happy occasion I do get a gig or a lecture booked and it's successful when it does happen. But still, I'm unlucky when it comes to where I live when it comes to sheer opportunity thus I'm working on relocating and praying for a good fortune to meet the right people who'd unlock my actual potential to give the best value to other people doing what I do best.

CV's don't mean anything because people lie on them and/or it's hard to validate information on them. It's much safer to hire someone you know who does the job well and you know. Also, CV's don't tell anything about personal traits: You can hire someone with a great CV and they are annoying, hard to comunicate, etc.

@@gustavoturm I couldn't disagree more. If you don't showcase what you do and just write a few words on your CV than yes you are correct. But if you do have much to show for in terms of presentations e.g images, videos, SIGNED documents, things you've done and developed and recommendations from past workplaces (and I have all of those and more) then it does tell an employer that they are now considering a serious hard working candidate for an interview. For the second part you are right, but that's moot because every employer takes a leap of faith when hiring a new guy. Good CV + Portfolio and impressions from past workplaces just mean the likelihood of that guy you hire being annoying, value-less or any other negative trait are lower. There's a reason why the system works, it's the wisdom of past generations.

I'm a photographer so not the original target audience. However, I relate to your approach in music, we just have different material, yours is the sound and mine is the light. I would like to add that the reason you were able to build an audience is not only because you're a skillful musician and educator but also because really early on your channel you developped your own style of youtube filmmaking (if it makes any sense) which is quite unique.

One thing I think is important, and I say this because I have basically grown up on KZread/social media and seen this happen to some of my favorite creators, is that one day the things that worked for you now, will probably not work in the future so having the mindset of adapting and being able to shift your workflow to something that the current environment works with, should be accounted for. Although I hate it, short sub-one-minute content is the current trend, but it makes the longer form content from someone like yourself, more special when it comes out. Thank you for giving us your side of the process and I genuinely look forward to all the videos that you put out.

Valentina Lisitsa revived her career after a brilliant start that flagged. She decided to start videoing everything she played, major works (with no editing), recording sessions, etc. Claudia Montero liked to improvise, and she started making videos of her personal sessions. She often improvises in her concerts. I am going to ask her if she has heard your composer variations, which I like very much. You are a special talent and I hope you continue what you're doing.

I love your videos. I think I saw them all. I loved the one you played the piano with your mother. I loved the way your eyes sparked when visiting the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. Your compositions have a unique style, as your harmony understanding is very sophisticated.

Congratulations on finding your way! Honestly, the very thought of creating social media content makes me sick, which is why I rarely do more than post about upcoming concerts. Maybe I'm getting old, but my successful way to maintain my career as a musician is to socialise in real life, be a good hang around fellow musicians, do favours, always respond quickly to requests and be reliable. Accept that it is okay to not be perfect and that you're on a journey which everyone else also started not knowing sh*t about what and how to do. Follow your heart, trust your guts and choose friendship over money. That's what I learned. I know I still don't know...

Yes she is great as a pianist. I enjoy her channel a lot. The issue I have with Music these days there is none. It's not like the 60,70 and 80 when people made music and played real instruments. Now a days people just take pre played samples put them together and say they are a musician. Now I have had discussions with people and they tell me that they have skill to do this, TO me it's not a skill if you use someone else pre played samples. To me it's called cheating.

I think my first introduction to you was the "Warm up exercises that are fun to play". Consistency is definitely KEY! Its been great to follow your journey these past 5 years. I remember stumbling upon your piano practice videos during my time in uni.

Been a while since i've checked out this channel. Although you may already know the name, but just making sure more people find out about Dorothy Donegan. Thanks to the algo- i found out about this pleasant soul. Have a great one and keep it up! This channel has grown immensely!

As a fellow classical pianist, I’m with you 100%. You almost have to carve your own path because the traditional conservative way is NOT for anyone. Thankfully the internet helps.

As a music teacher, this is the last video I'd show to a student. All those hours you spend around making a video you can read stuff, listen, talk to other musicians, because this is an infinite art which requires all efforts and time in life. Maybe in your musician life you will need other jobs in order to actually be a musician; but this is not an injustice, that's life, and is also good to learn. I'm glad you found your purpose by creating content, but I'm sure there are so many looking for other ways of success or joy. This comment is not for the creator, but for those who are lost and this video didn't solve a thing.

i think she made it pretty clear that she's only speaking about what worked for her. she explicitly said that this way of life, artistry, and motivation is not for everyone. i wouldn't do this personally as someone who isn't seeking a career in music, but i'm really grateful she does post content & personally benefit from it :)

The voice over post processing is the magic I would love insight into. The best voice over quality I have heard here on KZread in a long time.

Your visual demonstration with the marbles is very clever. It also points out that one marble (or video, let's say) isn't enough. Unless you do something super-cool which goes viral. But barring that, it takes multiple videos to catch people's attention. And maybe they like one but not all, so you need variety (note the different colors of the marbles).

The simple habit? Clickbait.

These are all good solid points. I would underline CONSISTENCY. Let's say one posts something once a month. that's fine - but do it reliably. If it's once every two weeks, fine - just do it reliably, say, every other Saturday, or every other Monday - whatever - just make sure it's predictable, reliable, so people know when to look for it and can incorporate its presentation into their own schedule. I remember watching a similar video only for a VERY different channel - Regular Car Reviews. There, the host, Brian, explained how the channel happened. He was at a crossroads - fresh out of grad school in English Lit. On unemployment. Feeling frustrated and Not Happy. He talked to his friend, Roman, about this, and Roman asked "What have you done lately that you could see yourself doing more of, that would be fun and worthwhile?" Brian answered that he thought the "Car Review" he did for his dad's old Chrysler minivan was a blast, and would love to do more. So Roman basically said, "OK, fine. I will help, but you have to treat it like a job. Crank out a video on a schedule. Keep doing it." And that's what they did - every two weeks they came up with a ridiculously funny video about some horrible car. After a few months, they did a review of his neighbour's ratty old RX7. Then an editor from Car and Driver tweeted the link to the video saying it's the funniest thing he'd seen in some time. The RX7 video suddenly got millions of views. Brian and Roman increased production to Every Monday Morning and they now have 876k subscribers and are making a living doing something fun. The bottom line is CONSISTENCY. If they hadn't been persistent, reliable, and consistent in their quality and timed output, they would not be where they are today. I've been following Nahre Sol here for several years, and she's a great example of this. I will be showing this video to students.

So your connection at Juilliard had nothing to do with it or the fact that you could afford Juliard therefore you are financially secure... Please don't insult our intelligence!

@@henryhill92 maybe, but conservatories like Juilliard have really good connections. BTW, judging from her equipment and instruments, she's either putting herself in even more dept or she can afford it all. Anyhow, the title is very deceiving...

⁠​⁠@@userAAit can absolutely pay for that, and far more. she averages 100-200k views every video (with some getting much more) and posts often. her cpm would be quite high for this type of channel, so that’s easily $1-2k per 100 thousand views (she has 42 million). not to mention, she has a sponsorship on pretty much every video, and I haven’t even mentioned other social media platforms.

I'm glad you've found an audience and process that is enjoyable. My concern with the *constant engagement* of social media is that it’s destroying the mystical sensation of being immersed in music without the incessant focus on process. Being an artist used to be high calling, to be a purveyor of soul and beauty…now it’s basically the equivalent of a becoming a fine chef only to make a living by supplying chicken nuggets to the kitchen staff. Or it’s like we’re all in “the choir”, focused on making *content* for the other choir members, instead of a 100% focus on bringing prosperity to all humankind through the infinite power of artistic expression, which requires *EVERY OUNCE* of artists’ focus and attention. There aren’t enough years in life to make the kind of art that needs to be made at this time to help save the world…without having to churn out content every week. How do we fix this?

I didn’t expect to see such a great guide to a career of “content creation” from a classical music channel before any other field like comedy or podcasting. You’re my favorite musician.

Nahre, I think it's very obvious to everyone but it still needs to be said: not only you are a formidable artist and teacher, but your video editing skills are truly amazing. I especially love it when you add your hand drawings and animations. They are beautiful.

What attracted me to your site is the high degree of musicianship/compositional skills that you have. In particular, your happy birthday song in the various classical styles. That range from the sublime to the near ridiculous did it for me. I can't speak about what others see in you. All I can say is that combination cinched it for me. I heard some of your original music, but I was most impressed with your mind for understanding arrangements. The way you see musical patterns that can be shifted around to produce new pieces is amazing. I know you have played classical pieces for a long time and have integrated a lot of the music into your understanding. For me, music has a very mysterious source. If you mix music with commercial success or popularity the gods/muses might not be happy. We don't know why they have given certain people gifts. Try not to mix money with music too much. If you want money that is altogether another god you are dealing with. From my experience music, like virtue, is its own gift. Good luck with the music and the site.

I think it's really cool that the traditional classical career is no longer the only way to inspire people to explore classical music. I started piano very late, at 22, but I've been playing for ages now and would love to create content for other pianists who have discovered the instrument later in life.
