The 1976 classic "The Omen" is one of my favourite horror movies, and as with everything good it's bound to get remade at some point. That very thing happened in 2006, with a "brand new" take on the original film that was so close to the first that the guy who wrote the screenplay was denied a writing credit!

Pointless is exactly the right word for this remake. The actual point of it was so they could release it on 06/06/06. Actually saw it on opening day just to be able to say I saw it on 06/06/06. Like you say, the only differences are of inconsequential things. Yes, it does have a pretty good cast, but the best performances only match the performances in the original; no one is better. Liev Schreiber is a fine actor, but he's no Gregory Peck! It's not that it's bad, it's just that we didn't need it. You could say the same thing about Gus Van Sant's Psycho.

The only neat thing in this remake was having Mia Farrow from Rosemary s Baby playing Mrs. Balock. I wish they had done more with that. Decent cast in a pointless remake. Did everything the same but somehow way worse.

I get where you’re coming from but personally solely because of my age I am pro this remake because it came out when I was ten so it was a great way to open me up to horror as a genre in general. It wasn’t too gory the story was good (because it’s a remake) and the special effects were up to par with what I was used to seeing at that age. It isn’t one I go back and watch but for the time it was good for the younger generation to learn about the entire series and get to watch all the original movies ❤ This is the only reason I’m pro remakes. I don’t need to enjoy the remakes today but it’s a great way to start a conversation with younger generations and be able to show them all the originals ❤

Remakes hardly ever work. There have been a couple of exceptions (The Evil Dead, Funny Games) but most are usually just utter crap and totally pointless - Carrie, Psycho, Children Of The Corn, Nightmare On Elm Street, Rosemary's Baby and MANY others! We can put The Omen into that list too! A remake for me should do it's OWN thing. That's why I appreciated Rob Zombie's Halloween. Hopefully the prequel will be good?!

Since then I've watched a few of your other videos, including all the other Omen videos, and the Exorcist ones too. Figured fitting that my first comment to you be on one of your Omen videos. 😉 This is one of those remakes that obviously happened because the studio looked, saw the date 06/06/06 was coming up, decided they needed to do something Omen related, but was too lazy to do something new. Anyways, enjoying your videos, thank you, and keep up the good work.

Mostly agree with you. Some very minor changes I like better in the remake - As amazing as the original Mrs Baylock was, I could tell she was evil the second she was introduced and I felt the Thorn’s were too easily conned as the way she was hired was suspect, while remake Mrs Baylock sold herself as the perfect nanny before they hired her. I also liked that Jennings uses a digital camera as well as a film camera, great way of showing the omens are showing in any picture no matter the format used.

I'm your hypothetical moviegoer who never saw any of the original Omen films, but did see the remake back then! I think it was Julia Styles that made me want to see it at all, since I loved her in Save the Last Dance. It's been a long time since then (obviously), but I remember thinking the concept was really, really neat, and until I saw your series on it, I didn't even know it was a remake at all. I queued up your review of The Omen, thinking it'd be the movie I'd seen as a kid, and was confused to see Atticus Finch, but everything was still beat for beat the same, so I thought I imagined the remake! Needless to say, I'm no longer confused.

I'm sure to get some hate for this but: I much prefer the remake. Yes, I saw the original and like it, same with its sequels, but everything here I see it as an improvement, the one exception being the score. Jerry Goldsmith's music is legendary, but I still love what Marco Beltrami did. Yes, it's an unnecessary remake that's just repeating the same things almost bit by bit, directed by the guy who killed the Die Hard franchise, and we should point the finger at them for not being more creative, but sue me, I like the updates, I like the cast, and I come back to this one every once in a while instead of the original. Except for Damien, I don't like him in either version. There were really no better child actors at either time?

Left work on the 666 opening day wearing my Damien Omen II T-shirt, because I couldnt find my The Omen T-shirt, (yes, I am a nerd and LOVE the first three films, books and soundtracks) to go see this, hoping for the best. Left the theater incredibly angry (thought not as angry as when I left The Fog remake) because of all the great potential that was never met. A huge part of its lack of impact, is that the "accidents" are just a showy stunt here; we are never allowed an emotional reaction to the incident. In the balcony scene in the original, a nice dread is built up with the smashing of the fishbowl before Katherine's fall; not only is she going to smash just like the fishbowl, but she's going to wham down on all that glass. And when she does fall, that slow drop where we see her body turn so she is not only going to land hard, but she is also going to land, not on her back, but face first. This adds an awful nasty extra glee of cruelty to the scene that makes it so much worse than the remake version. In the original, we are allowed the emotional impact of seeing Katherine's broken body, the blood drip from her mouth, knowing Damien has probably killed the unborn child that slumbered in Katherine's womb, a character we like, possibly now dead. In the remake, all we get is impact- the impact of Julia Stiles hitting the ground and then an immediate cut to the next scene, the film ready to race off to another stunt. The makers of this abomination (actually the title of the 5th Omen book by the way) never understood the idea of making the audience care about the characters and have sort of a frisson for some of what they go through when accidents or death comes. In the theater, the remake often brought hysterical laughter (especially in the peanut butter sandwich scene). Not something the original's script by David Selzer left any room for. This remake was a botched effort with its CGI (which I thinks further lessens the impact of some deaths, the priest for example) the sleepwalking Liev Schrieber in the lead (is this the Manchurian Candidate?) and the choice of Mia Farrow to turn Mrs Baylock into a sweet woman who just happens to do mean things. No excitent or fear there. I could continue to rant about so many awful missteps in this film, maybe it's only positive being some terrific cinematography. I beg friend "please see the original, not the remake". And always will.

I remember watching this movie in theatres with my mum when it came out. She had seen the original movie, I hadn't and while I probably should have, I was fifteen, so I hadn't seen a lot of horror films by then. I don't remember what her opinion on it was, but I thought it was okay. A few years later, I watched the original and while I will agree that it's a much better film, I feel like it was spoiled for me because I'd seen the remake first.

The kid who played Damien looked nice and creepy, but honestly that's all he had going for him. For my money, Seamus Fitzpatrick didn't have nearly the personality of Harvey Stephens. Fitzpatrick had the huge, creepy eyes, a sort of 1000 yard stare that still seemed to pin you like a bug on a board, but other than that...not so much. Now, the thing about the original Mrs. Baylock (Played by Billie Whitelaw) that I always found so wonderfully effective and never would have removed it for pacing's sake was that moment in which she entered the nursery and looked upon Damien for the first time. This woman is a disciple of Satan. She's being called by Lucifer to serve and protect (with her life, if necessary) Lucifer's only begotten son. It's a moment one can equate with a Christian entering the room where the baby Jesus is hanging out, playing with his toys. The way the camera is waiting for her as she enters the nursery. Her face turned away, eyes averted, seeming to take a pause, a beat, to prepare herself, then sweeping her eyes around...and seeing him (or maybe more accurately, seeing Him). Laying there on the floor is her god, made flesh. That's a big moment, and I didn't see that nearly so well communicated in the 2006 version. Baylock:1976, speaking to Him with that ominously archaic phrasing, and her dark tone..."Have no fear, little one...I am here to protect thee." Damn, that was wonderfully atmospheric. You definitely knew in that moment that she was gonna go down swinging when the final showdown came. She was going to do some damage. Just my thoughts.

The most disappointing aspect is the terrible moments put in (the flash cuts) which undermine the movie. Also liv Schreiber and Julia styles are miscast and crucially too young -it again undermines the plot and how crucial it is for Kathy to have a healthy child. Moore is a competent director but appeared to burn out after a series of remakes of bat21 (behind enemy lines ) flight of the phoenix and the omen. The remake fails on many levels in some rudimentary ways that continues to undermining the characters and story

Hated this remake but the casting of Mia Farrow as the nanny was brilliant. She played it so sweet and gentle - so different from the grim but wonderful Billie Whitelaw - that it gave the movie a fleeting sense of originality. I also thought that Julia Stiles was too young. She was 25 and, obviously, could conceivably be the mother of a 5 year old but her essence was still very college girl in 2006.

I do agree about Mrs Baylock. I wish they would've had Robert Thorn or even Kate figuring out her true nature. Perhaps she finds out Mrs Baylock was the one who killed her actual child and delivered Damien from a Jackal and that's why Mrs Baylock killed Kate because she was about to contact Robert or stop her. I'm also not a fan of the fact Damien clearly knows who he is and what his powers are. The original had it ambiguous as to whether he knows or not. I do enjoy the performances though and appreciate their new age attempts at modernizing it but the scene with Damien playing a video game takes you out of the film. For example, in the original Damien is being loud as he's playing with the pool balls, so Kate wants him gone. In the remake the dialogue is the same but the situation is different. The TV is loud not Damien, so why not just lower the TV? I wonder if The First Omen will have a twist that it's Mrs Baylock's origin story. She could be the Whore of Babylon and we see her go from an innocent God fearing woman to the protector of The Antichrist. Whatever you do DON'T seek out the TV pilot to the TV show DON'T DO IT

I'm not saying this movie was good or bad but typically with remakes, they make them so a new audience can view it, right? An audience that wouldn't go back and watch the original so you release it again. If you look at it like that, recreating the same movie but more modern makes more sense since you're essentially trying to sell them on the same movie but bring more awareness to it. I guess what I'm trying to say is sometimes it might be better to review a remake as it's own thing and not compare it to the original. I'm sure the points you brought up are very valid though! Edit: Wrote this at 11 minutes in and you mentioned something similar in the end.

Like your complaints are just silly. Who cares if its exactly like the original. Even when remakes do things alittle differently they ALL have the same out come. If someone picked between the original and the 2006 they wouldn't know the difference sense they are virtually the same movie.

Because it’s lacking the tone, atmosphere, performances, score and polish of the original. The jumpscares are terrible, Damien isn’t as interesting, the third act is completely missing the strong dread the original…. need I go on? It’s a cheapened version. I also don’t agree that it looks better. It looks flat and boring, whereas the original has a very distinct visual style

A lot of people care if it’s exactly like the original, because why bother if that’s the case? You have cheaper, lazier copy of a really well made movie. It’s lame as shit

I didn't like this one that much either. The original is still top tire. I dont mind if remakes are a lot like the original .The little kid was perfect for the role cus he was cute with an unsettling air. The kid in this one didn't give that off. Great video, good points.
