You made me realize Sinister 2 had good bones, but poor execution. I may watch it a second time.

I still agree with Spoony Noah Antweiler, the Super-8 videos would have been more unsettling without the music and if they'd just been in silence with the sound of the reels running.

I don't rewatch a lot of modern horror. Be it that older films have me in a nostalgia chokehold, or I just don;t find as much rewatchablity in newer films, I find Hush to be so enjoyable I rewatch it every other year or so. Just a gem many have slept on. And I don't know why, besides the obvious home invasion connection, but the ~vibes~ remind me of You're Next.

as a christian girlie, i was so invested. i thought it was terrifying. i went in COMPLETELY blind - i didn’t even know it had religious themes! i got the references IMMEDIATELY, and as the movie went on, the more i thought “this is the perfect christian horror.” as christians, we believe that satan is present on this earth, and the way he operates is not by killing anyone directly, but chipping away at their soul. their sense of self, view of others, loss. it was incredibly bone chilling and heart wrenching to see this kind of view many christians have of the devil, presented in this horrific way.

I don't think Michael is supernatural. At all. He's Patrick Hockstetter in the IT novels and he feels no pain to boot. A nasty case of solipsism and the inability to empathize through emotion or pain can make you appear inhuman but you're just incapable of feeling any of the damage being done. The fact that he's rotting means he's dying of infection. Cory just couldn't handle how close he came to dying when Michael was just too weak to kill anymore. This is the generational trauma Jamie should have mentioned they were going for, because this is community based generational trauma.

The soundtrack was god damn phenomenal! I rarely notice a soundtrack in films nowadays as they're not as memorable as game ones... but the tape bgms and that foreboding dub steppy music burns in my mind.

I maybe the rare person who found the movie in the middle. Not bad and not great. Also I did not like Flanagan blocked people from the deaf community when they criticized Hush for misrepresenting their experiences. See the video of why deaf people doesn't like the movie Hush of Rikki Poynter.

I love Mike Flanagan so much, his storytelling is always so masterful and I love that he implements it through horror. There's so much poetic nuance to The Haunting series, and though I wasn't such a big fan of Midnight Mass's constant monologuing and extremely slow pace, I could see how much passion he put into his magnum opus. He is for me the way Hayao Miyazaki is to Ghibli filmography.

Obviously you either do Hill House as a series of videos, or go all in on one huge video essay. I know neither is really what you usually do, but it’s Hill House. It’s special, and deserves that special treatment.

Movie wasn’t as groundbreaking as people were saying it was, but it was good. Hereditary and Sinister still stand above it by a wide margin as my personal benchmark for the best that the horror genre has to offer.
