Update: Rear glass flips up on the 2023 model. Still not as cool or functional as the old "roll down" window.

Just replaced the rear window regulator on a second gen last night. Flip up sounds great haha. I think part of the decision is a full width window look.

When you get your hands on the 2023 Sequioa, again, would appreciate viewing 0-60 seconds time, 1/4 mile time, braking distance, highway passing acceleration and off roading/Overlanding endeavors. Thanks, Kirk. Maybe, a towing test, too. Preferably, the TRD Pro trim.

I'm ok with this. really not a deal breaker. KISS. It's simpler, just as usable as the old one and an easier build because of the aluminum door.

Nice video. I recently bought a '22 Sequoia TRD Pro as I wanted the old school tech, V8 and bullet proof 6 speed. I plan to keep it for a very long time. I don't care for all the fancy new tech, massive screens, hybrids, turbos, etc. Sure, I'll pay at the pump, but the reliability, simplicity and V8 growl are worth it to me.

I do like V8, simplicity, and cargo space of the 22. So 60% towards the old.

I have 2012 tundra platinum. Not a single repair needed so far. I plan to keep it forever.

Yes. The engine on the 2022 and older is a much better workhorse and will likely have an even more reliable future than the new hybrid / turbo. Just like the Land Cruiser. I foresee this "old" model increasing significantly in value and of course impossible to get brand new. Like the Land Cruiser and likely the future 4Runner in a couple of years.

You’re definitely made a great point to the Ride Height that’s one of the things I enjoy the most about the Sequoia. One surprise is when you press tow haul and accelerate from a stop without a trailer, you notice the 4.30 gears 100%. Lastly for it’s size, turning radius is unmatched. Obviously, Toyota did an amazing job with the 3rd gen, but just as you have the loyal 1st gen group. It’s a few of us that feel that way about the 2nd gen too. I’ll check the new one out, but if the wife isn’t to crazy about all the upgrades I’m keeping the 2nd gen for awhile.

Very glad I bought a 2022 Sequoia, and I could easily have waited for the 2023. The 2023 has too many negatives including third row room and cargo space just to accommodate the battery so that Toyota could say that they're trying to be environmentally friendly. Also, I know my Sequoia will be trouble free because they have been for years. There could be lots of issues with the 2023. Lastly, if it's true that the 2023 has no 4WD auto like the 2022 has then I would never even think about getting the 2023.

I'm in the market for one... I want a 21 or 22 .. they are expensive but it's gonna be worth it. It'll be my life's SUV keeper. ... My goal is 3 cars, a point A to point B, a big SUV for family in the future .. and a sports car like a Porsche.

Love the look of the new 2023 Sequoia, but the fact it only has 88 cf of cargo space and the 2nd and 3rd seats don't lay down flat are deal-killers for me! Looks like the previous generation of Sequoias make better vehicles for off-road overlanding. Great review and thanks for your video!

I specs states it's 87 vs 84 Highlander, what's the point of having Sequoia?

Independent suspension all the way. I need my cargo room. So old sequoia all the way. Less tech to go wrong with it.

That still is still Solid, I'mma keep my 2012 for very long time.

You don't need a "locking center differential" with a part-time transfer case because it's always locked 50/50. The center differential, when unlocked, provides full-time 4WD ability, which can be used in all driving conditions including dry pavement/rain. The 2023 Sequoia is part-time 4WD only.

What you can easily do with the Sequoia: From driver’s seat, roll down the back window, climb to the second row, lift the second row seat up, walk to the third row, place half of the third row down, climb out the back window. Close the window with the key. No door opening needed. When does one need to do this? You park one side very close to a wall and a car happened to park way too close on the other side, and you cannot open the hatch from the inside (1st gen at least) or the hatch is too close to the wall

Heck yeah it’s worth buying an old sequoia I still love that interior, as I have an 07 tundra

I'd take the old with the 5.7 over the new hands down.

This is indeed a bulletproof beast. And a hungry one too. I'd buy this over the new.

I like the new sequoia exterior and interior wise but practicality and reliability wise I’d take the old one. Gas is relatively cheap vs fixing turbos down the road since they cost thousands not hundreds

9:43 Look at those nice big chunky knobs for heating and ventilation controls in the 'old' model. Why on earth did Toyota do away with these in the new Sequoia, replacing them with a row of tiny, identically-colored and shaped push-buttons? You'll find the same mess in the new Tundra too, even on the SR and SR5 trims. An ergonomic disaster that's absolutely baffling.

I’d get both if I had the money

Love my cavernous masculine 2021 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro Super White, employing that legendary tried and true bulletproof naturally aspirated 5.7 liter V-8 engine and reliable Aisin 6 speed automatic transmission powertrain that I only paid $58,693 last February, manufactured last January. Also, appreciate the tow hooks, tailgate power window, more capacity and higher ground clearance. If I ever desire more horsepower coupled with increased torque, I can always affix a supercharger or twin turbo on my 5.7 liter, harvesting 550hp/550lb.ft. of torque or 1500+HP/1200+lb.ft. of torque, respectively.

Would love to see a video on the 2023 Crosstrek spoilers/hype on the wilderness trim or even possible power trains.

Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro(2nd generation), simply the best

Man the new one is just so nice and I’ve never been big into Toyota but I can’t help but want it and I will try to get it if it’s not crazy expensive. Hopefully there is a lot of inventory and it’s not crazy stupid uncharged.

2nd gen pros: bulletproof V8 cargo space & 3rd row space full-time 4WD for on-road handling roll down rear window independent rear suspension for ride comfort 3rd gen pros: fuel economy & range power & torque better infotainment & connectivity 12.3" digital gauge cluster solid rear axle for articulation

I only opened the rear window on 4runner a handful of times to accommodate some cargo. It's a nice feature but not a deal breaker.

TFL showed the rear glass that lifts like a hatch. Sad because the rear slide down window is awesome.

THE NEW SEQUOIA IS FANTASTIC And SO WAS THE OLD ONE

The new one is badass man, haters will hate. The only thing I don't like about it is it doesn't have the rear roll down window which is very important, and that stupid screen that's slapped right in your face in this new one. That being said I'm pretty much a 4Runner guy, I'll stick with my 4runner, and looking forward to the new gen for that lol

The 2nd gen 4WD system is better for on-road driving as the center diff is open. On the 3rd gen you have to get into 2WD when you drive on pavement, which is not as confident as the full-time 4WD of the 2nd gen, which powers all wheels all the time.

Rear window opens, look at redline review of it, also TFL showed it open on the capstone

The road presence is remarkable

I have the 2010 Sequoia. A beautiful and very reliable machine with much more interior space and comfort than the new model. Love my V8.

Old school all the way. The engine and transmission are tried and tested. I just picked up a used 2019 TRD

Love your video supporting the 2nd gen. For off road purposes, the 3rd (and 1st) gen smoke the 2nd gen.

I'll stick with the bullet proof old v-8 and transmission. Who knows how long the new configuration will hold up?

That engine will always be a beast , i dono i am just not liking the concept the new turbo engines in the new tundra and sequioa , as wont get this smooth and refined engines like the v8

Small part of me wants to trade in my 2019 Tundra TRD PRO for a 21-22 sequoia technically same truck. I know I’ll miss the bed of the tundra 😞

Rear locker will be better in most severe off road use compared to a center diff lock.

Only gripe about this outgoing model is the small gas tank, otherwise it’s a great vehicle that I would have purchased. Got a deposit in for the new capstone sequoia.

Even at 13.3mpg, the '22 with 26.4 gallon tank will get just over 350miles per tank.

New one looks great but the third row storage is a joke and no V8….. ugh, I will go get a 2022 GX instead for now until I can find a way to get past the two issues. Otherwise, the new Sequoia looks like a home run.

I'm looking for a highway trip taker.....I have a Sequoia that is rally nice for this EXCPET the fuel economy. I get 14-15 on the highway. Even with the new numbers for the 23 Sequoia being lower than what people were expecting....going from 15 to 22 is huge.....Makes it more of what we are looking for. Now how to afford one.??

How about Flex fuel? It is still present in 2020-2022 models? 3UR-FBE engine marks if I not mistake.

There's no replacement for displacement.

Beautiful exterior on the '23 and great MPG. If towing more than 7400lbs, I guess that's a bonus too. But the demonstrated reliability of the bullet proof engine and transmission with the vastly more practical interior plus the cost savings of the deals you can get on late 2nd gen models makes this an easy decision for me. Folks love Toyota for their reliability and, sometimes, for their simplicity. Until they at least fix the terribly impractical cargo area in the rear and issues folding chairs down for space, it's too large of an exterior for too small of an interior on a very expensive vehicle which will cost a bit more to maintain and not save enough on MPGs to really justify. Maybe if your set on a better looking interior/exterior?

The current sequoia as old as it is I’d still pick it because: A. The old gen is way more spacious than the new gen B. The v8 is bulletproof yet inefficient and the turbo v6 hybrid could be less reliable long term. Gas is relatively cheap vs fixing turbos. And the v8 sounds great C. The power rear window D. Also the navigation is built in and the older infotainment is easier to use with a Home Screen and more physical controls

Power rear window isn't even a big deal, this new one is simpler, saves weight, cost, and does the same thing as the roll down window

If you want an “old school” Sequoia buy it now as they are no longer being built. Many dealers are now asking over MSRP on the remaining ones in inventory.

Assuming you can find one. They’re not easy to find. Curious, is the old Tundra a luxury model?

Expensive repairs forthcoming for that stressed out 3.5 liter twin turbo V-6. Especially, if you're employing the aforementioned with heavy payloads and maximum tow capacities. No thanks

No sliding back window, smaller 3rd row and cargo area. Floor is not flat

If you like driving in a new “antique” it’s great. It’s basically a time capsule. I’ll wait for the new one.

I wish I could have gotten my GX without a sunroof. It's just something I'll never use. The rear glass flipping up is actually preferred to me over the roll down window. I can't remember ever using the roll down window in my 4Runner. I'm still not a fan of the barn door on the GX and wish it had the LX570/LC200 rear door.

But I’d get the old one first

Shame that the outgoing Sequoia never had the interior of the refreshed 2nd gen Tundra. That dashboard could have made the 2nd gen Sequoia a little less ancient 😅 I really like the upcoming model. Standard hybrid is a segment first and could be a game changer if it delivers stellar fuel economy. I even think it's better looking and more impressive than the Lexus LX. However, I do think it's quite disappointing that there still had to be trade-offs between the 2nd and 3rd gen models. I think Toyota chose a solid axle for better offroading capabilities but why aren't tow hooks standard?! Toyota is boasting a segment first sliding 3rd row, but the 2nd row couldn't be slid to provide more legroom for the rearmost passengers. Toyota had 15 years to somehow address these concerns but maybe building cars is just too damn hard 😂

The new Sequoia has a lift up glass, I've seen a few walk around videos where it was shown.

I would definitely buy the new one because it’s much improved model but if I already had the old first or second generation, I’d keep driving it because the V8 Sequoia will last forever.

A stressed out twin turbo V-6, more expensive components to malfunction right after the powertrain warranty period.

@@youarerightboss TFL did a towing test on I70 in CO. The 22 gas Tundra pulled the load with ease (2500 revs) and kept up with traffic. They did the same test with a 2.5 Gen Tundra 5.7 several years ago. The 5.7 and 6 speed auto were struggling terribly. The engine was at full revs in second gear with cars flying by. The Hybrid engine in the Sequoia will tow even better. The electric motors provide a lot of torque and take stress off the engine. High revs wear out engines. In addition the cylinders are more upright in the V6 so there is less ring wear. The base engine in the Silverado (2.7 turbo 4) out tows the 5.7. Even the pushrod 5.3 GM engine pulls better. I’m a Toyota guy, but the 5.7 is way overrated. It’s not totally bulletproof like the 4.0 V6 in the 4Runner either. The 5.7 is somewhat anemic with ok to decent reliability. The Land Cruiser 5.7 has better components and better reliability.

I love both vehicles for what they bring to the table but, that being said, fuel economy is king. I hear it often, people just hate spending at the pump. The new Sequoia is a nicely designed vehicle for sure.

New sequoia and tundra don’t get promised mpg improvement

The new sequoia doesnt have fulltime 4wd. That's why this one has the center diff lock. Huge advantage with the old sequoia. You can drive in 4wd on all types of roads. The new one will bind on concrete like the tundra.

Two things that bother me the most about the new sequoia is a) lack of full time 4wd and b) that ugly front air dam (for all trims except trd pro). If I buy the new sequoia I’d go with limited trim with off-road package instead of TRD pro which doesn’t offer 2nd row bench. Do you think they will remove the air dam if one adds off-road package? Still waiting to see what the ground clearance figures are for limited and trd pro

If you can't afford the petrol, buy a Prius or hitchhike.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia is the best Toyota redesign since the 2007 Tundra, if not the 1993 Supra Toyota decided to make the best vehicle in the class. I wish they always were that focused on excellence, not cutting costs.

I just hate the infotainment screen on the sequoia the tundra one is much better( previous tundra not the new one)

If they left the size of the old seqouia on the new one it wouldve been less negative comments with people. They screwed up the Tiny Tundra now to. Super small

This watered down 3rd generation Sequoia should sell like hotcakes, though. Since the unrefined masses are infatuated with stressed out twin turbos, gadgets, MPG and feminine soccer mom exteriors/cosmetics.

Why do the sequoias always look like the back of the truck is sagging?

It’s gross looking and I have the sibling a 2020 TRD pro tundra same color. Toyota majorly screwed up with when they never redesigned the Sequoia to match the last Gen Tundra.

If you enjoy throwing money away in fuel… sure!

Here's why: V8 engine

You can fit no one in the 3rd row. Panoramic roof is cool but not worth the 75000 plus price tag. For 75000 plus I would by a used 2021 Sequioa platinum get interior upgraded at aftermarket shop. And still have my roll down window. Get the motor supercharged. Don't tow anything and don't go off roading. I need a car that can survive the terrible drivers in USA. Unfortunately I survived 2 t bone accidents in a Sequioa. People stick with safety , reliability over financial ruins of the new vehicles. And paying for a subscription for heated and cool seats and other things is more nonsense. Fight back or forever be suckers

ill give you credit for trying to push reasons to buy the old. im my opinion its not even a close comparison. the new one is light years better than the previous one.

First model year owner always = beta tester. Give it a year.

Honestly sucks that's they went away with the v8.... The old sequoia is the only reliable v8 big suv in the entire market. The only other viechel that competes in my opinion would be the lx 570. I would not invest in such a complicated engine system in the new suv's. Toyota is going away from it's roots... I wont be supporting this change.

Don't buy new until it's proven to last.

The new one looks mean and muscular, completely opposite of the 90s look of the old one. Interior is not even a discussion. It just comes down to how bad are you willing to compromise for the gas guzzlin' V8. The new one all day!
