    Chris, you have to enter the tonnage for each stage, not the total of the unit. Multi-circuit is correct for multiple compressors, multi stage is if you have variable capacity in the same compressor. On that unit the compressors are identical so 50/100%. 3.75 isn't an option so set one to 4 tons and the second to 3.5 tons so the "Total Active Tonnage" says 7.5 tons. You had it set up as 7.5+7.5 and it said the total was 15 tons, that's why the airflow was messed up.

    CHRIS. Haven’t watched to the end yet, but multi-stage is for refrigeration circuits with multiple stages of compression. For instance - two compressors in tandem as on larger Trane Voyagers and Intellipaks. You would use one set of probes for these two stages because you are making measurements at the same ports, just staging compressors on and off. Multi-circuit mode is for systems with multiple discreet refrigerant circuits. Like in a Lennox RTU with 3 compressors sitting side by side, all with their own piping and metering devices. Hope this helps. Also, there used to be a bug in multi-circuit mode where you would select the number of circuits but then you had to select the number again in the System Info page. I believe they have fixed that but I saw you work through that in a previous video.

    Muti stage= 2 stage compressor or tandem compressors. The other option is for multiple compressors with their own circuits that are separated. Those predators have their own condenser coils for each stage. It's the same as Lennox does. The only commonality is the evap is split top to bottom for Y1 and Y2.

    I learned the importance of condenser fans yesterday. The repair people said a wire somehow got broke which powered the fans, so the store I work at apparently came VERY close to loosing almost all the refrigeration capacity for the whole store. Everything almost overheated. I can’t even imagine how expensive repairing that equipment would be since the compressors alone are taller than me. :/

    Chris, thank you so much for the post! I'm not an HVAC tech, I'm a landscaper and a T shirt print operator, but I love to see your troubleshooting process. I definitely agree with your closing words in regards to technology being both a benefit, but also a curse if you're struggling to understand it. I remember a situation where I had a guy apply almost 2x as much fertilizer on a commercial property I used to care for because she didn't quite understand the scale when she was mixing the chemicals. No harm done really, but we both learned something that day. I've been interested in going into the HVACR field for a couple of years, but haven't made any decisions yet, but maybe in the next year or two, I'll get myself put together enough to start the process. Again, thanks for posting!

    My company got called out to do a start up on one of the york units that had never been started after 8 years because of the suite not having power. I came and it was flat on both circuits. Found leaks on both txvs equalizer tubes, the coils, and the low pressure switch on circuit 1. Got york to warranty the coil after all this time. Once we put in the factory charge, the unit wouldn't start and the board was showing all kinds of impossible codes. Replaced board and works like a charm. The location for the service ports is horrible. And the fact that units even come from the factory without liquid service ports seems preposterous. The unit I worked on was a heat pump

    I agree....way to much information to input to get the readings. Much too convoluted for practical everyday use and time consuming. It is nice for start ups and for general use....but not the most user friendly for commercial type equipment. You have to profile each stage, circuit etc. Customers pay for you to be quick and precise.

    The reason that the first circuit doesn’t use the full capacity of the unit is because if the unit was only on the first stage it wouldn’t be running at full rated output. I think you need to select the rated output of only the first stage and for stage 2 then you would select the full unit rated output because it assumes if you are running stage 2 then stage 1 would also be running.

    Chris, it looks like measurequick is acting as if a multi-circuit mode is looking for a VARIABLE SPEED BLOWER. That is why your airflow numbers are wonky when looking at first stage vs looking more in line on the second stage. When I tried this on a VFD controlled blower in a Carrier, it all made sense. Hope that helps!

  • @jasonjohnsonHVAC

    @jasonjohnsonHVAC

    You have to input or import information for each stage. By default the blower is on constant volume. I messed with it this morning and if you put the information for each stage into MQ it'll spit out the correct operating pressure, temp, airflow, electrical etc.

    @@HVACRVIDEOS I am sorry to hear that. We can never know what is going on in people's lives. As for myself, I don't own enough probes to gauge up to both stages at once. The third party world is lucky that I have spent as much as I have on tools, and that restaurant chain is lucky to have you being willing to help them. I only have one restaurant site that has old equipment, and the new chain has ice machines that need replacement. The Scotsman grid comes loose from the evap plate, and that's a sign from God that the machine needs to go to heaven. I'm not a fan of the "fix on failure" philosophy, but it does keep the work coming. I have to choose a camera rig for my channel. Dave is using a head rig. Any suggestions?

    I'm no expert by any means, but that multi stage vs multi circuit thing makes me think of the new heat pump I put in last year. Its a single compressor but "multi speed" where the logic actually runs the compressor and fans at multiple speeds to simulate multiple separate stages and make it more efficient. But I agree they should make the wording more clear on exactly what to use for what equipment

    Do you happen to know why manufacturers don't put ports on all 3 lines? You could get suction superheat, discharge superheat, and liquid subcooling. An extra port wouldn't be too much more cost in manufacturing.

    It not the cost per unit, its cost per 100s of units usually. So even though its cheap they would rather save the extra $$

    Some do. Trane has units with discharge and liquid ports....but they are not prevalent in the industry. It would definitely be nice for TXV equipped RTU's. Fixed orifice not needed as much. You could guesstimate the liquid pressure based on some calculations if known values are available

    Man I get that those bulbs need to be mounted on horizontal lines but couldn't they pretty easily engineer this so that you don't have to take the top off the dam unit to do something as silly and simple as adjust a txv strap? It's crap like that that annoys tf out of me. Maybe there's something I don't know that justifies their reasoning but to me it seems silly.

    @@bobh6728 makes sense, I guess. 8 flashes is compressor 2 lockout, and there was low air flow over the evap, so both circuits seemingly would be experiencing the same fault
