perfect example of how 50 bucks worth of filter can save you a 5k repair. its pretty amazing that the oil was like bud light levels of clear considering the crap in the filter. still, oil does not have to turn black to be bad. a quick acid test might tell you more.

A lot of his work is on restaurants and businesses. Replacement is up to the customer and most of these places don’t want to replace because they don’t have the extra money in the budget to do so

Factory brazed while flowing mud, not nitogen.

My guess on the plugged filter would be, as the unit slowly lost refrigerant it ran for a long time with low pressure, High compression ratio, Partially breaking down the oil and the filter did it’s job

First off, the time lapse music was awesome! And 2nd, you have confirmed my suspicion that the filter dryer was plugged. I keep thinking about the contamination of it...could it have been contaminated refrigerant that another tech may have reused to top it off? Excellent video Chris!

The nitrogen at such small volumes will change quite a bit due to temperature. I do static pressure tests on stainless instrumentation tubing and just rubbing your hand on the tubing will increase the pressure by a couple PSI. The sun beating down on it will definitely do it.

I wish I had someone like you to teach me when I first got into the field. I would probably still be in the service field.

I'm surprised that oil was so clean. Goes to show how important good filters are.

As always.....job well done...only difference i think i would've done was also replace the low pressure switch, due to so many opens and closes. I like your idea of the delay on make timer. You are right about that filter drier.....that is a bit puzzling on why it got plugged. Without taking everything apart and having a lab perform an analysis....its an educated guess as to why.

Back in2005 and agan in 2010 carrier received several containr loads of coils that were poorly capped but were not told by the person tha received them. It caused all sorts of problems all over the world, but mostly down under. Also for you and all that watch yoour great channel, get rid of the plastic caps and you'll solve most of the leaks you get. Plastic expands contracts so much that they become loose and leak, especially in the hotter climates.

Should of seen the oil at yesterdays job, sent the young fellas to pull the coils on a dry cleaning machine that an other company has been servicing but can’t fix the issue, they called me because the super heat was extremely low, I went there, filter dryer was almost frozen, both txv blocked and oil was like black glue, the poor mtz100 was still trying its hardest

I'm a jack of most trades (and master of what I do) but never got into HVACR cause I never wanted to invest in the tools, few thousand just to start lmao. Beside that residential HVAC is a pain in the ass, framing built *around* units, cramped fucking spaces, attics, and units always failing after supply stores close for the weekend lol Keep up the good work!

Get with a good company that has a warehouse of their own with all the supplies you need when you can't get to a supply store/they're closed. Of all those things, the only thing that pisses me off is framing around units (customer built). They don't think about repairs/maintenance when building those f*#$ing things.

Also same thing with the tools, a good company will supply them for you. Then you just slowly buy your own with scraps from each paycheck.

@@maggotthemadman8142 I work only ever for myself. Not fond of being dictated. Your suggestions will help others though, and good advice given. I've seen many old schoolers bring in apprentices and get them the basics for tools to start even. I've tried recruiting youth. Anything heavier than a phone is too much work... I would have killed for $20/hr grey money to move rocks as a teen. Only legit jobs were $5.25 standing like an idiot being yelled at by entitled idiots.

I really enjoy a look at the fieldpiece testing equipment that you use. Seriously considering a complete swap out of what I am currently using in wholesale change. Nice to see it in action. I have tried everything on the market and usually eliminated fieldpiece for some odd reason..... Thanks. As far as the contaminants in your system, I, ONCE found a restriction on LL just before a bend in 3/8" pipe just before the access port. Now there is only (1) way for that whole (Schrader core) to get lodged the right way from the factory.... i know it is weird, but tried to jam a whole core thru any opening and Yup it made its way into the system while piping was apart being ready to braze from factory.... My .02

Carrier had a problem nation wide. I've changed a crap ton of those driers. When they built the units they didn't nitrogen purge when they made the coils.

Ash and oil in that dryer. I have had a hell of a time getting that out of an evaporator before and had to change the screen on a tev.

I'm thinking that a part of the low suction pressure is the traditional orifice header woes that are typical for one of these Carrier units. If that stuff was in the dryer, some of it made it through to the orifices as well.

Also I believe you could have tried to acid test the system to test is their is contamination in the unit because contamination and non condensables and sludge all will create acid in the the refrigerant if I’m not mistaken

That plugged up dryer is very odd, if the compressor is the original and there hadn't been a burnout in a previous compressor then it's very hard to figure it out. But as you said it was the original compressor and the oil being fine inside the compressor makes it even more mind-boggling. I would imagine it bugs the shit out of you not knowing the root cause as it does me, I hate not knowing the root cause of any failure or issue. Great video though, thank you, Chris.

I've replaced plugged up filter dryer on a 3 month old Carrier. Cut it open and it was full of grey copper oxidation scale. Apparently they didn't purge with Nitrogen when building the unit.

Leak sealer can do that

Gotta wonder if the piping had crud in it when it was all welded together initially or on some other servicing?

I see 410a on you measure quick but the cylinder looks like a different color.

can you please share what kind of refrigerant you are using is. Is it replacement for 410A do weighted like so

HAVE YOU HAD PROBES GET OUT OF CAL DURING USE? Zeroing out probes is extremely important but also making sure that they stay zeroed throughout the process. Going from a freezing truck to room temperature, my probes will lose calibration.

Why did you silver solder that last service t on the suction line instead of brazing it?

Tweakers………🙊🙈🙉 Chris put a load on the condenser next time after you weigh the factory charge. The short oriffice tubes have gone full of the same stuff…. Check supply fan motor for RLA. I understand the airflow but I don’t think your done with that refrigerant circuit….. Great work. Stay safe

I know you said you haven’t done a lot of work on this unit. Doesn’t mean that some other yahoo came up there with a set of gauges that had dirty oil in it from another system. Contaminates that compressor with dirt and junk…now you find the mystery…Either that or Friday afternoon hurry up and get it done Factory fub up…from assembly. Overspray on some copper fittings, they then sweat them together and burn the paint inside…don’t know. Reworked unit that didn’t pass QC out the door…

On your last video where you found oil leaks and you said at the condenser side basically looks like a header you added heat to unrestricted those points could have been something like that then let loose and the drier caught it and then plugged it up is that possible let me know your thoughts thanks guys

Nicely done! Do you typically remove the cormax fittings? Due to the leaking issues.

Is this one of those jobs that you would schedule to return in a months time to replace the filter again in case it started to plug up again from whatever caused the first filter to plug up?

If there is one drop a liquid refrigerant in the system the pressure will be the same on a pT chart, no way to do static pressure test

I doubt it was dirty gas if he recovered it and it didn't dirty the vacuum pump. Also, it wouldn't be running since 08 when it was put in with contaminates. I think they had a sudden release of gas from a broken pipe down in the building somewhere and they didn't even bother to change the filter dryer and just did a quick and dirty cheapie job that Chris probably didn't know about. We had companies here try and say they only use us and had some hack with a tank of gas just gas it up from 0 pressure and had contaminates destroy the system a month later.

May I ask what samsung tablet you using for this video?

JUST OUT OF CURIOSITY.. HOW DO YOU DISPOSE OF THE OLD OIL? Because clearly it has a little bit of refrigerant in it. I’ve been trying to figure how to properly dispose of oil whenever I do certain jobs as well. Any feedback would be helpful thanks !

Polyoester (POE) is very viscous and that brings up a good point, it attracts water out of the air which is why it has to be pumped in with the gas already in the system so that air doesnt contact the oil at any time or just momentary contact with the outside air will contaminate it with water, so that oil he poured in the bucket will never be used in a compressor again even though it looked okay. If it were burnt oil youd see something other than clear so that was shocking, everybody was expecting dirty oil.

Plugged drier? more like spontaneous metering device.

all your units should have time delays ,with your temperatures.

Yup, a DoM or even a DoB timer should be standard orm equipment, but- hey... this is Carrier. They have amazing engineers working there to design failures.
