In this episode, we look at the efficiency (MPG) out of our Mercury 300 V8 on our 25' Center Console Fishing Boat. Join us as we take a cruise in Miami, FL and watch the range of numbers. We had about 130 gallons of fuel (about 800 pounds) in the boat for this test. Be sure to subscribe if you want to see more test like this one with less and more weight to give you real world numbers.

    At each speed increment. FREEZE the throttle movement for at least 30 seconds. That will let the lean burn program kick in for that position. Saving 20-24%. You ever let that happen at any of the speed measurements. Trimming a fixed throttle setting? Then freeze that once proper trim. So motor recalibrates.

    Excellent information. Glad to see you mentioned the various factors in the beginning to weed out a lot of questions. This might make a good series on the different conditions on the water as to how well the boat performs. Keep it up

    Good video. I live in PNW and got a new boat in December. It's a 22 foot welded aluminum with hard top and extended transom. I put a 200 HP Honda, V6 on it. The motor dealer was great in helping me get it propped. Initially had a 15" on it and it would redline over 6K RPM. We put a 17" on and it tops out now at 5,800 RPM with 100 gallons of fuel and three 200 pound dudes with fishing and safety gear aboard. Top speed is 40 knots or 46 mph. Like you I will rarely run it up there for excessive fuel use and our usual sloppy water. Although I've heard it's good for them to do it for a couple minutes every now and then.

    Incredible! Merc's have come a long way. Rething my Yamaha loyalty. Have twin 2019 150HP Yam's w/ three blade props on 244 Center Console Key West. In comparison: 31 MPH at 3900 RPM's burning just under 2GPH with a WOT 5100 RPM 41mph. Understand, not fair. Saw performance of twin 2020 200 HP Merc's on a 27 Contender getting what your 300 HP got. Keep us posted on long term performance and reliability. Thanks for posting.

    Op does not let the computer tune the motor at each fixed speed to test mpg. The 300 will settle in maximizing timing, leaning, and other factors once the speed is set and fixed over time. Way increasing mpg. He never lets enough time for this feature to dial in fully.

    I’ve been looking at boats online and looking up the gph, with a boat I really don’t like looking at mpg (sea conditions change and I want to know my costs per hour). With all of that said your numbers look fantastic 12.67 gph, and most boats I’ve looked at are around 20 gph for the same mph.

  • @342boss

    @342boss

    I use a different logic to look at cost per hour. The more I use the boat, the less my hourly cost is for fun. Storage, maintenance, etc. all need to be paid anyway. If I don't use the boat, those costs are higher per hour:)

    Again you’re comparing your flat bottom Jon boat to a boat with deadrise. Jon boats are for lakes and flat water. Take your Jon boat offshore in 3 foot waves while cruising at 30+ mph and let me know how it goes. Rivers and lakes aren’t the same as the ocean.
