only a kick, snare and a hihat and so much variation... this shit is impressive
Glad to see a metal drummer that really appreciates the art form of drumming. This guy is good! Zach hill (not REALLY a metal drummer exactly) is another example. I can appreciate a musician of any genre that does what they love to do. Ecpecially when they can groove your face off!
What I've always loved about this video is that you can feel the improv - Karel has has a general idea of the groove he's going for, but it's all dynamic. Beautiful.
I've watched this video 420 times.

Jon Karel you are one of the maddest drummers alive dude. I only program drums, so I'd never be able to do half the stuff you do in this video alone, but it's still been inspiring my drum programming throughout the years.

Hey man what happened between u and #12 if u don't mind me asking? Why werent u on Wild Gods?
i've had a conversation with jon after one of his shows, he's extremely chill. totally nice guy. and very resourceful when it comes to drumming. not to mention one of the most unique drummers today.
I have come to this video for every drummer I play with, to point out how good it is. None of them know who he is or who The #12 were. R.I.P.
I have seen this video like twenty tines and still amaze me. I just wanna see more jon karel videos doing drum stuff and teaching things, that talent is just unnatural
Absolutely brilliant. My old drum teacher used to do that thing where he'd put a hi-hat on the snare and play drum 'n' bass beats with it. Always sounded awesome, and Jon Karel really explores every sound you can possibly make with something. Amazing drummer.
One thing that's very useful is being fucking bad ass.
I have never seen so much skill be but into a three-piece set
All i learned is that i suck at drumming. Thank you John Karel! :D
Wow, I can't believe it. I totally was buds and in the school band with Jon in 7th grade and I looked up to him then as a drummer, but wow, I haven't seen him since then and. Just wow.
Unbelievably good drummer. Bummed he didn't come back with them.
The sawtooth grin. One of my favorite drummers
always come back to this video.
I'm wondering why I never heard of this guy, he's awesome!! Five Stars!
I never realized this guy was actually a really good drummer.. don't know how I stumbled across this vid. my cousin showed me some music by the number 12 looks like you a while ago and I could not stand it .. still can't get into the band.. but I have a new respect for john karel.
Fuckin fire I want more of this man in my life Jon plz come back to music!
Favorite drummer favorite band (#12)
only he could make a snare, bass and hi-hat so amazing. Genius...
What a friggin badass
What an unorthodox approach! This is great!
I love it when he puts the top of the hi-hat on the snare and strikes it.
on top of his tremendous talent, I got a chance to talk a bit with him in portland, and he's the coolest guy in the world. such a badass.
A revolutionary of his time.
This guy can play fucking everything. I'm astonished.
might be the sickest drummer ever!!!!
I LOVE THE BEAT! 1:23 AND ON
My favorite drummer... for obvious reasons
I'm not sure this world is real anymore. This is too awesome to be true. Please come to Sweden sometime soon?
I also love Jon Karel. HEAR THAT JON? HERE:
He just covered for their drummer when they did Earth Tour. Alas, he was a great contribution
I think he used to play snare or tenors in his high school marching band, looking at his technique and use of rimshots.
Jon Karel, ftw
It's an Axis drive shaft haha! cobra with axis drive shaft is super cool combo imo.
whoa. i didnt know jon was in HtB too... cool
one of the best drummers period what type of double bass peddle is that? That's not the iron cobra is it?
0:37, okay thats manageable 0:39, O.O SWEET JESUS!
I”ve watched this video 10 years ago 420 times))))))
That was sick,
Amazing drummer. I wish I could take drum lessons from him, heh
Dude you are 100% right his hair and beard are identical.
He "strikes" the shit out of it.
what an astute observation
'tis an iron cobra, yes. and a Tama 8x14 Starclassic G-Maple snare with an Evans Power Center Reverse Dot batter and Hazy 300 reso, 40 strand snares. I believe he recently made the switch to Aquarian, but I'm not positive. This month's Modern Drummer has an article about him and all of his gear.
the best
genius!
I can't even... words don't... HOLY SHIT. i guess that says it.
this guy owns holly shit
I used to do the foot swivel thing on double bass, but i thought it looked too silly, so i stopped. but that solo was awesome.
what kind of snare is this? it looks like two snares stapled upon eachother :)
@Kupo365 he appeals to young crowds doing flashy, simple routines.someone showed me a blink 182 song with gravity blasts and i could barely even hear them.
Holy shit!
The #12 looks like you is mathcore and if you listen to a lot of mathcore you will notice some jazz sounding stuff in there. Jazz is a big influence for mathcore.
@keyseric The Garden's All Nighters by The Number Twelve Looks Like You
Holy shit, this guy can play the drums O_o
Check out videos on the "swivel technique"
kid's got rhythm.
Back again, and just now realizing he is playing the snare like it's 4, 5, 6?? seperate drums haha.
I ought to get a drum set like that because I'm cheap
@aidengabrielx you can! youtubeconverter!;) you can download de audioline from every youtubevideo.
this guy is fucking good 500 stars
Whoa O.o
fucking amazing
Beating the fucking cymbal into the snare drum?!! That is awesome.
fucking sick wit it!
one place to start that he was telling me at a lesson was to first get a light, heel up, feathering going with the foot you are working on for the swivel...from there you move the motion into the swivel...start slower...use a metronome. Hope this helps you a little bit at least!
on his left hand is he wearing a watch or a pulse meter?
wish i could download the audio!
@KidASquared with tom on drums or guitar lol?
@BerkLeeDrm How about Mike Smith? Or Mik(key) Dee?
Does anyone know what songs these are in, if they're in a song that is (specifically the part with the cymbal on the snare) These don't sound like anything from the number 12 (besides that bit from the garden's all nighters), which leads me to believe they're a horse the band song.

will ryan there's something along the lines at 2:25 sleeping with the fishes see...
@NotSpiffums it's the same thing to play both.
Looks like a variation of Buddy Rich's "push pull" technique. Search it on youtube, there are plenty of tutorials. Jojo Mayer does it REALLY well and I think he has a video explaining it on youtube too. It's fucking hard though, so don't expect to get it any time soon lol.
And a sweet beard too!
"One thing very useful is... Being soo fucking goood as meee lookk!!!!"
You're really good! p.s. You look a lot like mexican actor Diego Luna.
hows he blasting like that at 1:32
why did he stop playing with NXII
Holy shit....
He should do a collaboration with Aphex Twin. That'd be tight.
subbed
why aren't there any videos of chris conger?
loud version of Subdivisions by rush at beginning!
Hah this dude was definitely in a drum line with that little butt of the stick trick.
Isn't he in in HORSE the Band now?
Holy shit...
which connecting rod is this?
Isn't he technique he explains at 00:37 the same George Kolias uses ?
0:00-4:19 was the best part i jizzed my pants
@Mega420high it's the push/pull method with his thumb.... shit hahaha
wow isane
its the real deal my friend :p thats jon karel for you
Best shit ever.
my boy took lessons from him
much reminds me of sepultura
i did a drum cover of sleeping with the fishes, see? so for everyone who loves #12 check it out!
dude dave grohls face drifts down and to the right. jon looks like a human. and can actually play his instrument.
@SpyanLord I'm pretty sure Josh doesn't take anything seriously, he's also incredibly drunk at 98% of their shows.
