The Night Tom Jones wanted to punch PJ Proby.
This is a clip from a 1990 interview I did with Tom. PJ Proby, whom I had previously interviewed, claimed that Tom stole his act after Proby was banned from performing on stage as a result of splitting his trousers during performances! Tom took his place on the tour. Here he tells me about calling Proby out for a fistfight! I sure don't think Sir Tom stole Proby's act. If he stole anyone's act, Sir Tom idolized Elvis (plus Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard, but they were not anyone to copy, sitting at the piano). Sir Tom didn't (and probably doesn't still today-ha) take any sh*t. The entertainment business is not all glitz and glamour. Thanks for posting!
To be fair I had always thought Tom to be something of a 'one-trick pony'....since he was blessed and cursed with this powerhouse of a voice which he appeared compelled to use. However as the years passed I was totally taken with his version of Dylan's 'What Good am I ?'.....At last he reigned in the power and gave an emotive rendition. Age mellows I guess. That said for me PJProby is in a league of his own. I doubt many have been interested enough to dip into his back catalogue since his demise. He has produced some amazing work...lost to posterity. I regard him as a true 'artist' with all the creative genius that that involves. Difficult, mad, bizarre beyond belief at times..........as Van Morrison sang : "Whatever Happened to P.J.Proby....?" As a leading Pop Paper back in the 60's lamented...."He Could have Ruled the Pop World you know !"
Im a singer and was inspired as a nipper of 6 or 7 by both singers and have been inspired by many other great male voices back to Caruso times ive seen pj many times i still enjoy seeing him on stage , i listen to tom now i think toms instrument has matured extremely well and he's looked after it well a great singer , im still a fan of pjs recordings and really love them but not so much after 1970s
I remember Tom Jones being referred to as the poor mans P. J Proby and that is what he will always be to me.
Good interview, thanks. Both are obviously great singers, in their own way. Personally, I rate 'I apologise' the greatest vocal performance of all time. Listen carefully & you'll hear PJ pours his whole heart & soul into it. Tom tends to sing more consistently well, PJ perhaps more unpredictably.
PJ Proby was brilliant !!!
As someone that grew up in that era i can tell you that P.J. P roby was a far superior singer that was back stabbed by Tom Jones and the BBC.
Alcohol consumption wreaks havoc.
Very Sad to hear this. PJ Proby has & still is my favorite Ballad singer ,but ,on saying that I like some of Toms Ballads too ,my favorite is "once there was a Time" . Both excellent singers who didn`t need to go down this
Think you all wrong.Tom Jones is one of the best singers Ever. He's a very nice man too.
❤️🙏😎🎤🍾 from your loving pharmacist Christine
P J Proby is and was 1000 times better than Tom Jones! I wish PJ had thumped Jones!
P.J. was a much better singer than Tom Jones was. Tom should praise P.J. and NOT criticise him. Great to see P.J. & Tom both still going strong even now in 2021.
WHO the hell is PJ Proby? 🤔
Interesting interview-I can see Tom having a fistfight with Proby and most likely, coming out the winner!
In my opinion Proby is a far better singer than Jones, He certainly did a better version of 'Delilah', 'I'm Coming Home' and 'With These Hands' and if he had called Proby out for a fight, Proby would have put him on his ass! , just my opinion lol
Tom Jones is great, PJ is generic version
