The “New” Toyota LC79 is Overpriced.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

If you've seen any of my LandCruiser Reviews, you'd know I'm pretty harsh on them... How will the most basic LC79 fair in this review?
So what do I think of the LandCruiser 70 Series? The LC79 we have on test here has been on sale for almost 4 decades in its current form... an underpowered turbo V8, expensive to buy, and absolutely bare-bones, no frills interior. So what is to like? Well, it turns out a lot! Let's talk about why everyone and their dog has a Toyota LandCruiser!

Australian miner here brother. We use the 79 series Utes underground as well for general transport, the Fitters have decked out service Utes, Charge crew use 79s with lockable boxes and the Shift boss has one with a stereo system that you can hear 2 levels away. There is nothing else out there that can drive underground as a brand new vehicle and still be going 300,000 clicks later.

We have 12 of them. They are as tough as, parts & servicing are reasonable, after market parts are widely available . Just needs another cog for the manual or a 7 spd auto. The V8 is underdone, can be thirsty, but is tractable & reliable . Our oldest variant is a 2010 model with 700k on the clock, our youngest is a 2022 model with 45k now covered . Expensive? Yes . But resale is still rocksolid . Nothing else around that's anywhere close to it .

@@macauleyhaywood8643 they generally aren't too bad. We try & do as much work on them as we can . As we are pretty isolated, we carry as many spare parts as we can. Things like spare tyres, belts , radiators , a couple of diffs , gearboxes , some electrical stuff , oils, coolent , grease etc. If you go for a vehicle with high km, make sure it's got a full service history, take it for a run, check that it isn't using coolant or oil as that's a sign of a possible head gasket gone, check that the gears go in & out properly, the clutch if it's a manual. Auto, check kick up/ down, no clunks etc . Even worth getting a mechanics report on it as well. But otherwise you should be good .

I've been in Australia 17 years now and having grown up in South Europe I still only buy small Euro hatchbacks. And yeah, Alfa Romeos. Only recently I'm slowly starting to understand the traditional Australian fixation with Toyota, maybe I'm even starting to feel a little craving for a landcruiser. You've got to understand one thing about LandCruisers. When you first get in one, you'll be shocked. The door handles are a bit spongy. So are the locks. The interior panel fit is terrible, the switch gear feels "so so", the gearbox is clunky with a huge throw, the clutch, the brake and the throttle feel like they're connected to the components that they control with rubber bands. They have terrible audio systems, the seats aren't the best, they're noisy and they drive like a truck. They don't handle at all well. They don't track, they don't stop and power isn't one of their strengths, either. And the ride is harsh. And there is always a rattle, a squeak, or both. And they are terrible in the city. And they're thirsty. And 25 years later, when it's got 550,000 km on the odometer, it will be exactly the same as the day that you bought it. The door handles, the locks, the plastics, the switches, the brake, the clutch, the gearbox, the engine, the ride... will all be exactly the same. And that's why people buy them. They're a good option for towing your Alfa back to the mechanic's, too. .

Land Cruiser 70 series is one of the greatest creations in the world of vehicles. Reliability, durability, simplicity, easy to maintain and timeless design, which are not found in today's vehicles, are more important than electronic devices and features. Its V8 engine and manual gearbox make this vehicle even more lovable. And the exhaust makes some of the best music I've ever heard. People who know the value of LC 70 series know that they can go anywhere without any problem.

probably not even close to the most reliable, the old engines were bulletproof, but the new one has all the new environment crap that comes with diesels, like DPF, and you need clean diesel, the old ones could run on really crap diesel, which is why they are popular in Africa, as there is a lot of poor quality fuel over there, especially outside of big towns and cities.

@@Pyjamarama11 i wouldn't call it a con job exactly, there are a number of reasons why it's such a trusted brand: despite my comments, they are very reliable cars, they are just not as reliable as they used to be. they are still among the most reliable brands, again, cars these days are just not as reliable as they were 20 - 30 years ago for a number of reasons; such as vastly increased amounts of electronics in vehicles, stricter emissions regulations requiring performance and reliability hampering modifications and outsourcing manufacturing to developing countries to cut costs. if i had to go out and buy a new car, i would still buy a Toyota, Lexus (yeah i know it's just luxury Toyota), Mazda, maybe a Hyundai or a KIA, but those have had some issues with their engines and recalls in recent years and I would have to do some more research. Ssangyong is an interesting option, the only thing that worries me is that they are such a new (to my country - they have been around for something like 50 years in Korea) brand, parts availability is not so good, so if anything did break or need fixing (which is not to say they are unreliable, cars break all the time and it's not always the cars fault, can be bad roads, bad luck etc) i would probably have to wait for parts to be shipped from Korea. ideally, buy an old, tried and true Toyota / Lexus for reliability, the late 80s, early 90s and even some 2000s were peak years for build quality and reliability, and the best part is that they are usually quite cheap compared to newer cars.

The GXL also adds completely superfluous arm rests. I can just make myself comfortable as a front seat passenger or driver in the standard-cosy-Model 70 cab i.e., one with manual windows. The substitution of arm rests for door handles reduces the effective internal width of the passenger compartment, increases the possibility of bruised arms in rough conditions and … in the event of a side impact, will bring the vehicle occupants closer to that impact! When you install electric windows in a ‘working cab’ they should be operated by flush mount switches fitted to the door cards.

You buy a LandCruiser for 10 years minimum....and then at the end of that ownership period you get to sell it for close to what you paid for it 😂 regardless of the high mileage. When you consider the true annual cost per year minus the future resale, overall you are in a FAR better financial position then you would be buying something like a Ranger....

Had one of those as a company car when I was a drill and blast technician for a huge open cut mine... Absolutely loved that thing, I used it in the harshest possible environment every single day and it was everything you could ever need and then some. That said, the V8 was insanely thirsty and I'm not sure if, all things considered, $100k+ price is worth it. If it were my money, I'd have trouble justifying it. But then again, there's really nothing else on the market that's in the same league and that probably makes the decision for me.

Yip. From a biz perspective the buy price and chucking fuel in it is far cheaper than more regular repair and replacement costs that come with alternatives. Also the capability for heavy load moving in adverse conditions is unsurpassed or perhaps unmatched. These will work overloaded day in day out without complaint. Small utes like ranger are tapped out a max load when say hill starting. A work Ute must start stop and in my neck of the woods hill start all the time.

@@dustyfarmer Well, to be fair to the Cruiser, I did leave it running with the air conditioning on pretty much all day, it usually had a tray full of bollards/drill bits/various explosives etc, often towed around two axle lighting towers and went up and down 10%+ gradient ramps all day long... It was also in 4WD 90% of the time, as per site regs in the pit. But if memory serves, it had a 130 litre tank and I'd go through most of it in a 12-14hr day.

@@johngreydanus2033 And the ultimate irony is, most of it is useless... or worse. Okay the hazardous goods wiring, bomb boxes, various lights and fire extinguishers were necessary for my particular job. But the ROPS cage over the cab would have been totally useless if I was in the way of a Cat 793 and there's actually a video of one running over a Landcruiser on youtube, which was a done as a safety demo at that very site i was at... look up Cat 793 runs over ute, it's out there. what's more shocking though, is that none of that stuff had actually been crashed tested, which Toyota had expressed many times, saying the vehicles weren't roadworthy in some company specs. They had long been suggesting that all the external bracing, which they did not supply for the fleets, would make the vast majority of accidents the vehicles tended to be in far less safe for the occupants of the cab, transmitting the force to the passengers and there was plenty of examples of crashed utes that looked in good shape with dead occupants to back up the hypothesis. Well lo and behold, once testing was actually carried out, the evidence was clear that on highway vehicles and ROPS cabs are a deadly combination and an expensive waste of fuel to boot. The cab will stay in tact, but you'll be internally made into soup. So much good science goes into making dangerous jobs safe, but when palms get greased, it's easy for unnecessary and even dangerous equipment and procedures to end up killing people before anyone notices the obvious
