The New RenaultSport Megane 280 Cup - Can Four Wheel Steer Make Up For Two Wheel Drive?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The #Renaultsport #Megane is a legendary #HotHatch and a darling of motor journalists and track day enthusiasts alike. However there are big changes with the third generation car, including the move to a five door bodyshell, with a new 1.8L turbocharged engine and a clever four wheel steering system.
But can this car's clever dampers make up for the lack of four wheel drive, when some of its key German rivals have gone down that path - or will Renaultsport be able to capture some of the magic that was sprinkled on the Alpine A110?

Couldn't help it and bought a used one owner 24K miles 280 Cup! Probably on an extended mid life crisis! The fact that this could be the last of the RS Megane's, I thought I would enjoy it's swansong and with all the crud going on with net zero, might as well enjoy now before it's all over...Car is excellent, great control, excellent performance, handling that is just stellar, yes the ride is firm but no more than any typical hot hatch and more than liveable for daily use..Ultimatly great fun with a more refined cabin oh and you do not see many of these on the road! Great content as I have been binge watching!

Got a 2022 facelifted in sirius yellow, and with 300 HP. I love it. For real. Jumped out off a Suzuki Swift sport, and although the swift is great fun, the RS is better.. quite a lot better. Faster direction, ,more HP, better noise, and way better inside. Was one of those "now or never" moments as I did read somewhere that RS is becoming Alpne again, and will focus in e-cars. Anyway. the Megane RS is a nice looking fast cool car. And.. forgot to say: Great video, as usual, James :)

About the engine, I read in some french magazines that they could not use it in a new platform (or it would notre have been a good idea) because it would be hard to pass the new regulations, it could not handle a lot more power without any reliability issue and it was quite a old iron engine which isn't good for weight, especially into the Alpine. This was what engineers of the Alpine project said ans the were very happy ans surprised by the fact that they had the opportunity to create an all new engine. Btw, very good review

  • @TassieLorenzo

    @TassieLorenzo

    4 жыл бұрын

The new 1.8L engine is a Nissan engine that has been around for a little while (about 8 years). It's certainly a **lot** more modern than the old RS' Renault F4R cast iron engine that dates from 1982, albeit the F4R did get some updates like twin-scroll turbo and variable timing along the way. But the F4R turbo has no balance shafts so it's a bit coarse at idle, it has no integrated exhaust manifold in the head but rather a separate log manifold, it has no direct injection -- it's missing a lot of the things you would ideally want on a modern turbo engine. The F4R is certainly a fun and characterful engine, but it was a bit old-fashioned, hence why Renault had to replace it with the more modern Nissan engine. AFAIK they went with the 1.8 turbo because there was no 2.0 turbo available. :( (Indeed the whole Mk4 Megane has gone onto the Nissan Pulsar chassis platform unlike the Renault platform of the Mk3 Megane, so it's a matched set of Nissan platform and Nissan engine... albeit I believe the manual is a Renault designed gearbox, with the dual clutch being a Getrag box)

@@Matt463634 Good point! I don't like direct injection. I was more making the statement that engines with direct injection usually make more power. There are some engines with dual injection now which is better to avoid carbon build-up, but you still have to deal with high pressure injectors and high pressure fuel pumps and stuff potentially going wrong. 😟 I prefer good old port injected & naturally aspirated myself! It's more keep-it-simple-stupid with less to go wrong. 🙂

In race you have to be very careful when taking tight corners you very easily find yourself sideways lol which is fun. And also that cabin is very well insulated so you cannot hear that exhaust however I've been told by freinds my car is actually pretty loud on the outside and from their cabin. Love this I had never seen one of these in real life until I got my own. And they comment on how nice it is inside compared to what they thought from a Renault. Great daily, great fun and it's interesting.

Brilliant video thanks, was really looking forward to you doing the new Mégane as I think Renault have made a really good looking car and obviously like you stated they seem to be on a roll at the moment. I always like their french blue or yellow paint but I agree the red really suits it . Though I think it would look really mean in black or even a lime/bright green. Thought the exhaust would sound a bit meatier but there's always the more expensive option from the Renault Motorsport or high end aftermarket. A really nice alternative to the usual audi rs BMW 1series msport or the absolutely everywhere golf R . Also is that Shotley and possibly Maningtree you where taking the car or looks even like Kelvedon area?👍👍👍

It does sound nice but is the cabin sound not synthesised though? Many reviews highlight that the Megane RS and the 208 French cars have fake engine notes pumped into the cabin. I know my 206 does, and once it dawned on me the whole thing sounded rather silly and pointlessly loud inside (it's quiet outside).

  • @meg2ist

All manufacturers do this nowadays with cars. German cars have a vibrating device at the base of the windscreen which introduces fake noise into the cabin based on engine revs. In VW world is known as "soundaktor". BMW use the car speakers to introduce fake noise into the cabin. Ford have a speaker in the exhaust muflers to simulate noise and pops/bangs.

I have no experience with the 4 wheel steering system on Renaults, but I have HICAS on my daily, and that feeling of the rear-end getting a bit loose could be (if they behave in a same-ish way) the rear wheel steering catching up with the front. You get that a lot with HICAS while exiting a roundabout or making sharp turns, where it feels like you're losing traction in the rear, but it's actually the 4WS doing its thing. It's a bit disconcerting in the beginning , and probably the main reason why people do get rid of HICAS. I'll probably end up getting rid of it myself, but it's mainly because it's cheaper than repairing it if it starts misbehaving. But I digress. Cool car, nice video as always. :)

Hi J. I had a 306gti6. I understand that Peugeot invented the passive rear end steer. I seem to recall that they licensed the tech to Honda when they brought out the Prelude in the late eighties. My pug was like a go cart. A little underpowered but handled very well. I could get the thing airborne in tight streets and get it to lift and turn. Quite the thrill for the girl in passenger seat at time, but point being confidence inspiring.. Oh, so I mention Pug, but really Peugeot , Citroen and Renault often have parts from the same factories. Sort of a socialist thing.

@Johan Sahlin Hi John, two excerpts for you, just for interest. First from Drive.com.au article. Peugeot with mojo For those who lament the global homogenisation of cars, it's good to know that every now and then, manufacturers manage to come up with a model that neatly captures the original spirit of the marque. Citroen stopped making eccentric yet exquisite cars like the DS years ago to pursue the mass market. But it's nice to see cars such as the C3 Pluriel rolling off its production lines again. Jaguar, too, was in danger of losing its soul with the switch to Ford stewardship, but the latest XJ6 is closer to the original than any previous interpretation, and the vehicle is better for it. Peugeot's reputation as a maker of tough, original cars took a bit of a hammering in the 1980s with the entirely forgettable 405. But it managed to claw back some credibility with its 306 of the 1990s. Not all 306s were created equal, and the bread-and-butter versions were still seen as a bit lacking in the verve department. It was a shame, because there was nothing intrinsically wrong with the basic 306 platform or packaging. But it took a model called the 306 GTi6 to bring the exuberance to the surface. In fact, the GTi6 version of the 306 was the closest Peugeot had got to a spiritual successor to the tiny but mighty 205GTi of the '80s - and that's quite a compliment. Related Content Seat Ibiza Cupra Sport Alfa Romeo GTV Coupe Holden Astra SRi The GTi6 picked up the 205 GTi's lust for life. In the process, since the basic platform of the later car was better, it presented buyers with a very balanced, sensible car that was also an absolute hoot to drive. Peugeot started with the three-door 306 bodyshell (a five-door version would have been even better) threw away the single-overhead-camshaft, two-valve 1.8-litre engine and crammed the engine bay with a DOHC, four-valve, 2.0-litre with a stirring 124 kW of power. Torque was also a handy 196 Nm, which meant the car could be doodled around without complaint, or thrashed mercilessly through every gear. Your choice. A six-speed manual transmission was the only one available and suited the car perfectly. To make the chassis match the driveline, Peugeot stiffened up the already good underpinnings of the 306 with firmer, slightly lower springs and sat the car on fat rubber and alloy wheels. The 306 was widely regarded at that time as the best handling front-drive hatch sensible money could buy, and the improvements wrought by the GTi6 treatment make it a truly tactile and entertaining drive. Even today, you will be impressed by the steering accuracy, the balance between ride and handling and the sheer entertainment value contained within the little three-door. Inside are sportier front seats, a clear, logical dashboard and a much more rational seating position than you were ever going to get in the next small Peugeot to hit showrooms, the 206. Build quality was nothing to write home about, so watch out these days for warped plastics and tatty cloth, not to mention the odd squeak and rattle. Released in 1997, the GTi6 picked up all the upgrades from the midlife 306 facelift, so it boasts a better level of safety as standard, including dual front airbags, seatbelt pretensioners and anti-lock brakes. Cars built after August 1999 also have side-front airbags. The GTi6's aspirations were clear from its body kit, its attractive alloy wheels and the fact that the basic 306 package was quite sporty to begin with. These days, it stands as a high point in the development of the 306 and a superior piece of equipment to later efforts by Peugeot. And it also represents the true essence of the hot hatch as told by Peugeot. Need to know: Cars like these with a younger target market tend to get crashed - just ask an insurance company. Check very closely for crash repairs. Drive shafts and their joints can wear. Drive in slow, tight circles, listening for clunks that suggest worn components. Smoky engines or those full of thick, black oil are probably on the way out. Check for clutch slip by driving up a steep hill at about 80 km/h in third gear. If the engine sounds like it's outrunning the car, the clutch is probably done for.

@Johan Sahlin Second from forum with enthusiast/ mechanics response to wanna be purchaser re: the suspension description. "the mounts for the rear suspension assembly are rubber and kinda twist when cornering. each mount looks like two blocks of rubber ontop of each other with a rubber web down the sides too allow movement and hold together. the two blocks slide over each other like when you rub youre hands together sorta thing. its all one peice.very simple but bloody effective. the only down side that has caught me off guard when i first pushed it hard round a corner is that when you back off suddenly it felt like it gets side ways and wants too come round. because the suspension assembly doesnt have load on it anymore and moves in the opposite direction like the car is going in a straight line again. you just dont back off or back off slower. one time i came round a slightly straighter than 90 degree left corner which was 2 lanes,me moving quickly( 70ish ). half way through the corner ,because it off cambers quickly between the 2 lanes, it felt like it was going to come around so i backed off suddenly and corrected which caused it too actually get sideways. fish tailing continued over both lanes for 50 meters easy. oooooooopppppppppssssssssss!!!!! scared the absolute crap outa me but would have looked bloody awsome too see a front wheel drive do that..... still i would not get rid of the passive steering for anything. since i learnt how to use to my advantage i had heaps of fun out cornering people on outside lanes." Enjoy

Cool car.. Unfortunately the Dutch government does not like us buying these type of fun cars anymore because they tax the hell out of them (CO2 emissions tax).. On this Renault Megane RS the extra (BPM CO2) tax is +/- 23.000 euro, that's added to the standard 21% VAT, so total taxrate is +/- 100%, basically doubling the price of this car.. So the base price goes all the way up to at least 50.000 euro (or +/- 43.000 GBP).. Which is just to much for a Renault Megane RS and makes me really sad as a carlover..

Test drove the new trophy 300 and i did not like it, felt to grown up plus the amount of issue's the new mk4 megane sport has had with the fuel gauge is unbelievable, renault said just needed a software update.... nope in most cases did not work and some needed new fuel tanks, and then there was the issue with the trophy R 300 where you went round a bend to quick and the fuel would read empty and the car would cut out!!. So i will be keeping my 275 trophy which i think is the best looking
